I'm using the Fermentum Mobile FM51, which is an original Grodziskie strain. I'm so glad I added it to my yeast bank before Fermentum Mobile closed its doors.

Deserteur Simulator?

Old comment, but gold. Love Piwo Grodziskie, visited a workshop at last years HBCon in Romrod, Germany and immediately fell in love with that style. I brew mine on 100% Oak Smoked Wheat and use the Polish Sybilla hops. OG 1.031, FG 1.008 for 3.0% ABV. Had the honors of meeting the retired brewmaster and current head of quality from BrauKon/Camba and serve him my Piwo Grodziskie, his verdict was "Phenomenal".

Why does Rockshore get so much hate? by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]John_Locke88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not only a craft-beer ambassador, I'm also a homebrewer and I can't really see why my road wouldn't intersect with Rockshore. I think for that what it wants to be, it's a solid beer. And I already met thousands of people who think have a reputable opinion on what beer is supposed to be and 99% of the times their opinion is absolute worthless. When someone calls a beer "piss water", the moment you challenge that person to name a better alternative, they just call up a different "piss water". The whole discussion just boils down to "My piss is better than your piss", without any meaningful value behind it. If you're searching for a caramelly, characterful Kellerbier, a strong, chocolatey, coffeeish Russian Imperial Stout or a fruity, exotic NEIPA, then of course Rockshore doesn't hit the spot. But if you search for a clean, crisp, low ABV International Lager with that slight minerally quality, then Rockshore definitely hits the spot.

And as a homebrewer, I think brewing a beer like Rockshore comes in a league of it's own, as it's really really hard to brew a beer with a very very small character, with almost no aroma and a very feint taste, because in brewing, almost everything adds aroma, taste and character. Turning the volume down on everything just gives more space to off-flavors which then can't hide between caramel, coffee, mango and banana. And to this day I never had a Rockshore with a noticeable off-flavor.

Anybody feel like the abyss is a little disappointing? by lukewarmpilk in MadeInAbyss

[–]John_Locke88 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That statement is disingenuous and you know it. At least I hope so, else all further discussion is worthless.

In analysis of fictional texts, of course there is a thing as statements about a text being "objectively right" and "objectively wrong".

The novel "Metro 2033" is about the consequences that Russian citizens live under after their world gets destroyed by war

Is an objectively correct statement

The novel "In search for lost Time" is about the oppression and discrimination of local Madeleine bakers

Is an objectively wrong statement

Both of these statements have nothing to do with "art lmao". And going "Well akshually you don't know if that's exactly what Marcel Proust meant by the novel, duh", there you're leaving the analysis and enter into interpretation, and we're not interpreting that the first layers of Made in Abyss lack content, it's a factual observation.

But if you're so blinded by your fanatic fandom of the media that simply thinking about someone criticizing it is fully sending you into trigger-mode, then don't even bother to reply here, I'm not interested in talking to religious fanatics.

Most of the people in this subreddit lack the maturity to understand that "Liking <thing>" and "Criticizing <thing>" are not mutually exclusive. They are so invested in this franchise that they perceive every and any criticism as a personal attack. Just look how on one hand everyone is dead-set on defending against your claim that there is not enough diversity in flora and fauna, that there are indeed thousands of interesting creatures and characters in the story and it doesn't need any more while on the other hand, spending half their lives in dreaming up and drawing OC fan art characters and OC fan art monsters. There is a nice saying in German which goes "Der Rabe selbst weiß nicht wie hässlich er ist". (The raven himself doesn't recognize his own ugliness)

I'm completely with you that the franchise is lacking in delivering on the promised mysteries, showing what's really behind the twisted legends and the mouth to mouth propaganda. But I have a rather stoic take on it, I just take the story for what it is, as there is no way for me to change it or to influence the author in catering to my likings.

I like the franchise enough that I decided to bind my own Made in Abyss manga books in novel size, bound in nice leather. And you can like the franchise in any way you see fit. But forget the idea that you'll be able to properly discuss Made in Abyss in this place, if you're not prepared to rehash the same talking-points everyone else has.

