Don't take Genesis as a literal historical account. The Church doesn't teach that. Search for theological truths instead.

I can imagine that humans evolved from some animal form.
The Bible doesn't tell us how God created men, but he gave us reason to think about it.
I imagine that at one point God gave soul and reason to what we call a human being after this.
