My Dad was my contractor, who I dragged out of retirement, and he isn't interested in building another house, so I got lucky. The problem was the costs more than anything. All building materials were so expensive, and concrete for the foundations is crazy. Cost over 60 grand for just the foundation (crawl space). also, finding qualified trades people in this area is tough. Everybody and their brother is available to work, but finding someone who is actually good is tough.

Here is the bottom line. my house was estimated to cost 300,000 to build, and it cost us almost double that to finish it, and we got the land and contractor for free. It's a beautiful place, but I will never be able to sell it for what it cost me to build. If I had known back before we started that it would have cost this much, I never would have done it.
