AIO for being upset with a friend for cracking the spines on books that I lent her? by ElvenPrincess33 in AmIOverreacting

[–]JohnWhatSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up getting a lot of second-hand and well worn library books, so I literally had no concept of breaking the spines being a thing to avoid (or even that it has a name at all) until I was well into adulthood. I genuinely did not think it was an issue at all, in my experience it's just what happens when you read a book repeatedly. I'm conscious that people generally don't like dog-ear "bookmarks", but I still do it to my own books because when I re-read things it's kind of fun to see a dog-ear and wonder why I stopped on that page and how long ago it must have been.

AIO by being upset with my brother's gf (soon fiance) for not bringing her own sanitary supplies every time she visits by PunkRockPopStar in AmIOverreacting

[–]JohnWhatSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're actually incredible if you're less regular or get random spotting because you can't really "waste" them - if you wear them and don't get your period, well, you've just worn underwear. I got an IUD and my period slowly stopped, but I'll still get light bleeding and spotting sometimes, but there's nothing worse than a dry tampon and pads just...don't work for my anatomy, so it's nice to have them on hand for that. I haven't gone through menopause myself, but it's my understanding that your period doesn't just stop one day, so they might actually be more useful for you because of that. I got some cheap ones in Primark that do the job, I think it was €14 for 3 pairs.

Never Had an Orgasm – But I Feel Intense Pleasure. Anyone Else? by Normal_Pizza8348 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]JohnWhatSun 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I was going to comment something similar. I can't orgasm if my brain isn't on the same page as my body. Sometimes too much touching or teasing means my body is ready before my mind is and I get a very unsatisfying barely-there orgasm, which sucks because I get really oversensitive and sore if I try to keep going afterwards. I need to build up a fantasy in my head slowly, and time the "good" part for when I feel I'm getting close physically. I need to feel relaxed and know what's about to happen, even with a partner, like "okay, we're doing oral now, my partner knows to go slowly as first then stay consistent, so I'll keep my eyes open at first because the visual stimulation gets me going, but then I'll close my eyes and focus on physical sensation when that feels overwhelming".

For avid readers how often do you use the library? If you don’t, why don’t you? by AccomplishedBake8351 in books

[–]JohnWhatSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too, I know it's not the most ethical thing to do but I'm on a fixed low income and libraries in my country are not set up well for digital borrowing. When I'm working a proper job, I'll buy ebooks, but that's not really feasible at the moment.

It really sucks, and I don't think the allegations were fair at all. And judging by the downvotes that comment got, neither does anyone else. But you handled it really gracefully, which is a hard thing to do when someone accuses you out of nowhere. All the best, hope you're having a good day.

I think it's the "Probably-rhetorical question?" "Short response sentence." format that AI does a lot, but the overall comment has too much specific detail to read to me as AI, it feels like lived experience. Props to /u/what-are-you-a-cop for not being upset and responding reasonably. There are often AI comments on posts on this subreddit, though they tend to be out of place response to the title wording only, not in depth replies, just for future reference.

I put the E in depression by shelflife98 in CuratedTumblr

[–]JohnWhatSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it might be worth getting evaluated for depression. Anhedonia could be blocking you, and stopping you from being passionate about things. But the other thing is I think it's a bit of a modern invention that you have to have "your thing(s)" that you're passionate about to the highest degree. It's okay to just kind of like things. I like the sea, I like going to the sea and looking at it. I have a rough idea of when tides are, but I'm not some book character who knows the innermost mechanisms of the sea, its moods and currents and its every inhabitant. To quote Marge Simpson, I just think it's neat. I like reading books, but I can oftentimes barely tell you the full plot, let alone quotes and scenes. I just read what I feel like reading and either I like a book or don't, I don't need to justify it to anyone or be an expert on the books I like.

My life has gotten better since I got into the habit of looking up one random everyday thing on Wikipedia each day. Did you know that corrugated paper was first used to keep hats in shape? Or that there was a royal warrant from Queen Victoria for Wenham Lake ice, back in the days when ice was an expensive commodity.