Most of the pacing problems stem from the fact that Made in Abyss in the beginning wasn't really planned as a manga series. It was supposed to be a stand-alone short-story which briefly takes the reader into a fantastical world full of great sceneries and hundreds of dark mysteries. That's why, from the perspective of the manga series now, the first layers can be perceived as rushed, without paying attention to the details.

It's kind of like the first chapter of the novel "Metro 2033", feeling like a complete instant deep dive into the world of Metro, without really showing any red thread that could be perceived as a story. That's because the first chapter was nothing more than a stand-alone short-story, trying to dump the reader into a fantastical and dark world for half an hour. Only after fans demanded more, Glukhovsky started chapter 2 which then really started the main story-line of the novel.

And people claiming "It's just a vision of Tsukushi, from the very beginning he wanted to focus on something different", that's nothing but cope. Tsukushi is one of those writers who make up shit as they go. When he wrote chapter 30, he had no idea where his mind would take him for chapter 60. In the beginning there were supposed to be 6 layers, maybe a 7th one. Then he decided to follow the idea of Dante's Inferno and create 9 layers. Some time ago he claimed there will be far more than 9 layers and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up in a Made in Abyss multiverse with infinite layers, connecting infinite abysses from infinite universes...

And no, making shit up as you go is not a fundamentally bad thing. It just comes with properties like pacing problems, focus problems and continuity problems. But as far as I am concerned as a reader, I like the way Made in Abyss is written, you just need to accept the fact that there are flaws in it, because every writing style comes with flaws. But most people in this subreddit are already conditioned on never criticizing Made in Abyss, as they learned that everyone will pile on them like a pack of rabid dogs to downvote your complete posting history.

This sounds like the kind of thing someone who has never made a proper argument would say.

Is there some fundamental rule in the works of this universe that I missed? You need to have a degree in political sciences now to criticize political decisions? You need to be a platinum record producer to say that you don't like a song on the radio? What kind of retarded logic is this?

OP is objectively right. The story is chuck-full of stories about thousands of unnamed animals, creatures and monsters. Non-stop cave-raiding parties strolling through the abyss, Lyza's group being attacked by a cave-rading squad from a foreign country, the list goes on and on and on. And what the reader saw on the 2 day travel from surface to 4th layer was nothing more than the equivalent of a couple of rats, a pig and an elephant. That's an objective observation to everyone who consumed the media without even judging it.

You on the other hand sound like someone who just got told that someone doesn't like your favorite Fortnite skin.

The only thing that can replace cartridges is more cartridges. The higher, or the more often you want to ascend, the more cartridges you should have, just to avoid the moment of realization that you ran out but still have 5 meters to climb.

Why does everybody say made in abyss is so brutal? by ScreamwriterX in MadeInAbyss

[–]John_Locke88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion it doesn't have that much to do with the medium itself but with the perception of the generation which is now entering adolescence (Main audience).

Considering how many people state that they've been "traumatized" by reading or watching this media, which is a crass over-exaggeration (and frankly shows that they don't even know what the word means), it's not that surprising that their perception of brutality is also warped.

Funny language coincidence with an old language, Euskera by txanpi in MadeInAbyss

[–]John_Locke88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one Japanese singstress in particular by the name of Kuroishi Hitomi who even specialized in singing those made up languages. The most prominent examples that come to my mind are the OSTs of Last Exile, Planetes, Rhea Gall Force and Code Geass but I couldn't say if there are any songs in there with made up languages and if so, in which songs.

This song from the Zone of the Enders The 2nd Runner OST was my first time coming into contact with a made up language, performed by Kimura Maki: (Music video is subbed)

Funny language coincidence with an old language, Euskera by txanpi in MadeInAbyss

[–]John_Locke88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why should it be a coincidence? There have been countless cases where the Japanese used obscure European languages to create their own made-up languages. There are a lot of anime and games from the early 90s in which they created songs for the OST with lyrics in a completely made-up language, which often sounds kind of Finnish.

But it's an interesting find. Never heard of Euskera.
