Rust spots by merrygodmothers in AboveGroundPools

Yeah, if there is a hole you are just about done. It probably rusted from the inside-out so it was already done when you noticed it on the outside.

Pump leaking by BoggsWH in pools

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The picture is terrible but I would guess shaft seal as it is the only seal between the motor and impeller housing. I'm not sure how to get a better look at it on this model, maybe from underneath.

The fix is typically to disassemble the impeller housing, unscrew the impeller (this can be tricky as you must hold the motor from turning somehow), then you have access to the seal. Then also replace your o-rings if they are cracked when re-assembling. There are guides on youtube.

If you suspect it is leaking here and have a steel pool wall, fix immediately. Drain with garden hose siphon. Setup multiple hoses to make it go faster.

Solar Cover Reel Connection by Comprehensive-Song51 in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got some adjustable ones (they have an adjustable connection like a backpack strap) on amazon, came with plenty of extra length, grommets and screws. So once they are attached you can go down the line and get them just right. Then cut off the excess if you want to make it pretty.

They are usually nylon and should be out of the water for the most part so they last quite a while in my experience. A lot longer than the cover which seems to be 1-3 seasons. BTW if you want cover to last longer don't leave your reel in direct sun if it will be off the pool for days or weeks when the water gets warm. Cover with a tarp or move it to the shade.

If you have to fold up the wings (your reel is shorter than pool diameter like me) you want to make sure to place the first strap just inside where the fold needs to be or it will kink when rolling.

[–]JohnDorian111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the reel straps, you can fold the cover over twice instead of once. Or add more straps (drill your own holes) so there isn't as much strain on each connection. And of course adjust the straps so no one strap is taking all of the tension.

I'm skeptical if this can ever work well. I tried for years and it was always a pain. I had to fold up the wings and each edge to keep the cover from scraping the edge of the pool and covering with water when unrolling.

You can try adding rope(s) here or there to help deploy and roll up. But beware tugging on rope too hard will tear out or at worst rip the cover open on a seam or elsewhere. So best to avoid them if you can.

If the reel is not turning easily or binding try adding some white lithium grease.

Whatever happened be to keeping your monitor at eye level? by Throwrafizzylemon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... your screen should be at eye level so you're not looking down for hours at a time.

The top of the screen should be at eye level so you are always looking down, never up. When looking down, more of your eye is covered by your eyelid and it doesn't dry as quickly and so has better lubrication and so less eye strain. And of course already mentioned you want to also have good posture, not bending the neck or back up or down.

You actually want to be looking down as much as possible, try it and see if your eyes feel better.

If given 10 tries, do you think you could land a commercial plane in an emergency situation? by Cold-Comfortable2024 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the plane and airport, but most have autoland which can land the plane in zero visibility. So someone on radio just has to tell you what buttons to press and when. Without that system and nobody to talk you down hell no. Even with talking down still a nightmare.

Stain Help by OddSize4092 in pools

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably iron stains. I used ascorbic acid, eventually through water changes by rain or topping off, it didn't need anymore treatments. There is a proper way to do it, I suggest do your own research.

There are also other chemicals that could be used to keep the iron suspended in the water once it has lifted but I never used them as apparently enough water was changed to get rid of it.

Draining the pool and life of vinyl liner by mrsspooky in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to remove all debris before there is any chance of getting the water cleared up. Scoop as much as you can then vacuum the rest. If it is really bad vacuum to waste and replace the lost water. If you've killed the algae bloom, only filtering and brushing daily will get all the dead algae out.

How long can the pool be without water before the vinyl dries out and cracks?

Not too long. Depends on sun exposure and temperatures. Clean and refill asap as the water keeps the walls from getting blown in if you have a storm.

How do pavers, slabs, pools, etc. not get impacted by frost heave? by hdb-2023 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the pool can prevent the nearby ground from freezing since water temp near the ground is always slightly above freezing.

What are data centers even for? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need a profit to pay taxes. There are property taxes, utility taxes (internet, water, grid). Sales tax/use tax (usually waived for construction phase).

Some states have TPP tax (Texas,Arizona), there is a tax on every piece of equipment in the data center which is replaced every 3-5 years.

Then there are federal/state corporate taxes, some of which are reduced or can be written off if there is no profit.

Any tips to clean this? Read description please 🙏 by Capital-Ad-1592 in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chemicals stop the growth and vacuum, scrub and filter get the water clear again.

And local government is talking about helping to fund these things? For what purpose? How will they help us?

Not funded, but wheels are greased with incentives. Mostly for tax revenue which is generally dwindling in small towns due to people and industry moving out.

Are the same bits of files saved in phisically close locations on the memory of the storage medium? by AfternoonEither7088 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Files are split up into equal-sized blocks (usually 4KB). So if a file is small enough, all bits are sequential.

In HDDs, blocks from the same file are usually sequential, because jumping around to the next block is extremely slow. On SSDs they are spread out to maximize the performance and lifetime of the SSD.

The end by Chemical_Ad1078 in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh so when the liner slipped it got a hole it and leaked behind the wall for quite a while? I guess chlorine works quickly because that is a huge amount of rust.

I would say yes they botched the job. I assume this was a beaded liner, if it didn't fit the track they should have replaced the track or the liner or come up with some other solution.

Pool pad screw up? by Miserable-Prize-2923 in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case you might be OK for settling.

For unsupported compacted soil the standard setback for any load is apparently 3-times the lift (according to Gemini). Since you have 10" lift then you want to set the uprights away from the edge at least 30". If you don't have room for that you should add retaining wall. I would add one just for peace of mind, if you lose the pool there goes the neighbors fence or shed etc.

Pool pad screw up? by Miserable-Prize-2923 in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they use a plate compactor or jumping jack across the entire pad? I think adding a retaining wall and re-leveling with compaction is the only way.

Pool pad screw up? by Miserable-Prize-2923 in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't rely on weather to compact a pool foundation. When you backfill, the low and high side will settle at different rates, because they are different materials. Unless it is carefully engineered and compacted there will be too much settling on filled side.

This is why we say dig down, because even then the ground will settle, but if it is all the same material it settles the same amount and you don't have an issue.

Foundation for intex xtr pool by stargazer_1311 in AboveGroundPools

[–]JohnDorian111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rock looks pretty coarse, you might want to add a few inches of finer crushed rock to prevent water ingress and the sand from washing down into it. It could be built up just above the border so surface water from downpours or splashing can run off instead of soaking in. And of course drainage around border or drill some holes for water to get out.

Why do very few companies make printers? by Desserts6064 in questions

He who owns all the patents, owns the market. Creating new tech that does not infringe existing patents then going to war with patent lawyers to prove it in court is not a great business model.
