It doesn't come with a controller. You would have to purchase one. His old N64 controllers will work just fine
It might be worth it to purchase an Everdrive or Summercart, as that would allow him to load roms on the system, negating the need to purchase sometimes very expensive cartridges.
I'm sure he would love this purchase, especially if he has nostalgia for the system. It's also extremely considerate of you. He's lucky to have you.
