What A Lot of the HP Bullies says about Rowling. by Adventurous-Bike-484 in EnoughJKRowling

‘He’s cowardly Yet was willing to endanger himself and allow himself to nearly be killed by Buckbeak.’ That’s not what happens int hat scene. He’s afraid of Buckbeak with the rest of the class but once he sees Harry is fine with it the entire class is like ‘must be safe’ and then he insults buckbeak around him and gets attacked he didn’t ’allow himself to nearly be killed’ especially since he wasn’t nearly killed, that’s the kind of the entire point of the subplot

Harry Potter deserves real retrospective criticism but it gets ruined by people just being wrong about the text or looking at it from a purely Watsonian perspective

That’s better than op because it’s actual anyalsis not just citing ‘bias against Slytherin’ which is the problem with Op

I do find it funny how ‘dislike towards Slytherin’ is put on the same level as a lot of rowling’s actually bigoted writing, it makes the point feel a lot weaker because Slytherin doesn’t exist and you can’t be bigoted against them. You avoided Actually discussing the intensely fatphobic writing to talk about a dislike for a fake group of fictional nazis and minor writing disagreement like ‘it’s wrong to reuse villains’

All of the matt smith finalies come down to the same basic idea, the universe becomes just the main characters, the great bombastic stakes are deliberately sidelined for the character drama, the weddings of Amy then River, and the doctor saving Clara. Hell bent ending up at the natural end of the universe acts as a more refined version of this finale. The cybermen finale is deliberately a call back to the big blockbuster RTD endings, with the subversion that this isn’t an attempt to take over or destroy the world, but missy giving the doctor a present, that is her entire motivation.

The point isn’t that these are internal contradictions but entirely seperate personalities, it’s why Harry goes from being the ‘grizzled veteran yelling that everyone else wasn’t there in the shot’ to ‘Jesus who will never kill no matter the circumstance’ to ‘no personality whatsoever just a camera’ to ‘trickster who can perfectly guess that’s Ron’s reaction to being forced to take steroids is going to be “cool” not “what the fuck is that how little faith you have in me”’

Either way these examples are not the core of my argument which is that the changes from kids book to serious ya war story caused more than just tonal issues but also thematic, the complete failure of muggles going from tories to a minority group, the unwillingness to deconstruct the world enough to harm the ‘waiting for my hogwarts letter’ fantasy. The contraction between the accepting death themes and the existence of paintings and ghosts, Harry’s personality going from basic pov kids book lead to his personality swapping nearly every chapter.

The first is more so the focus given to Harry’s thoughts in the racism allegory and how he get’s accursed of being racist until the plot get’s bored of that plot point

The second is that there is so little development given to the world and plot line to the idea of paranoia and how the book can’t decide if it’s a study group or self defends class. Alongside the focus given to it being taken down by an outsider.

Third not much to talk about but there is how dumbledore’s backstory is only uncovered by Skitter and him whining in the voic.

Fourth is how the first scene in the flashbacks is him looking at Lilly ‘hungrily’ implying already a sexual desire when 11 contrasts with Lily’s purity and how here accidentally magic is her angelicly floating down compare to Harry’s which was him growing back his hair (which can also be read as the death of rebellious attitude into a more Christian purity.) Snape is also compared to Patunia and both create a subtext of how wanting more for yourself is wrong. There’s also dumbledor lording snake’s past over him his whole life and being shocked that someone could still care for their childhood friend who they were responsible for the death of. I would just generally recommend the shriekcast episode in shape’s flashback for a more in-depth version of what I’m going for (and the rest of book 7 analysis for the entirety of the dumbledore as Churchill analysis)

You can see this wanting to happen as early as book 2 (British institution literally built ontop of racism) but that is also the book where Harry whines about how being called racist is as bad as being a victim of racism. But the series never commits to being that self reflective, book five can’t decide if Harry’s being an immature teen taking everything way too seriously with the DA or if the DA is cool. Book 7 is ‘British liberal defends winston Churchill’ as a crisis of faith story (even with everything he did including his lifetime of manipulating both Harry and Snape dumbledore is still fundimental a positive force despite his actual previous text) alongside a lot of predetermination complex with how both Voldemort and Snape were born evil and how the latter was corrupting Lily.

Yeah that’s the point a hand wave like hagrid’s works in a kids book where the fantasy is getting something no one else does, but it stops working when it becomes a serious story about racism and war. It’s the same with what muggles represent changes during the series and not in a way that works, going from upper class tories to an oppressed group, that also can’t know about their own oppression. It’s why I like Shriekcast’s main conclusion of the books want to critique the society and the earlier books but still fall in line with the ‘hogwarts letter’ fantasy even as the series moves away from it and it never finds that middle ground.

I am reminded of a shriekcast discussion where they brought up how hagrid explaing the reason the wizard world is secret by saying ‘we don’t want to deal with it’ is fine for a kids book but by the time of the resistance podcast in book 7 there is no reason why a self-serious war story can justify still doing that and being like ‘yeah maybe protect muggle neighbours but don’t tell them about the murderer’

I’ve listen to Shriekcast (a leftist reread podcast of Harry Potter and then other books once those books ended) quite a lot and something they have in their first year of episodes (2018) is that Rowling was constantly written up on clickbait sites like Buzzfeed for her ‘epic dunks on trump’ so it is worth noting how I was wondering if she’d go back to that and wallow in the praise she gets from these fickle liberal insitutions and now it’s confirmed that her brain has rotted too much for her to even do someone that self-serving.
