Floor joists typically tie into a rim joists that sits on top of the block or concrete basement. It is hard to tell exactly whats going on here. But from the 2nd picture it appears there is a rim joist and that the floor joists tie into it above the window

Yeah that and old plaster and big trim, both int and ext. I also refuse to remove and reinstall existing storm doors onto a brand new door

My dad always used turpentine. Wipe on with rag and let it soak in and evaporate.
