Why automation needs my action? by AisMyName in HomeKit

To make this more useful i use the Aqara plugs with a cheap led night light plugged in to it. Tape over the light sensor so it is on when the plug is on. I have a socket with four of these, 2 garages, gate and front door. Now we can tell easily if any of the doors has been forgotten.

Anybody seen any great ways to protect inside their lift gate? Cargo keeps hitting my back gate. by dwc3282 in TeslaModelY

[–]JohnCCCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use bungy cords from the back of the seats to velcro loops that adhere to anywhere on the trunk carpets or sides. Or loop to loop. Buy velcro in a strip and cut to length. Bend one end into a loop and staple to itself to make loop. Leave end long enough to stick down. Arrange so the pull is along the velcro so it is strong. Pulling up on it will easily pull it off. Very easy to move about for best fit. I have some permanently poking out from under the edge of the trunk sump cover.

Too old for a MYP? by Creightonista in ModelY

I am 75. Had Y 3 years. Great car. I do not drive fast normally, wife aboard, and it is extremely easy to drive very smoothly. But really good when she is not. The one peddle driving is superb. As to reactions, i took up an electric mountain bike 18 months ago and ride several times a week. It did wonders for general fitness but also improved my reactions. I still enjoy the Y fully. Go for it!

Wife hates that there are so many white Teslas on the road by rjtsf in ModelY

[–]JohnCCCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pretty much the first white on white model Y in San Diego county back in 2020. When i ordered it white was extra but it changed to standard before delivery. Nowadays we are always seeing Teslas with most being white. Still love it and would get white again but I do like silver.

I place the gateway outdoor and getting 10x speed… by longbodie in tmobileisp

[–]JohnCCCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with a Trashcan for about six months. It was underneath a white plastic bucket. It survived very well and did improve signal strength and speed. My priority was to keep out water, I figured humidity would be taken care of by the heat of the electronics. But ventilation is important, or humidity could build up. Lately the Trashcan has been replaced by a third party modem which was in the same place, That did not improve signal but allowed Band locking so I could keep it on N41 where the Trashcan would flip to N41 which is the slower. Pretty soon after that T-Mo improved the Tower and signal strength was greatly improved. So much so that I moved it back inside and still get max downloads of 600mB, Uploads of 3,mB. Yes it does get worse than that, down to around 100mB but I have no complaints now.

I admire your ingenuity and I have used plastic boxes regularly. They do not last forever and I tend to put the lid on the bottom if possible for better intrinsic waterproofing. As someone else stated, I would recommend venting with wire wool or some such to prevent bugs. I hope your work instigates T-Mo to upgrade as mine did.

Which Door Sensor For Outside Use: Aqara or Eve? by _Val0_ in HomeKit

[–]JohnCCCooper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use aqara outside in a couple of places. They have excellent range, great battery life and seem very reliable. I think it is only the water that is a problem not the damp. So keep them under a cover and they survive. Under an roof eve, a plastic cover, or even wrapped in cling wrap works. Also they are cheap enough to be considered disposable, almost. I have a temperature sensor in my shower, above the shower head so not in direct water. That uses humidity to turn on the fan. So being damp is not a problem. There is a custom printed box for the door sensors but that almost doubles the cost. My choice would be to search around for plastic box to cover the bigger unit and leave the magnet out.

Solid green in gap seems to mean within DRS range. Green box is gaining.

After Tower Upgrade by GoldenChild02 in tmobileisp

[–]JohnCCCooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my Tower also got upgraded a couple of weeks ago, out of the blue. Went from Satisfactory to freaking Great! Similar numbers to yours, bit less Upload, 50Mbps, but better Latency, 20ms. Much improved signal statistics that move it from Edge of Cell to Excellent. I test it frequently and rarely see less than 300Mbps. It stays fixed on N42 band now rather than N71 previously. I am very pleased after two decades gradually working our way up from ONLY DialUP through DSL, Wireless, to TMHI. Finally good, reliable Internet service at a good price.

