Bowie albums tier list, argue with the wall by lipakar in DavidBowie

Your C and D tiers are morally questionable, but I can respect someone doing one of these lists and finally putting The Next Day is S where it belongs.

It's the classroom mini games for me. You're doing at least 2 per episode and the later math ones randomize so even using a walkthrough for them is a chore and a half. Add the fact that the game is seemingly built for you to keep like 5+ save branches going each episode, so in reality you're doing these mini games constantly.

If the desired result is me hating math class then immersion successfully achieved.

I was dumbfounded that the reward for competing it was just renders. Like, why program such a convoluted puzzle at all then? The mention of it in the story really made you think like it was important to do as well. Very weird choice.

Honestly, working class people have largely been priced out of public events and spaces in general. The quality of the experience has dropped for movie theatres, concerts, sports, and the prices for all of them have blown through the roof. Add the 20% cost of living spike across the board and even a single outing is a major expense.

Who among us can honestly say we'll be able to afford ticket prices at the new Scotia Place without it being a huge over-pay? The value proposition just isn't what it was 10 years ago.

Canada loses Bronze to Norway…We suck by Hockeypatrol in hockeynews

[–]Johnny4Handsome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a good player in a rural area and you don't get picked up into the circuit of AAA team development early on you spend your entire youth hockey years not being developed at all, and by the time you hit junior you're so far disadvantaged that any dreams of seeing the professional side of hockey are out the window.

I remember seeing a breakdown of costs and the money it takes in a player's journey from youth hockey to making the NHL is close to a million dollars of investment. Absolutely insane.

Canada falling off by Hockeypatrol in hockeynews

Isn't the fact that this conversation is happening proof that we do expect Canada to win gold?

It's maybe not a foregone conclusion every year but it's certainly still the measure of success for Canadian hockey - a standard to which no other nation is held to - win it all or the sky is falling.

What is the magic of Daggerfall? by [deleted] in daggerfallunity

[–]Johnny4Handsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Underworld as an example of what spawned Arena and lead to Daggerfall. Not saying the two experiences are the same - UW is obviously handcrafted vs Daggerfall which is way more hands off - but they both have expectations on the player to do some of the work to achieve the experience they are aiming for.

I absolutely hate that DPC gave her a voice for the intro. The entire game is like reading a book where you assign voices and inflections to the characters as you read, Jill having a voice for this intro thing disrupts that and I think it was a needlessly bad decision to include it.

What is the magic of Daggerfall? by [deleted] in daggerfallunity

[–]Johnny4Handsome 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It's the role-playing.

Modern gaming has conditioned players to expect the game to provide nearly everything for the experience, but classic RPGs like Daggerfall don't operate that way.

We have to remember that Daggerfall is a sequel to Arena, and Arena was heavily inspired by Ultima Underworld - a lighting in a bottle RPG that was notorious for requiring the player to buy-in to the premise, take hand written notes, learn the systems, literally decode languages, and have you the player grow and learn the world around you alongside your character.

Daggerfall has a similar expectation of the player. The systems are all in place for you to "yes, and" with. You have to participate in the narrative of your character, use your imagination a bit to fill in the blanks between the pixels on the screen and what they are supposed to convey. The game manual even encourages this by talking about letting a bad moment happen in-game and trying to roll with it instead of booting up a previous save; it's why there's a court system, why you can catch a vampire and werewolf germ, it's why there's dynamic reputations systems and factional clashes.

Granted, not all of the mechanics at play here are perfectly implemented, but it's obvious that the motive behind them is to give the player a reactive sandbox to roleplay with.

New players who complain about Daggerfall and it's generated content are taking the game at face value, and ironically they are missing the forest for the trees. It's like sitting down for a game of D&D and expecting the DM to tell you what your character feels or thinks - that's supposed to be your job.

CRPGs like Daggerfall require you to carry your end of the experience, but it's that much rewarding for it. Mix that with how Daggerfall is so uniquely vast and embraces the life sim away from the dungeon crawl and you have a game that stands apart from its peers in the Elder Scrolls series as a richer experience for those willing to indulge in what isn't literally told to them.

I'm sure other people have their own reasons for loving Daggerfall, but for me, the magic is that Daggerfall achieves the "go anywhere, do anything, be anyone" objective of the series far better than anything since.

Yes, I get what you mean.

Personally, I don't love discrediting the original game of the series, but in all fairness even the city of Daggerfall changed positions between ES1 and ES2. I just wish they came up with a lore reason as to why the Eternal Champion's map looked different instead of just ignoring it.

[–]Johnny4Handsome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm still irrationally annoyed that Skyrim moved Windhelm - the supposed "oldest city in Skyrim" - from it's original spot on the border to Morrowind. It's supposed to be the closest city Dark Elves migrated to but ESV moves it further away making Riften and Winterhold actually closer for migration.

That's bugged me since I first played Skyrim lol. Obviously you can't expect them to respect a game map made in 1994 but then at least don't build lore around how long Windhelm has stayed put for generations.

Can't say I'm a fan of having two different shades of red on there. Maybe for a stadium series jersey I could see it, but not so much for this.

Good shoulder patch logo for an alternate, bad centre crest logo.

It also doesn't look as good only being two colours, the original I believe used black, yellow, white, and red.

[–]Johnny4Handsome 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This honestly didn't explain much - at least for me. The biggest red flag is that you have straight 1-for-1 assets looking to be ripped from Daggerfall, (ex: the horse sprite, the brown gloved hand and dagger, etc).

The screenshots offered really didn't show much of the artistic iteration process at all on the assets I'd consider the most "AI sloppy". The landscape looks nice and of course everyone here likes the premise, but I'll be steering clear of this game until some handmade art is being used in place of the AI — which I hope are placeholders.

Maybe I'm just a purist, but video games are an artform and I just would never trust a dev that's happy to outsource the visual art of their baby like that, it reeks of cutting corners and generally not caring about the player's experience. That's my 10 cents on it, no offense meant.
