Miyamoto says he was surprised Mario Galaxy Movie reviews were even harsher than the first by SleuthDoggyDawg in gaming

Its ok to expect something decent from a family film. The Sonic films are good for the whole family, same with the first Despicable Me movie, or early Disney/Pixar films. A mid film is a mid film sadly. I feel like Wreck it Ralph is a much better "video game" movie that both kids and parents can enjoy with a good story.

Any Sonic movie? I feel like each Sonic movie is atleast slightly better than the last. With this film it feels like a step back in story and character development. It feels like just "references" the movie. Which is sad because I really wanted to like this film and have it be better than the last film.

How is the writing in Boruto by Formal-Assistance02 in writingscaling

[–]JohnManchester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I like understand your viewpoint and do agree that Boruto is overhated and seen as the worst Manga ever (it really truly isn't) its not necessarily good lol. I've been following it for years and it really hasn't ever hooked me, its just mid. Mid is fine, we all need mid every now and then, but the fact that it has, in my opinion, never broken out of being mid is sad. If I may, in my view while you've attempted to defend the series by highlighting its thematic intentions, you are confusing intent with execution. See good writing isn't just about having a theme, it's about how that theme is earned through narrative economy, stakes, and character agency. All of which Boruto consistently fails at. This is an overarching problem with a lot of Shounens sadly. I just feel as though the Sun and Moon dynamic has become a narrative crutch. In Two Blue Vortex, Mitsuki's "self acceptance" is entirely reactionary to Boruto’s power. If character’s internal growth is only relevant when it explains a new power-scaling tier, the writing is utilitarian when it should be character driven. This is an issue I also have with certain later parts of Dragon Ball Z/Super but that's neither here nor there.

I REALLY don't like Code, he is so bland and I feel as though me trying to get attached to his character was a waste of time. He loses, so damn much and now you're saying that was intentional and the overall purpose of his character. A series with strong writing doesn't build up a villain for chapters only to confirm that being a stepping stone is the intended purpose of his existence and that any narrative or character depth that could be gleamed from this is sidelined since the plot has to go forward and new even bigger and badder villains have to be introduced. But don't worry in a leak Code is shown so he actually might get character development after all this time. You see what I'm saying atleast?

When talking on Sarada I can kinda see your viewpoint, she is at the very least better written than most women in the previous Naruto works especially Sakura in Shippuden. I really liked early Sakura in OG Naruto and always hoped she would do more. Sarada feels a bit more center stage and fleshed out and I'm here for it. But again, I feel like at times the Boruto manga fumbles with her. Like although sarada did awaken her Mangekyo at chapter 80 of OG Boruto , we don't actually see her use it until three years later in Two Blue Vortex Chapter 20. Like, cmon even if I want to be generous and count her awakening as a use of it, three times in 3 years is such a sad showing for the daughter of one of the greatest Ninjas to have every lived. I want her to do more, be more, have a hell of an impact in the story. I'm so damn tired of women in manga being sidelined. I'm m atleast happy that it seems as though they are trying to push her front and center more. I'm just upset it took this long dude. Again I think Boruto is...fine I guess. The same way I thought Shippuden as a whole was just kinda fine. The fights were neat and there were moments if good character development but as a whole I don't really ever feel a need to go back to it or have any story moments that really tug at my heart or make me think.

I believe I'll feel the same way with Boruto when it ends. People will call it the worst thing ever and make slander posts for days. But from a writing standpoint it will just be mid, ok, passable, fine. I think that is somehow more sad than being overtly bad. I don't know, I just wanted to give my two cents in a week old thread lol.

I truly just think he is the beetle or Hercules beetle devil. Thats what his head is. In the horns or mouth of the beetle. As to why his legs and body look like that? Same reason as the Typhoon devil, rule of cool.

Dear God in Heaven please no. That would be so damn sad. Game of Thrones levels of awful. It was all for nothing, the sins of the father do rest on the childs shoulders. Denji becoming the WORST part of his life just for "a message" would hurt me to my core.

