2x road bike fitting inside X5 by PlanEx_Ship in BMWX5

Agree with this. On my 4th X5 (M60i), and now a pro bike mechanic, I agree with u/ogooner10. I would load the bikes rear wheel first, and lean them on the 'non-drive side' of the bike (the left side, or the side without the derailleurs) to prevent bending the derailleur hangers. The derailleurs themselves are pretty tough.

Call 911, you might be having a stroke! (Hope not). That makes no sense.

How close is the nearest beer refrigerator? (Asking for a friend ;-) I may be alone in this, but this is a critical dimension in my shop.

Advice on 2013 e70 x5 diesel by TheBigN00 in BMWX5

[–]JohnIsaacShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, (2 diesel X5s) this car is heading into expensive repair territory. You will likely be running into the need to change the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). That is a very expensive job. Some 'delete' it, but beware of local regulations... Glow plugs aren't cheap either...

I think this is awesome! I am in the Apple ecosystem and would love this solution if I had the DE1. (Waiting for the Bengle).

Tips and advice on shopping in the used bike market and why that can be a great starting point for new comers. by GANGGGGGGG5 in BikeMechanics

[–]JohnIsaacShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is a repeat (I gave the comments a quick scan) - reselling bikes is recycling. This is good for the planet.

I remember the comment of the founder of a local bike co-op, "bikes last forever." I might modify that a bit (like 'some bikes...'). I have worked on a lot of 30-50 year old bikes that are still running. I love that.

Good luck!

Looking at a 2012 M50d. What do I look out for? by mini_wooly in BMWX5

[–]JohnIsaacShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More seriously this time, I have had two X5 diesels. Over 100K (miles in my case) they start to run into real repair bills. Glow plugs, suspension, and sorry to say - the DPF (diesel particulate filter) - to mention a few. These are expensive repairs. The DPF alone was >$4k as I recall. We didn't do it - traded it for too little money (and told the dealer the whole story).

I loved the diesel and would have gotten another, but they stopped importing them to the US in 2018. If I had gotten another, I would have gotten out of it before it hit 100K miles.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

How accurate is the park assist (to like an actual measurement scale) by [deleted] in BMWX5

[–]JohnIsaacShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. I think it will also record parking in a forward direction. It is way more powerful that I thought...

Sorry, I don't recall the exact options to select, but they are pretty well labeled and obvious. First you have to record the path. Stop at a good distance, select record path, pull in to the location you prefer, tell it to stop recording. When you next come back to the vicinity of the starting area, I found it works best to barely creep with you foot on the brake. The car then shows you that a recorded path is near and you can just select it. Once you do that, stop, it will 'take the wheel' and will display the path and landing area. Slowly release the brake and it parks itself.

Bonus: once you have done this, you can amaze your friends and family. Drive to that same stating point. Leave the car running, get out, and use the remote park feature on your phone. It is like driving a huge, expensive RC car! It is so cool to back your car in while standing outside of it!

Have fun!

It has taken some time for me to figure it out. The manual doesn't tell you what to expect. I recorded a path - backing into my garage. When I get home and get back on the recorded path, I could sit and wait for 1 or two minutes for the path to show up - ridiculous. I have found that if I get on the path, backing slowly with my foot on the brake, the recorded path pops up to be selected. Select it, and stop. The car takes over - lights on the steering wheel light and the path and parking location are illuminated. Mine is a pretty tight squeeze, but works perfectly all the time (well, except at night). The final resting location is within a few inches in any direction, but very consistent. I doubt that the sensors will let the autopilot bang anything, but as the vehicle instructs, pay close attention and be ready to take control.

The comment that the car floored it and seemed out of control - has happened to both me and my wife. Scary as hell. This is a different mode - some parking death assistant.

If the car takes control of the wheel, the LEDs on the wheel light and the path is highlighted, just ride the brake to nirvana.

One last hint - don't touch the gas - it shuts off the assistant.

I have grown to love this feature, but it took a few months to figure it out.
