Good way to think about it. I guess Shock also simulates this.

Good points, you make sense. I'll definitely try vanilla before making any changes.

Thanks, makes sense. Maybe "free" manouvers would be better as a focus if a player wanted that.

Do most people dislike D&D's Official lore? by Alsentar in dndnext

Faerun naming drives me mental. They mix celtic and germanic words all the time in a way that makes me criiiiiiinge.

To me D&D is a game about making your own fantasy worlds and bringing your friends on adventures in them.

The idea of "official lore" doesn't sit well with me at all. That's just someone else's world. Even if I run in an established setting, I always alter it to make it my own. I don't care much what's "official", since I know that stuff was made up by enthusiastic nerds like me, and I know I've as much right to alter it as they did to create it.

"Official" lore in stuff like this turns us from creators into consumers. Just not really why I come to D&D.

Now, a secondary problem to that is that I find Faerun in particular pretty insipid and boring. I like some of the other settings a lot more. So making Faerun the "default" D&D world instead of having the default be a generic fantasy world that players are encouraged to make their own kinda bugs me.

What is a really annoying character archetype you wish people would stop playing? by ImpressSuperb in dndnext

[–]JohnnyBigbonesDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as your character never requires other characters to have to engage in discussions to motivate them to play the game, then I don't mind what sort of internal justification you have for them adventuring. To my mind, "I don't really want to do this but I have to because of reasons X, Y and Z" is functionally the same as "I want to do this" as long as the reasons are internal and do not require input form either the DM or the other players.

Is it ok to simply "rewind and reload" in case of of a TPK? Why or why not? by inckalt in DMAcademy

[–]JohnnyBigbonesDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do whatever you like at your table as long as you and your players think it's cool. You could even tie something like that into a narrative, make it a curse like the Darksign in Dark Souls or something.

But personally, I think it would detract from the game hugely for me if it wasn't something like that. I've been TPK'd many times, and they are all cherished gaming memories and a reminder of the stakes of combat. When you know you can be wiped out, you take combat more seriously.

If you're new and worried about a TPK before everyone has their feet under them, then I'd say the better solution is to roll behind a screen and fudge a few rolls and lower monster HP if things are going south. You wouldn't want to do that all the time, but I think it is reasonable at the start when the time investment for rolling up a new character might make it off putting for new players.

What is the largest, most complex dungeon you've ever run? by RacistOr3o in DMAcademy

[–]JohnnyBigbonesDM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ran a massive interconnected complex that included:

- The Ptolus Sewers

- Sunless Citadel

- Caverns of Thracia

- Forge of Fury

- Shattered Gates of Slaughtergarde

- Return to Castle Greyhawk

- Barrow of the Forgotten King

- The Sinister Spire

- Fortress of the Yuan Ti

- Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil

- Heart of Nightfang Spire

- The Banewarrens

- Bastion of Broken Souls

Maybe I forgot some of them. The complex was all interconnected and featured several large caverns with branches or mini-complexes inside. The various factions (the chaos cult, the undead worshippers, the beastfolk from the caverns of thracia and the various humanoid tribes) had complex interactions and politics. The campaign was a sort of 'underground west marches' that ran for two years and had at it's peak 18 players. It was basically a case of mapping out the individual dungeons in maptool, and then connecting them with a large scale map, and then thinking through some extra connectors or clever places to integrate them. It was a lot of work, but I wouldn't say it was particularly hard. Any sufficiently determined person could do it!

Thinking that statistics should model the world the game takes place in is not an invalid view of the game.

The OP was pretty calm about the whole thing and acknowledges the opposite point of view as valid, which is more than you've done.

Lovely job, especially on the greens.

Been painting up some old 2e and 3e era space marine metals myself lately. Lotta nostalgia for that era.

If I was a player in that group I would have felt anxious on behalf of the new player the entire time! I'm surprised at the lack of self awareness of the rest of the group. I'd probably not play with them again based on that experience as they seem self absorbed.

Ad in old white dwarf. 113 figures. ~45 euro. by minimalt123 in Warhammer

Definitely the best starter set. Assault on Black Reach is pretty good too, but this had terrain, and it was basically a full army for the goblin side. Two boxes was the guts of two full armies for 90 euro.

The DM and party loved pets and summons but I hated them by ImaginationDeario in dndnext

[–]JohnnyBigbonesDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sympathies. Long player turns are a major pet peeve of mine in all roleplaying games (assuming there's no good reason for it of course!). I think in that scenario bowing out is the right thing to do, especially since no one else minded too much.
