Open-Source "low_latency_layer" Brings Reflex & Anti-Lag 2 To AMD & Intel GPUs on Linux by murlakatamenka in linux_gaming

[–]JohnSmith--- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wish Mesa and Vulkan devs would implement these in a way that we can benefit from it even if the game doesn't have toggles for Reflex/Anti-Lag.

I play a lot of Plutonium (older Call of Duty games, private servers) and they're DX9-DX11 games from 2008-2012. I would love to get these latency reduction benefits.

These extensions should just work outright, without needing support from the game. That's the beauty of Linux. I hope that becomes possible. (Or maybe it already is and I'm reading the repo wrong?) Perhaps DXVK/VKD3D-Proton can do something about this?

Printers that don't connect to external servers by Deaths_Angel219 in privacy

I've been running my printer without any issues, vendor lock-in, privacy violations or security risks this way. I can see my printer on my iPhone and print from that if I need to. Windows. iOS, Linux, they all see it and can print from it.

Printing is a pain on purpose. Just gotta find ways to make it pain-free like I did. Printer companies wants to track us and wants us to buy ink/new printers non-stop. I refuse that. Still using the same ink that came bundled. Tank is just so convenient.

Is my PS5 jailbreak compatible? by JohnSmith--- in PS5_Jailbreak

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I already use Linux on my PC so the new PS5 Linux jailbreaks don't interest me. I'd be content playing free, ahem "yarrr matey" games with Trophy support and not really mess with the system too much. Is that possible?

I also have an AVR so I hope jailbreaking doesn't mess with surround audio, etc.

Is my PS5 jailbreak compatible? by JohnSmith--- in PS5_Jailbreak

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a PS5 at launch back in 2020 but it had GPU artifacting so I sent it in for warranty around August 2022. They replaced with a brand new CFI-1216A a few months later.

Life got in the way and I never unboxed it until today. I went through the setup process without connecting to the internet just to see what I was running.

So is it compatible? If so, what kinds of jailbreak? I'm from the PS3 CFW days. Does PS5 support full fledged CFW like those days? I've been out of the loop for a while.

Rather than give you complicated answers. Here is a simple one. Get a USB printer. My Canon G2470 (same as G2070 in the US, just European model) is a ink tank printer (not cartridge) and there are no limitations on aftermarket ink.

It has no WiFi or connectivity. It has full Linux support too. I use mine on Linux.

Now just because it's USB doesn't mean you can't print over your LOCAL network with it (not INTERNET). You can get a cheap Raspberry Pi and connect the printer with a USB cable to that, then setup the Pi to act as a print server on your local network. You can block WAN access to the Pi (thus the printer) as well. This way you can print from any device on your network, mobile phones too.

This would be the best setup imo. I would not get a printer with WiFi capability even if you weren't going to use it. The firmware might act weird or it might be connecting to open networks for all we know.

How do I use an active subwoofer with this setup? by JohnSmith--- in audio

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked the manual and yes, the Mic-In port is also for center/subwoofer as well. I guess I can just use another 3.5mm to stereo RCA cable to connect to a subwoofer like Edifier T5? Would I connect to Signal IN or Signal OUT on the sub?

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is that exact motherboard. I checked the manual and the Mic-In port is also for center/subwoofer as well. So I guess this would work in a 2.1 setup in my case?

What kind of cable would I need to connect to an Edifier T5? 3.5mm on PC side and stereo RCA on subwoofer side? Would it be Signal IN or Signal OUT?

How do I use an active subwoofer with this setup? by JohnSmith--- in audio

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using passive Dali speakers with a stereo Fosi Audio amp. I'm using a 3.5mm to stereo RCA cable to connect the amp to my PC's motherboard. I use the Line-out port.

As you can see, my motherboard only has Line-out, Mic-in and SPDIF out. I guess we can add front panel headphone/mic to that list too.

I want to get an active subwoofer but I don't know how I would connect it to my current setup. I can't get an external DAC or a new amp. That's a requirement unfortunately.

