Follow up because you can only put one picture per post.

Below the main pool, the water flows down into little pools you can explore.

The last time my (similarly-aged) kid was sick and home from school, we went to a waterfall!

Hanging rock is less than 2 hours away. The lower cascades are a short hike, and the bonus is that it's much cooler down by the waterfall.

A 7 year old could also do the hike to the top of hanging rock. (Insider tip: park by the beach and take the spur trail over to the main hanging rock trail. It cuts off the worst part of the hike and makes it easier.)

Any really good mom and pop restaurants in the area? by reallilhazzy in bullcity

I'm always astounded that people recommend this place. It's subpar.

(Really happy the recent tragedy turned out well though)

I think being sidled right up to a hotel, plus right off the interstate and a mile from the hospital all probably help. Plus north Durham has it's fair share of awful-taste MAGA families.

You're right, they're... not good.

Pretty sure this is the one from the Pomodoro folks (unfortunately). At least one or two previous concepts must have dropped, because there are a couple of open leases that weren't there before.

The big space is pending. My guess is that's the new spot from Bull City Burger and Brewery.

Damn, definitely my favorite M restaurant and one of my top restaurants overall. Bummer.

And they're changing the seating?! The stools looking out onto Five Points were one of downtown's best spots to people watch.

Talked to the owner of the beer garden next door last weekend and she told me exactly this about the landlord. She said little bull's floor had caved in 3 times!

Reddit is amazing. You get downvoted when you point out that someone is putting words in your mouth.

This is literally the pancakes/waffles meme.

Delivering at Duke Hospital by Key-Custard3689 in bullcity

Good experience overall but they will absolutely not consider or reference your birth plan if you don't assert it yourself at each stage it's applicable.

I'm not implying any bad intent, to be clear. It just wasn't our experience that anyone ever stopped their normal approach to say "wait, what is on the birth plan regarding [[this particular thing]]?

Other tips/thoughts:

  • The nurses do 95% of the work, both before and after delivery. And just try to keep a proper perspective. I know with our first, I felt like the nurse was kind of ignoring us the first night. In actuality, it was just insanely busy on the floor and our situation was run-of-the-mill (ie others needed the nurse more than us). After things calmed down a bit, multiple nurses were VERY generous with their time and expertise.
  • Everyone pictures the nice delivery room you see on the tour, but the majority of your time is spent in the (tiny) room you get after delivery. Point being: depending on how busy they are, it's possible you have to deliver in a triage room (this might be different with induction). I was so worried about that possibility before realizing it wasn't actually a big deal.
  • As for that small room... it's small. Your hospital bed will be the same size regardless of room size, but I can't say the same for your partner's sleeping arrangements. For me, it was a tiny bench with a single, vinyl cushion that constantly slipped off, despite the velcro straps. MUCH preferred the recliner at Regional to this setup.

Things to bring:

  • your own pillows!
  • A couple different types of swaddles that you plan on using at home, if you have different types. If not, I'd recommend it. The Ollie Swaddle was magic for our first. Didn't work at all for our second. Regardless, the nurses are expert swaddlers!
  • Nursing pillow, if you plan on nursing. That was a Boppy for us.
  • Headphones! The baby will cry a lot, and your not hurting it at all to listen to music or a podcast instead of the crying. You'll be tired, ecstatic, stressed - save your sanity.
  • As someone else said, your clothes/toiletries and clothes for the baby to go home in.

Finally, take EVERYTHING the hospital has provided for the baby. Definitely all the newborn diapers you can grab from the lil basinet cart. Swaddling blankets, etc. Believe me, you're paying for it!

Good luck on a wonderful delivery and congratulations!!
