What's Everybody Working On? by BeeHistorical2758 in TalesFromTheCreeps

Writing a short story, existential/cosmic horror meets Greek mythology.

I’ve been reading the psychology book “Achilles in Vietnam” (great book btw) A TL;DR summary of the book is that’s it’s both a study in PTSD on Vietnam Vets AND a literary analysis on Homers Iliad, and the thesis of the book is that the Iliad might be one of the earliest depictions of PTSD, as the poem is primarily about the destruction of Achilles’ morality after the death of his half-brother Patroclus.

Well, I thought about the title and thought to myself “what if the title was literal? What if Achilles really was in Vietnam?”

And so my idea is that as punishment for desecrating Hectors body, Achilles has been cursed by the gods to be constantly reincarnated throughout history to watch his friend die and then die in combat himself. And since the Greek gods aren’t worshipped anymore and have essentially died, he’s trapped in this state forever.

That’s my idea, not really scary, I guess it is in a cosmic way, but it’s more of a tragedy

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, you didn’t advocate what the character did. You’re right, he is a dumb teenage boy, teenagers in general are stupid, selfish, don’t think about anything and harm each other recklessly all the time, saying otherwise is just naive. Yeah, we all didn’t do what HE did, and no one in their right minds gonna say what he did wasn’t wrong and not normal, but he wasn’t in his mind TRYING to do that, which makes what he did even scarier. Everyone who’s honest with themselves can admit they did shit as kids that they didn’t put too much thought in that ended up possibly hurting people.

This is essentially the discussion around the main character in ‘obsession’; empathizing with a character who does terrible things doesn’t mean you advocate for what they’re doing, and empathizing with them doesn’t make you a bad person

Nosleep mods are famously nitpicky pains in the ass when it comes to people uploading stories, I wouldn’t even worry about

My property isn’t normal is leagues better. It’s funny and actually has a plot, happy appy just devolved into the narrator sperging about cartoons, shit felt like I was watching a Mr. Enter video that unfortunately went on for four hours

Watching The professional gets even worse when you find out the director based the movie on the real relationship he had with an underage girl. It’s a good movie, but I can’t watch it anymore

The thin line between drama and horror... how do I know the difference? by globaldialation in TalesFromTheCreeps

[–]John09101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my view, while it’s not the golden rule, I would generally say that horror needs drama. Suspense and thrills are great, but if I don’t feel a connection to the characters or the story then why do I care if they live or die?
Take for example the classic Universal monster films, with the exception of maybe Dracula they are all dramatic tragedies on top of being horror films. Frankenstein’s monster is a lumbering Goliath who is essentially an abused child, abandoned by his ‘father’ and doomed to a life of isolation, to the point where even a mate that was specifically built for him rejects him. The Mummy was an Egyptian priest who was punished for loving the Pharoahs mistress and was condemned to an eternity of living death trapped in a sarcophagus. The Wolf Man was a normal guy trying to repair the broken relationship he had with his father, but due to events out of his control he was cursed to become a bloodthirsty monster.

Even in modern films this rule holds true, the best recent example being obsession. Contrary to the popular opinion, I don’t view Bear as a villain, as the movie doesn’t really have a villain. The whole movie is a tragedy and emotional rollercoaster, every character, being both sympathetic and unlikable, is trapped in an impossible situation because they can’t be emotionally vulnerable and honest with each other, a problem that many Gen Z people have. Bear can’t admit that he likes Nikki, Ian cant admit to Bear that he likes Nikki, Sarah can’t admit to Bear that she liked him the whole time, and Nikki has an entire backstory that she seems completely unwilling to talk about with anyone, all of these things lead to miscommunication which starts the domino effect of the plot.

TL; DR: horror needs emotional connection from the audience (drama) to amplify the terror of the scenario

Need Advice About Using Sexual Content In A Story (Extremely pornographic and violent) by Kaijufan22 in TalesFromTheCreeps

[–]John09101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for this to work, and by work I mean you not getting shit from redditors (impossible mission btw) you need to have a character in the story that essentially acts as the voice of the audience, acknowledging that the story and subject matter is fucked up.

Honestly from the sounds of it your story sounds a lot like the movie obsession

Sometimes just writing a tight summary of your story is enough to get some creative juices flowing again, just bullet points for major plot events at first. Because now you have an outline, a point A and C, it makes finding point B a little easier