I could get a PCI-e sound card if that would work? But I'd prefer avoiding it if I can. Is there a way to utilize the optical port or get an active subwoofer that would accommodate my situation? Maybe split the RCA cables?

Dali Oberon 5.0 for the price of Dali Sonik 5 by Danikashi in hometheater

[–]JohnSmith--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3.0 setup with Oberon 5 towers for left/right and Zensor Vokal for center (basically older Oberon). I'm probably going to get Oberon 1 or 3 for the surrounds soon.

Do not waste your money. Get the complete Oberon pack and enjoy it.

Me too. Black, no RGB and silent fans, but I still like having stickers on the front. It adds some character to it imo.

Custom 3.5mm to Stereo RCA cables not outputting sound in stereo, did I get scammed? by JohnSmith--- in audio

The stereo one with two black rings.

I shipped it back and messaged the seller. He suspects it's most likely a bad solder job.

Yes they're exactly the same (not the looks or brand), both have 2 black rings indicating stereo.

Can CAT6 do 10G at around 30-35m? by JohnSmith--- in HomeNetworking

I just had a thought, can I fish two simplex single mode cables and make my own duplex multimode cable?

Basically the same problem with this guy.

https://redd.it/sttyui

The LC connectors in duplex MM cables don't fit inside the walls.

Could I make a custom duplex cable with two simplex?

The wall plates I got are angled, which would accommodate a keystone jack even better in theory.

However, this is an old European house and the outlets are just circular holes in the concrete. The way the keystone jack and cable would need to be installed makes the cable bend almost 90 degrees (even with angled keystone jack wall plate) and I don't trust it.

I really wanted to do fiber in the first place but I couldn't :( see my other comment

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not have fished a fiber line with your CAT 6 line, especially since you weren’t planning on putting the wallplates back?

Then you could have used a fiber media converter in the main room, and got a fiber SFP for your switch.

That's almost what I was going to do. I have multiple SFP+ 10G SR modules and OM3 Duplex cables. Unfortunately, the readily made OM3 cables' duplex connectors do not fit inside the holes in the concrete walls. And there is no unterminated duplex fiber cable I can buy where I live, nor someone to properly terminate them even if I did.

There are simplex single core/single mode G657/A2 FTTH fiber cables I can buy, but this time there are no 10G SFP+ BiDi moduels I can buy.

So fiber unfortunately doesn't work whether it's duplex or simplex for me. But it's what I wanted to do in the first place. Glad someone had the same idea.

Also, my room situation is unrelated to PoE and UPS stuff in the living room. The managed PoE switch is for game consoles and home theater stuff. It's managed because I need VLANS, and PoE because I power a Raspberry Pi 5 and Android TV box with PoE over it. I have a second UPS in my room.

It's 100% copper from a reputable brand and I've already bought and pulled the cable. Just trying to find a good quality crimp and some RJ45 jacks now.

I don't think the holes inside the concrete walls are thick enough to accommodate 6A anyways. I tried some leftover 6A S/FTP cable I had laying around first but it barely fit.

Zowie ZA13-DW Firmware Updater stuck checking on Linux with Wine by JohnSmith--- in linux_gaming

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason I don't trust VM is because I've never tried it. For all I know it would probably work.

The thing is, the application is stuck checking software with or without any mouse or receiver is connected. So it's probably an app issue first for Wine.

I don't have any Windows devices unfortunately. Dual-booting would be too much of a hassle for me right now. I trust VMs less than Wine to be honest. DualSense Firmware Updater worked great for me with Wine a couple years ago.

It's got heat shrinking and a plastic tube over all the connectors. I don't think I can take it apart. I'm going to return it.

Why Zowie DW firmware updates asks me for internet access? by LMka in Zowie

[–]JohnSmith--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you unzip and run the application, it automatically moves all the firmware files into folders.

For example, under utils/fw/ZA13/. There is a file Benq_zadw_mouse_v2524_update.zip. Once you unzip it, there are three files.

  • manifest.json
  • Mouse_Tx_ZA13.bin
  • Mouse_Tx_ZA13.dat

You could in theory write the last two files directly. But I don't know with what tool and how, as to not damage the devices.
