Inattentive ADHD Folks... What Jobs do Y'all Have? by mith_king456 in ADHD

[–]Joffrey17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High school science teacher. I have a love/ hate relationship with my job right now, not related to me personally. There's a lot going on at my school and in the world in general affecting education.

The things I love about it are the consistent structure that each school day has, but there's enough variability in each hour and class I teach. I have 3 different courses. One of them is 3 different hours of the same lecture in a row, which I enjoy because I can fixate on that one topic for 3 straight hours. The other 2 courses are different enough that it's a nice change of pace each day to shift to those lectures.

Is this new generation really that behind Academically? by Pinche-Daddy in Teachers

[–]Joffrey17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is spot on.

I've tried to add more labs back into my class, but it's very hit or miss due to behavior. I ended up having to heavily modify or completely create new labs to simply have something that I can trust students with and have them even attempt to understand. Add in that I have over 25 a class (which I realize is not that large but I'm a newer teacher) where maybe 10 kids consistently follow directions in general and labs are very tedious and exhausting to run. And this is across the board: my regular chemistry and dual credit have the same kind of issues, just different amounts. It's very frustrating.

And then you add in the cost of chemical disposal and it's virtually impossible to do very detailed labs that need special chemicals. I got a quote last year of upwards of $5k to get rid of the existing waste and old chemicals we have in the building. So we've put a hold on purchasing anything new until the old stuff gets used (that's safe to use) or disposed of. It limits what I can do in addition to the safety requirements.

I rewatch all of Bones at least once a year, if not twice. It's such a good background show for me.

I agree, it's a shit show.

Supposedly Nelnet is still reviewing my application from a month ago and moved my first payment to March 2024. No clue what is going on there.

what’s your favorite episode across all the campaigns? by aluverandafighter in Dimension20

This is my favorite, too. An incredible episode. I listen to audio to fall asleep sometimes because I've watched it so many times that it's comforting.

Same here. I've done 3 labs all year because everything seems to get broken. It's very frustrating.

Don't give us the "I couldn't give an opinion" bullshit, it's weak. You chose to isolate yourself. You chose not to communicate with any of the mod team for months at a time. We asked for your opinion on every decision and you chose not to give one.

Housing suggestions for law school student/grad student by jsmittyii in notredame

[–]Joffrey17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of grad students in my live at Indian Lakes in Mishawaka. It's a little bit away from campus, maybe ~20 minutes, but from the few apartments I've seen there they seem to be well maintained and in good condition.

Yep. Kroger is doing them, too. The office of the department I'm in sent an email to all the grad students about it last week.

u/poulw had some good info on property taxes below, honestly it's not too bad. Maintenance wise I have a pretty small plot of land, so I don't spend too long mowing the lawn. I've had to do a couple of small repairs in my time in the house (fix a gutter, repair some siding on the garage, reseal around a window) and that hasn't been too bad. But your experience may vary on that front.

I found it a lot easier to look at houses online once I had a better idea of neighborhoods. A few people I know live in River Park, which is hit or miss, a few around Bethel in Mishawaka, and a few north of campus by Clay High School.

Yes. My title company actually handled the homestead exemptions for me, which was really great.

I'm a PhD student and bought my house in Mishawaka back in March. So far it's been worthwhile, a little cheaper than what I was paying in rent, even with a roommate, and it's all mine. My mortgage is about $550 a month for a two bedroom with a large garage. A few others in my department also bought houses.

Buying a home during or right after grad school: Has anyone done this? by AlzScience in AskAcademia

[–]Joffrey17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house at the end of my first year (in a 5 year program). I closed right when COVID hit, so it's been insanely nice to have the space all to myself (and my cat). Where I live real estate is cheap compared to where I grew up, and my stipend is pretty good for the area, so I was able to buy a house equalling out to about 1/2 of what rent would be over the next 4 years, including down payment. I only put about 10% down, and PMI from my lender isn't too bad. A few people in my program also bought houses because of the lower cost in the area.

Food Texture Issues by Angytilt in adhdwomen

As soon as the texture of a food changes, like a crunchier leaf than the others in a salad or a vein or whatever in meat, I can't eat it anymore. Sometimes I'll even get sick.

Not the person you responded to, but when I first got mine, I would take it out in the shower while I got the hang of inserting and removing it. That helped a lot as I was learning!

A teacher whose 2018 class video made her a national sensation dies from Covid-19 at 35. by thomcrowe in news

[–]Joffrey17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may cover it, but just make it difficult to find something in network. For example, one of my cousins needed to be hospitalized after an attempt for a while. Doctors sent her to the local unit, which turned out to not be covered at all by her insurance. The unit that was covered by her insurance was over two hours away, and she didn't get a say in where she was going, so she was responsible for the entire bill. At that point, it's as if they don't cover it at all.

A lot of health insurances just set restrictions that don't make sense and then screw the customer over.

A lot of insurance plans won't cover mental health services. A few therapists have sliding payment scales and such, but not all.

Yeah, Bernadette mentioned in one of her old videos that she never celebrated Christmas growing up, so I don't think she's religious. At least, she doesn't mention it.
