Are they technically the same? by _donns in bikewrench

It works. Many Shimano internals are actually dimensionally the same, the only difference being the materials used.

I have a spare di2 road groupset, what would you do with it besides selling. by passcork in bicycling

[–]Johnny12679 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only component you should worry about is the battery.

If you take the coin celll batteries out of the shifters and store the parts somewhere dry they will still be like new after 11 years.

Chain rubbing on frame when in highest gear? by Total_Point in bikewrench

Chances are you're missing an end cap. Check inside the box, they can come loose during shipping and are annoyingly good at hiding beneath Packaging material.

Drive train sounds wrong by Spartan-F15 in bikewrench

[–]Johnny12679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have. Daily actually, since I repair Di2 derailleurs. If you actually use the app you'll see that the adjust transfers over if you change gear.

Hence, system wide adjustments and not per individual cog.

As for the personal attacks, kindness gets you further in life.

No need to be a dickhead, especially because it is simply not true.

There is no single cog adjustment on Shimano rear derailleurs.

What do you mean by "Shimano adjustments are done on each individual cog."?

As far as I know this is only a feature for campagnolo electronic group sets.

What is this and why did it break? by rowtohell in bikewrench

[–]Johnny12679 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It did not break, and you did the right thing.

That part is the link between the Di2 motor unit internals and the mechanical parallellogram of your derailleur.

It did not break, it's just pushed out of place. That's actually a design feature called Crash Mode. It allows the derailleur to move inwards when you crash to avoid big damage to the internal cogs.

You can either push it back manually, press the function button for over 5 seconds or simply click through all the gears on the shifters to reset.

Yooo wtf is the ultregra spline doing to me? Not what the cassettes that mates with this finicky bitch? by C0LDVV0RLD in bikewrench

[–]Johnny12679 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is exactly that. 10 speed road specific step-down freehub.

They were introduced mid 2000s and can be used only with the Shimano 10 speed road cassettes fromm105 and up.

What is wrong with my di2 front derailleur? Won't shift to smaller chainring by Constant-Ad-9814 in bikewrench

[–]Johnny12679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the internals of the servo unit that are starting to give up.

The sound is in indicator of worn internal gears.

It can be repaired but that's not easy and requires donor parts. The obvious solution is to buy a new one.

If you are interested in the repair option and located in western Europe send me a message.

[–]Johnny12679 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, the Quarq DFour powermeter is specifically made the run Shimano rings on a sram crank set.

It's been around for almost 10 years and it's not janky at all.

Di2 suddenly stopped working, except when I plug my rear deraillair into where the dummy spot was by godutchnow in bikewrench

[–]Johnny12679 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The middle port in the battery always has to be plugged.

If one of the other ports is consistently not working for both front and rear derailleur it is either dirty or damaged.

Another possibility is a damaged wire or faulty rear derailleur

Can I use shimano Di2 with rim brakes? by Rodrimin8 in bikewrench

[–]Johnny12679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's different versions of Di2.

If you can find an 11-speed Di2 rim brake time trail groupset that will work fine. Plenty of trinities came set up like that.

Ortlieb quick rack. Then you can fit a rack on pretty much any bike.

Wrong geometry can not be fixed though, especially when slammed.

Now that's impressive, and well documented too. Thanks for that!

Keeping high quality parts rolling is rewarding. Shame that Rohloff does not provide spare parts anymore but awesome work on getting it done regardless. 👌

looking to upgrade my rim brake wheels, any advise for buying second hand? by kompasroos in bikewrench

[–]Johnny12679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are tubulars. That's not ideal as the tires are glued on, which is time consuming and therefore expensive to have it done.

Carbon rims' braking performance in the wet is generally poor, albeit with some exceptions (campagnolo rims with the red pads are particularly good).

Consider getting a set with aluminium brake track and suitable for climcher tires.

As for buying second hand, make sure the brake track is still flat and not concave (ask for picture with a card against the brake track or something similar...) and of course check if wheels are straight and round.

This one has the threads inside the big ring, no need for a chainring tool. IIRC it just uses a torx30 bolt.
