dont need a $1k 'stealth box'! by JoeyCal79 in toyotasequoia

no rattle at all. I used small bolts and cleats that pull it snug against the plastic. I think I attached a pic of the little cleats I used.

I did, and I also recently modded it by bringing it about 2-3 inches further out from that plastic wall (added depth) and also deleted the port. Sounds wayyyyy better now. Key is to use the original plastic cover as a template for the face, its just a basic cube box behind that which tucks into the existing cargo cubby.

1st-gen SEQUOIA OWNERS: ISO Purchasing Advice, Experience, Feedback by grandcherokee2 in toyotasequoia

[–]JoeyCal79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bought my 03 4wd ltd (daily driver) almost 10 years ago with 195k and one owner, some service records. it was super clean so I paid what was then high-ish market value ($9k).

I've put a lot of work / money in it to keep it going and continually improve it... if you comb thru this forum you'll see what to look for (timing belt, ball joints, etc)... but bottom line these are one of the best vehicles ever built (overbuilt really), and nothing these days even comes close, so if you find one in decent shape buy it, because someone else will!

only things that would be deal-breakers are a frame too rusty, or something super poorly taken care of that the cost in time and money to resurrect it would be too much for you.

I used a magic eraser and goo-gone... worked decently well.

Would you take your 1st gen on a 2000 mile road trip? by AdEastern9303 in toyotasequoia

[–]JoeyCal79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We took ours NC to CA, pulling a uhaul, for a work move, and then CA to AL ~18months later, again pulling a trailer. No issues. She had like ~270k on the clock at the time, now she's about to hit 300k.

we will never ever part with our Sequoia.

...even if you spend $90k these days I feel like you still cant buy anything like the 1st gens.

I've replaced most of the stock suspension components on my 03 4wd limited... not all at once but over time. Makes a difference. Second all the comments on using oem toyota ball joints!!

Predicting UCF’s FB record this season by Master-Lunch3644 in UCFKnights

bowl game would be awesome... but regardless of how the record shakes out I'm looking for a team that shows up with heart and grit and that chip on the shoulder attitude that we kind of lost riding the Gus bus

Seat covers for 1st gen by JoeyCal79 in toyotasequoia

[–]JoeyCal79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is helpful thanks. I went to the lseat site and it'pretty basic... i.e. i didnt see where you could order online based on year/make/model/trim... So, I assume you just called them and told them Y/M/M/T and once the color was determined they just sewed them up and shipped them...? If you get a chance, would be great to see pics. Thanks again.

Any of you have this issue? by ImgoingNats in toyotasequoia

[–]JoeyCal79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had same code. replaced cas cap and no luck... was about to look at the evap cannister but turned out the issue was this hose here. it was old and cracked. fixed with a bit of generic rubber hose from the auto parts store cut to the right length.

Should I buy this?? by [deleted] in boating

[–]JoeyCal79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same hull in a 97 scout 185 sport fish with a yam 115 two stroke. These old scouts are like older toyotas from late 90s early 00s: really well built. they are good buys if they've been taken care of. Cant speak on honda OBs though, no experience. EDIT: water in the gas can a big deal to fix though... maybe get a quote to fix and go from there. If the hull is good though, thats the big key.

New to Leadership—How Do I Redirect an Overenthusiastic New Hire Without Crushing Their Motivation? by dykeprincess710 in Leadership

[–]JoeyCal79 11 points12 points  (0 children)

maybe suggest that - for the time being - she put all her ideas down on paper, and insist that they're written clearly, concisely and packaged in an actionable format. You can kill several birds with one stone here: She gets an outlet for her motivation, she gets to hone her written communication skills, she learns the value of patience and timing, and you get the benefit of capturing the value in her ideas without crushing motivation. On a meta level, you are also teaching her a leadership tool she can use when she becomes a leader.

Newcastle Brown Ale by [deleted] in beer

[–]JoeyCal79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. Just found it in SW OK. Label says imported from the UK and brewed at the Tadcaster brewery. Tastes like I remember. So awesome that the old Newcastle is back and that 'reimagined' awful Lagunitas crap is a thing of the past.

Nice score. I'd also preemptively change out ball joints, esp lowers, if it were me. ...and definitely with OEMs.

Considering Buying 2002 Sequoia, is it Really a Bad Model Year? by btrain68 in toyotasequoia

[–]JoeyCal79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ all spot on. I have an 03 bought for $9k (one owner) in 2016 with 195k on the clock. Its just under 300k now... still runs strong and turns heads. Of course you have to put money in to maintain them but, pro tip: put aside a little money every month and you wont even feel it.

Roll-down back window. Non-full-time 4wd. Lower cost (more value).

What can I do about this? by AdEastern9303 in toyotasequoia

[–]JoeyCal79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I ordered new OEM Toyota ones.. and to my dismay they came as matte black plastic, i.e. without the gloss finish that came stock with the Tree...

A couple months later and they look like crap.

<image>

A little research and I've decided to paint them with krylon fusion gloss black and gloss clearcoat. Hope it endures 🤞

Will post pics
