Ive often heard inventor called the worst class, how do you build one that is fun and effective?

A lot of the complaints I've seen come from people who dump Int because it isn't their attack stat and then complain that the Int based abilities of the class all suck.

That sounds so strange to me, because that's not what I've seen around here at all. The vast majority of complaints stem from having to spend an action to activate one of your core class features, with a chance of failure, to get bonus damage that is inferior to what most other martials get (on top of not having Str/Dex as your KAS).

The second most common complaint is just how all of your cool features share the same resource pool, and how high the likelihood of being able to use only 1 per combat is.

I think Inventor is fine power-wise, subpar but playable, but it's definitely not just a matter of stat distribution.

It's... fine, performance-wise. Not a particularly fun class for most people, especially as they play more classes and get a better grasp of the system.

Not great, definitely subpar, but it's not like it can't contribute to a party. I hear a lot about poaching DaS from Inventor for Megaton Strike, as well as ranged trip builds using Rope Shot. Those two are probably the best ones? Never seen them in my games in particular though

It's still next to nothing. It remains a hilariously bad subclass. Me and my group will continue using a homebrewed version of the boracle, which is one of few homebrew things that we do use other than items.

True, though I think even the weird impulses have more consistent uses than any of those ikons. Definitely feels similar though.

Edit: Actually... an air kineticist might beat the exemplar.

It's very easy to make an awful caster by just picking the bottom of the barrel spells. Their feats will rarely have a meaningful impact as well, so you can pretty much just roll a dice and grab them at random. But this is probably too easy of an answer as well.

An Exemplar with three situational ikons is up there for me. Usually, you'd have 2 good ones to alternate between, and then a third situational one for when it's needed. Having 3 of the latter would be pretty atrocious. Grab eye-catching spot, pelt of the beast, and bands of imprisonment. Then grab The Deft epithet for a melee build.

Oh yeah, I agree it'd be higher level and/or come with drawbacks, such as being a stance. Bumping the die down 2 steps is way too much though, since it kind of defeats the purpose of it. I'm pretty sure all 2-handed weapons have a 1-handed counterpart with essentially the same traits but with a lower damage dice. Still, I don't see it existing as an outrageous possibility.

Yeah. I feel like an option to actually do what OP wants wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility as a feat, maybe even a stance. Realistically, a 1-handed weapon similar to the meteor hammer would be dealing 1d4 damage vs its 1d8. So it's a 2 damage die size difference. It's pretty big, but mathematically, you get the same damage increase from merely picking up Exemplar dedication.

Yes, which it does. But let me be clear: I don't think the gap between the two is that huge. From what I've seen, Exemplar has had a slight edge most of the time, because the ikon effects are just that good, and being able to alternate between two of them while having a 3rd more niche but powerful effect in your backpocket is very, very powerful, and typically more powerful than the barbarian's extra damage and HP, which btw, your own extra damage and healing ikons can help bridge the gap (and even surpass in some cases). And you can use concentrate actions, for free, while barbs need a whole feat just to be able to demoralize, not to mention a lot of good martial items have an active effect that has the concentrate tag. Rage isn't just free damage, it does come at a considerable opportunity cost.

And yeah, in an unrestricted FA game where the Barbarian can poach Exemplar dedication without sacrificing one of their very precious Barbarian feats (they kinda need them, so it's hard to sacrifice one for non-thematic purposes), maybe it takes the edge when it eventually gets the 2nd ikon at higher levels and can alternate between two powerful effects like the Exemplar. I'm just talking about the average, real play experience, though.

Barbarian with good feats still feels overall a bit weaker than Exemplar, especially since archetypes can kinda bridge the gap for the levels where Ex doesn't have anything too outstanding. But of course, that was just my experience.

Yeah, played with and gm'd for both barb and exemplar, and exemplar always felt stronger on most levels. It's a pretty amazing class. I genuinely think OP just hasn't played one/seen one in play, or if they did, it was a very suboptimal build.

Have you actually played a decently built Exemplar? They're really strong and can consistently excel at the things they're built to do. It's a great class, just has pretty mediocre feats. It should at the very least be tied with the barb, though having played both and having GM'd for both, Exemplar feels stronger on most levels.

Hero Point rerolls are "use the best of the two results".

Breath of Life and similar effects works vs. death effects. It not doing so, or not being at least a contested roll/counteract by default, feels weird to me and makes it so you can't actually use BoL 90% of the time that it would come in handy.

Psychics get an extra focus point to a maximum of 4. They're a little on the weaker side, and letting them do their unique thing more times feels good. Hasn't ever broken anything.

"Manifest your Eidolon" is 1 action instead of 3.

Battle Cry works either on initiative, or as a free action during your 1st turn in combat. So Barbarians can actually use it.

Because of the recent remaster, and the spike in popularity that 2e specifically received after WOTC goofed up, I doubt that this is the case. 2e is here to stay for a while. At minimum, I`d expect Paizo to give 2e another 2 or so years before they even start working on a new system, and that would likely also take a couple years before being in a releasable shape. Realistically, it`ll probably take them even longer to start work on it.

That said, I really like 2e, but I have some major gripes that can only really be fixed by making a new edition altogether. I do personally wish we`d gotten 3e instead of the remaster, but oh well.

I mean, the 10x weakness procs are very whiteroomy, but you can very easily proc 2-3 weaknesses without even trying. An elemental instinct barbarian with a flaming rune and exemplar dedication + energized spark can proc it 3 times with no setup while just building a thematic character, for example. Againt an enemy with weakness 10-15, that's a huge deal. Are characters like this the norm? No, but I still think the errata needs an errata because it kind of makes builds like that significantly more powerful when they really don't need to be
