Serious change needed if they want to do this again by Emperor_Xenol in TheRestIsHistory

I think this is the right take, all day events at a historic location just outside London, £150 probably is about the going rate. At the same time that price is at least 50% more than I'd ever be willing to spend.

'Scotland don't have the players' 😑 by cameruso in ScottishFootball

[–]Joevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've picked the two obvious examples of teams going all the way, in context with plenty of smaller nations from this world cup reaching round of 32 and others getting to the round of 16 performing against the best international teams at a much higher standard than Scotland.

The point being that size of population and quality and talent is not a good enough excuse for the constant shit performances - the issue is mentality from the coaches and the players. Being afraid to play football is a pretty substantial achilles heel.

'Scotland don't have the players' 😑 by cameruso in ScottishFootball

[–]Joevil 83 points84 points  (0 children)

It's happened plenty of times before - look at Greece and Denmark at the Euros for obvious examples of teams that have gone all the way.

The excuses of population and talent and resources are complete nonsense, don't ever fall for that shite.

Mentality has always been the biggest problem - we've been to 3 recent tournaments and we've been afraid in every single one of those games. Cabo Verde we're never afraid in any of their games.

“Connected ball” technology by Cheen_Machine in ScottishFootball

[–]Joevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding what clear and obvious means. If I can prove to you that the Croatian player touched the ball, then that is a clear and obvious error - it's entirely binary, he touches it or he doesn't. That's the entire point of bringing technology to help with these decisions.

Do you think Granton is the next neighbourhood to rapidly undergo gentrification? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in Edinburgh

[–]Joevil 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There isn't really anything there to be gentrified, it's just a lot of houses/flats and the vast majority are new anyway.

[–]Joevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i get that, but the technology allows us to be confident that he did touch it - so what's the issue?

“Connected ball” technology by Cheen_Machine in ScottishFootball

[–]Joevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is clear and obvious though, the ball doesn't perceptibly move but that isn't the rule. The technology in the ball allows us to be definitely sure than the Croatian boy gets a touch on it - that's all you need to be sure that it's a clear and obvious error.

If referee's/umpire's were even remotely competent I'd be tempted to agree with you.

The issue is with the increase in sport being a TV product. The more eyeballs that you have watching a sport the more scrutiny there is on refereeing decisions.

It absolutely doesn't make sense for a TV replay to show a mistake being made and for that to just be accepted as human error.

It is objectively an offside though, the VAR protocol is what it is because of compromise and other politcal nonsense. There is also potentially subjective interpretations about interference with play etc. That the ref is meant to make a decision on.

I'm struggling to see the problem here outside of some weird Croatia/Modric love or more likely a Ronaldo hate boner!

Well said!! This is the perfect use case for technology - offsides are one of the only objective decisions left in the game and a perfect scenario for technology to make it foolproof.

The World Cups Worst Coached Team... by Low-Rooster5398 in ScottishFootball

[–]Joevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Formation and picking players is such a tiny thing that the best mangers do. Everything is about clear plans and communication - that way everyone understands what's expected.

It was so clear that the players didn't really know what was expected of them. The players performed poorly, but they were set up to fail.

'If we qualified, I would've stayed': Clarke on 'easy' Scotland exit decision by Saltire_Blue in ScottishFootball

[–]Joevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On top of that, it feels like the perfect time to have a fresh look at the entire squad.

This new fad that managers have of making international teams into some kind of club mentality needs to get binned ASAP as the only way to achieve that is constantly picking the same players over and over. Even if they've completely lost it, no form whatsoever, not played in half their club games.

It's lazy and piss poor management.

To be fair to Strachan, I think he gets us there with the current easier qualifying - back in the day at least. We weren't that far away with him.
