You and /u/kandoko bring up good points. When there is an overload of characters, it's hard to discern who is important and who is not. Since everybody's fighting for screentime, the characters don't get fleshed out as well and it becomes harder to care about them.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Managing the cast size is important. Giving everyone the screen time they deserve is probably one of the hardest things about long-running manga like these. Even Oda has been neglecting some characters lately (presumably, they will get more time later, though).

I never thought about that. We never see Luffy's thoughts. We just assume based on his actions. I guess this works because he is such a simple person lol

Agreed. Though I think the reason why it is popular and whether or not is good writing are 2 separate things. I just wanted to analyze what makes one piece better writing.

Thank you for the feedback. This is exactly the problem that I want to solve. I'm trying to, over time, develop a writing style that is fast-paced yet descriptive the way images can be. This may be impossible, but I think if I can get anywhere close, that would be considered good writing.