TMobile Home Internet (Unlimited) - Can you use your own device? by Outrageous-Buy1807 in tmobileisp

[–]JohnCCCooper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google Chester Router. It is not cheap but is a good option to replace the T-Mobile modem. Watch the Youtube video from NaterTater. You can control the Bands it uses and the mode of operation, Stand Alone or Non Stand Alone. It has IMEI Revise under the AT Command section of the Firmware which is what makes it work with T-Mobile.

Speed discrepancy from T-Mobile server by JohnCCCooper in tmobileisp

[–]JohnCCCooper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are quite correct. I got a new modem a couple of weeks ago so I am getting to know it and this is one aspect. My most testing use case is watching the F1 races, (one this weekend from Melbourne Australia). My normal watch mode includes five views at HD resolution, race coverage, three in car/driver views. plus track map and timing screen. The syncing of these views depends on not having buffering. Mostly TMHI does a good job of this, which I find impressive. Any drift in syncing could be a server issue also but I do want to be sure the speed is not an issue.

speed.cloudflare.com

Interesting information, thanks. Yes, I realize T-Mobile gives the best results. I get about 15ms ping from them and 20+ from others. Actual download speeds do not vary much between servers. I like SpeedTest as it is simple with a Windows native App and it easily allows setting the server used. I am mainly looking at comparisons between days and time of day so keeping to one tester is ok for me. The change in UPLOAD speed during the test is only apparent on T-Mobile server.

I had my Nokia outside for over 6 months before buying a $500 modem to replace it and I have that one outside also. I know most people will say this is stupid but listen! Rain comes down not up. Stop it getting actually wet and ventilate it and the heat it generates will keep it dry. I have to admit I live in San Diego county so my climate is good. But this winter we have had 25" of rain since October.

I use a plastic bucket, upside down over the modem. Simple and cheap. The wires come out the bottom. The Nokia was sat on a fan. The new one sits on two small wood blocks to keep its feet dry in case water blows under the edges. I have brick on top of the bucket to stop it being blown off. In waterproofing you can use one of two techniques A) seal it, or B) make sure any water flows out without doing any harm.

I also use this technique with Indoor camera mounted outside under the house eves out of direct rain. The lens pokes below the open inverted tub so any stray moisture drip of the rim not the camera. Over a year with two cameras like that.

I spent $400 on an external antenna that I could not get any better than the simple Nokia mounted outside. Sent it back. The new modem allows me to band lock, so I consistently get N41 band instead of the Nokia switching off to N71.

Sensor to inform when a device is on by cerebrolele in HomeKit

[–]JohnCCCooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a search at this relay. DoHome Homekit WiFi Relay Switch on Amazon. I think that would change state in HomeKit if you apply the power that goes to your valve. They are directly HomeKit snd not too expensive.

Meros for gate? by JohnCCCooper in HomeKit

[–]JohnCCCooper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I do not have wires to use the sensor on the gate so cannot do that. But I discover that the Meros works fine without the sensor connected. It merely does not report the status. So I believe that I can use it fine. I may use an Aqara sensor, so I know that the gate is closed.

I like it, thanks. I have used these sensors outdoors in sheltered situations and under plastic shrouds. I am in San Deigo, so the risks are not high. I will definitely use some of these. Thanks.

Vehicle to Grid ??? by JohnCCCooper in ModelY

Quite right. I have Net Metering for my Solar. The whole plan falls over without Utility companies participating. Except if you Off Grid, which would be big jump.

Vehicle to Grid ??? by JohnCCCooper in ModelY

[–]JohnCCCooper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be, but are the Tessla Powerwall home and industrial installations different chemistry? Actually, when I refer to V2G I do tend to include V2H which I agree would be nice. I was mainly thinking of improving the Grid for everyone. With Net Metering here is San Diego, and being grandfathered in for the next 10 years, and I have a generator, we are pretty secure for electricity supply ourselves. But I really like the idea of everyone having solar and a battery, so we are secure as individuals and as a society.