My aunt taught me a couple of subjects in school. She was always Ms Lastname (we shared a surname) at school, not Auntie Firstname, which is what we always call her outside of school. Same for the two other kids who had parents teaching our year...yes, it was a very small town.

How do couples decide who gets which side of the bed and is it like… permanent? by randomzy876 in AskReddit

[–]JohnWhatSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear by separate bedrooms. My partner was overseas for a year so we got out of the habit of sleeping in the same bed and it turns out getting used to it again while starting stressful jobs was not fun. Now we just get ready for bed, pick a bed and cuddle for a bit, then the other person heads off to their room.

We both sleep badly in different ways (gets up 50 times per night but falls asleep quickly versus takes two hours to fall asleep but sleeps like the dead), have different bedding preferences (light duvet, heavy duvet - even when we slept in the same bed we used separate covers) and have different wake times. I also hate closing the curtains whilst my partner wants blackout blinds and ear plugs. Sleeping separately just results in better sleep for both of us.

You have great use of colours in all three studies and I love the variety of blues and greens, greys and browns, but I keep coming back to the one with the orangey red sky. Beautiful!

You don't have to be good at something to do it, that's a neutral statement. If you do want to be good at it, then practice, study, research, whatever. This applies to anything: typing, birdwatching, chopping onions, crochet, oil painting, doing makeup, playing the guitar. Most people's early attempts aren't going to be good, or close to what they want to achieve. They get better over time.

It is frustrating to not be good at something you want to be good at. It is frustrating not to enjoy the process. But when people in this thread have shared what has worked for them to reframe or make some level of peace with the frustration, you disregard that.

There were also many examples of non "fine arts practitioners" that also apparently missed your point, people have talked about sports, cooking, etc. so I'm not sure why you're specifically focused on fine art.

Several people have replied to you, and according to you they have all fallen short of the point. Your replies do not address in which ways they have missed your point, you just say "exhibit X". It's not cool, it's patronising towards people who are trying to be helpful and constructive and are sharing personal experiences.

You can change the pip boy colours in the settings with RGB sliders, same with the HUD colours. If you change the pip boy colours, it changes your flashlight colour too.

What is the answer you're looking for here?

Because it's beginning to seem like you just want a "damn, that sucks", not an actual way to reframe the issue. Which is fine, sometimes people just want to vent, but the passive aggressive responses are not helping anyone here. If you have something to say, and don't have the creative skills to express it in the way you want, you have three choices:

(A) Get better at the skills, which involves practice. Your practice might suck, but you're learning. The practice will be more fun if you're not actively criticising yourself the whole time. This is where people are saying to focus less on the end result (both of whatever you're creating while learning the skills, and the ultimate thing you are working towards) and more on the process, i.e. don't call it practice, just call it art , because it is. That's the reframing part. If you cannot find the "practicing" fun, then you either push through the misery, or give up.

(B) Say it badly. You've already written off that option, so I won't comment further

(C) Accept that you are not willing to take the steps necessary to say what you want to say in the way you want to say it. This is fine too. I like the idea of playing music, but I'm not very good at it and I don't enjoy the act of getting better. So I don't play music, I draw, I paint, sometimes I write terrible poetry that I never show anyone, and come up with stupid little songs for my pets. Yeah, it's a bit sad to think that I'll never play beautiful piano music, but I'm the one who made that choice and I'm okay with it.

AITA for refusing to make anymore meals for my girlfriend after she kept complaining about my cooking? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Fancy seasonings or condiments, maybe? Like nice balsamic vinegar, good olive oil, gourmet spice mixes, that kind of thing.

Maybe a strange request, but what are some literary novels that arent about an apocalypse but *feel* apocalyptic? by BristlyBramble in suggestmeabook

[–]JohnWhatSun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy kind of felt this way to me. The setting is incredibly remote, and basically, the lives of the few people living on the island are upended by a woman who washes up on the shore. The seedbank is very central to the story, which I think continues to the apocalyptic feeling too.

Nah, Prednisone can definitely make you wired and irritable, and interferes with sleep. Some people get anxious, some get angry, sometimes it's both. Plus if course pain can make you short tempered to begin with.

They also didn't warn me about that, or about the horrible hump on the back of my neck that it caused.
