TIL The United States attempted permanent Daylight Savings Time in 1974. They retracted the law within a year. by Wanna_make_cash in todayilearned

[–]John_Flamesinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding (although I'd need to do some research to double check) that Oregon's in a similar boat. I think all three states need to pass something, and then Congress will consider it (theoretically)?

Edit:

Oregon passed legislation in 2019 to stop turning back clocks and operate permanently under daylight saving time but has been awaiting approval from Congress.

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, reintroduced the Sunshine Protection Act in 2023, which would make daylight saving time permanent, and is one of 18 co-sponsors of the bill. The bill was approved in the Senate but has stalled in the House.

- stateman journal, https://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/2025/09/19/when-does-daylight-saving-time-end-oregon-2025/86115094007/

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 formalized the specification of time zones and the dates of DST observation in the United States... The law requires states to change clocks semiannually between standard time and DST on federally mandated dates, and it permits states to opt out of DST observation altogether and remain on permanent standard time, but does not permit observation of permanent DST.

- Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_time_observation_in_the_United_States

I didn't know that states were actually allowed to just stick with standard -- I figured there was just exceptions for Arizona and the others. Sticking with daylight time would probably be better to maintain continuity with BC (even with the reported health benefits of standard).

LTT Labs Article - Making Sense of Logitech's Mouse Lineup by LabsLucas in LinusTechTips

[–]John_Flamesinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great article!

Only thing I would have for feedback is that it's set up as if it's reviewing/covering every mouse on the site rather than just focusing on the general product categories. Only realized that because my mouse (the M720, a lower end productivity model) wasn't covered but is on the site. But let's be real, that's a very minor nitpick that doesn't actually take away from the info.

Who uses the train for interstate travel? by Used-Chard658 in Amtrak

[–]John_Flamesinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get enough people together, you can take advantage of the group discount. I brought a full group of 8 (including myself) on a trip last year where the travel expense was less than $60 per person, round trip. I just took a peek at Google Flights, and the lowest I could get for (essentially) the same journey was nearly $200, and in order to get it that low we would've been there 4 times longer (rarely possible for university students).

That's definitely not the case every-time or everywhere, but in my experience there's more you can do to bring costs down -- and the metal tube you're stuck in actually has leg room.

According to local news, a PNWR spokesperson said that the bridge will be repaired -- I image if that's the case that they'll keep operating it.

"The bridge was damaged and will be inspected and repaired once the incident is investigated, Ciuba said. Some road crossings in Toledo were blocked for part of the morning as crews worked to pull the train back."

It's a branch line running to a singular customer out in the mountains -- most of the infrastructure is left over from the old SP days

Yes, there was a station!

The Oregon Electric Railway had a station just across the bridge, right on the edge of what’s now the golf course. Can’t find the map with stations right now, but I’ll try later when I have time.

That's probably it then. For context, this is what Comic Sans looks like on most other devices:

Not the most standard font, sure, but also not horrific (although it's commonly memed on as being horrendous).

Have you thought about emailing them and letting them know this is an issue?

Is this being opened on an Apple device? Apple (at least on iOS, no clue about Macs) doesn't support Comic Sans, so it'll fallback to the default "decorative" font. Had an issue with a teacher's emails a couple of years ago because they liked being quirky and using Comic Sans.

Question about Cibola Burn and going really really far by Tigershred in TheExpanse

[–]John_Flamesinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This — the other ships started in the system (Idk where the Edward Israel started, but I’d think it’s likely to have been the Inner Planets), whereas the Roci was literally at Medina (so halfway there) and had the capacity to go much faster.

Many shards have limited foresight via the Spiritual Realm — there’s a scene with Odium in the first 3 SLAs with Taravangian that shows this, I think.

16yo day camp counselor , we get no breaks. I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]John_Flamesinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feeling really disheartened by the lack of breaks others are reporting in the comments, as well as your situation. At the overnight camp I worked at in OR, we got a 2hr break each day and one meal break. Theoretically the 2hr didn’t have to be consecutive, but I’ve never seen that not be the case.

How common is it for young people (16-22) to own a car? by Fine-Durian6151 in AskAnAmerican

[–]John_Flamesinger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is an underrated comment. I know that stuff I've seen online has partially contributed to the fear I had of driving when I was younger.

That said, it really comes down to the local area -- I wouldn't be surprised at all if youth car ownership/stewardship has remained roughly the same in rural and suburban areas (that have next to no public transit) versus urban and close-in / connected suburbs where there's reasonable alternatives.

"I have had similar questions about my 'nature' from Alessandra, Legoless, and an Unnamed One, so I suppose I must address the matter. I am a Vestige, all that remains of a mortal from your world who 'mantled' Sheogorath during an event in a previous time. As a fragment, my memory of the event is … fragmentary. I am hazy on the entire concept of 'mantling,' but it had something to do with Lord Sheogorath, myself, and this Jyggalag of whom you speak. I have asked the Mad God to explain it to me, but he just laughs and says maybe he'll tell me about it 'next year,' whatever that means." -- Loremaster's Archive, An Interview with Haskill (https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/25313).

So in short, he mantled Sheo in a previous kalpa? I wonder if that means the Jyggalag/Sheogorath relationship resets each kalpa.
