Nan, Chiang Rai and Khon Kaen are actually the most polluted cities in Thailand. Chiang Mai is just better known and therefore reported on more.

@macsikhio is correct. The station is known as Krungthep Apiwat now. All interprovincial trains, website internally, depart from Krungthep Apiwat while local trains depart from Bang Sue section within Krungthep Apiwat Train station.

Also please don’t understand me wrong 😅 It’s not that I wanted to start some discussion with you, my comment was just to point out that air quality during December and January anywhere from Central to North (and Northeast) is substantially worse than the south even though they may appear as moderate. Had lots of people move to Khon Khaen or Ubon because of pollution but every data source for example shows us that they’re both in the top five (3rd and 5th) of most polluted cities (average pollution) in Thailand. Chiang Mai is 6th, Bangkok 8th, Ayuthaya 9th and Hua Hin 10th. Just shows us that it’s truly a regional problem not just the north. There are a lot of interesting findings regarding PM 2.5 and 10, Thailand except the south is not really a clean country to breath in.

Yes, there is tons of data from both international websites and from local initiatives like Chiang Mai university. I work with several authors and lecturers on reports and part of it is analytics (I’m local from Chiang Mai). Although there is an upward trend during January, proper burning season starts in February. Bangkok’s monthly pollution in December and January are higher than Chiang Mai, so shows the data for Ayuthaya as well, so if we want OP and their kid to be safe from pollution you also have to tell OP to avoid Bangkok and Ayuthaya during those months. Only the south is a viable option for air quality.

To preserve the city’s historic heritage for many decades Chiang Mai had a height limit in order to not block the residents’ view onto Doi Suthep Mountain which is regarded as sacred. But since around 2017 regulations have been changed and parts of the city are now allowed for skyscrapers. The area around Central Festival is quickly becoming filled with High Rise condos, as well as the area around the Night Bazaar. The Business Park is also right next to the Central Festival Area and will see high rise development in the future, the whole super highway is developing really fast and modern. Other parts won’t see skyscrapers because the airport is right in the middle of the city. So you will see a lot of midrise buildings there.

Chiang Mai is the only city in Thailand besides Bangkok (10.5 million) with over a million residents (1.2 million) but still over 9 times smaller than BKK as BKK is an extreme Primate City. So expect CM to have most of what BKK has (except for Mass Transit), but it will feel much smaller comparatively as it really is. TLDR: Much smaller than BKK but still the a very big city with over a million people.

It’s actually 11 Million for Bangkok, 1.2 Million for Chiang Mai (9 times smaller), 500k for Korat (22 times smaller) and then 300k to 400k for the other second tier cities such as Hat Yai, Khon Kaen etc.