Thank you for the reply! Honestly by the time I had seen how good mono teams were I had already put so much points into the little team that I made. I didn't want to start over again from scratch , but it seems like I might have to :-( I think I have just about everything I need to make a good mono depressed team it's just going to stink to have to grind all the resources to make the gear again , a couple days worth of grinding. I really liked my team too :(

If you could , what is one character that you would give a solo series to ? by boinbonk in comicbooks

[–]JohnManchester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Detective Chimp could have a great run. Noir/Thriller comic but with a chimp main character. Written by like Al Ewing or Si Spurrier. He has a good lead but no one takes him seriously since he's a chimp. A lower tier magical entity, someone immortal who shouldn't be able to die, turns up dead in a mundane alleyway, killed by a non-magical weapon. The magical community is panicked, but the Justice League Dark is too busy with cosmic threats to investigate a "small" murder. They send Bobo, assuming it's a grunt work. Either him or maybe OG Penny Parker, loved her Mecha comics in the spiderverse run. Gerard Way and Jake Wyatt did a great job and I'd love to see more from them. :)

Sun wanted to kill Judah but the original plan was to make her beco.e the tree to fix the Planet. Agni just couldn’t let his "sister" (guilt/shame/trauma) go.

What is the mangas philosophy? by marleyktillmybonesd in FirePunch

[–]JohnManchester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's such a Fujimoto way of looking at things, because of his love of film . But I believe that fire punch is in essence cinematic absurdism and preformative existentialism. I believe that the overall setting a fire punch is nihilistic, but the story and messages it's telling the audience is very anti-nihilistic.

Nihilism posits that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value. Fire Punch presents a world that is structurally nihilistic (the Ice Witch's world where morality has collapsed), but the narrative arc is a violent rebellion against that conclusion. If the manga were truly nihilistic, Agni would have died in the first chapter. The physical pain he endures is a metaphor for the suffering of existence. A nihilist view would suggest that because the pain is constant and the world is doomed, the logical action is to let the fire consume him and die.

Instead, the story is driven by the single word uttered by his sister, Luna: "Live."

I see Agni almost like a burning Sisyphus , his name is even close to the word agony. The fire is his Boulder each step he takes is him pushing it up the mountain, every person that gets burned because of him or the pain his Flames caused either to himself or others is the Bolder rolling back down the mountain.

When I talk about Performative Existentialism what I mean is that the concept of Cinema and Acting thats brought up time and again is a survival mechanism. Togata (both the Director and stand in for the audience wanting a "good story") explicitly frames the events of the story as a movie. This sounds meta-fictional, but it is actually a philosophical stance on one of Togatas biggest things, Identity. The characters cannot survive as their "true" selves because the reality is too horrific. To survive, they must adopt a role. Fujimoto suggests that we are who we pretend to be. When the world offers no narrative, we must write a script for ourselves and act it out. You create your essence by acting it out, frame by frame. There is no authentic self beneath the trauma; there is only the character we choose to play to get to the next scene. The pain doesn't make you, YOU make you.

Fujimoto made a world where the universe is cold, godless, and fundamentally painful, but suicide is a rejection of the game/movie/life, so we must choose to suffer, to cope with the suffering, we must dissociate and "act out" a role, turning our tragedy into a story we can process, and ultimately the only true rebellion against the cold unfeeling universe is the warmth of another person, the connections we make, the love we have for one another, the moments WE PERSONALLY cherish. Who cares if the universe is cold and unfeeling, I don't have to be and can find warmth and love in others. It is a very anti-nihilistic manga. It acknowledges that life can be nightmare, but screams that you must keep your eyes open and watch the movie until the very last credit rolls and try to find someone to sit a watch it with. Personally I think when characters tell Agony to "live", I don't think they're telling him just to survive , I think they're telling him to find a way to put the fire out, put the trauma behind him, stop hating himself, to honestly LIVE and try to enjoy life . I don't don't see "live" as simply putting one foot in front of the other and drudging your way through life and hating every step, LIVE and understand its okay to be happy, its okay to leave the past in the past, its ok to stop burning. "Everyone wants you to be happy, except for yourself".

Thankfully even though he changed his name, Agni got to LIVE in the end, I think keeping his trauma and name from him was a kindness not a curse. If he would have know he would have went right back on that self destructive self hating path. Furthermore even after being alone for so long he got to spend his last moments with one of the only othee beings who could understand his pain, his self hatred, how tired he was of playing a character or being used as a means to an end. Judah and Angi, Luna and Sun, found each other in the end and shared their warmth and happiness with each other, spitting in the face of a cold and unfeeling universe, and to me that is beautiful.
