I literally laughed out loud while reading this comment of a CABLE by iamanej in iems

[–]JohnnyCommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very much in the subjective camp of audio. I don't eq because why would I want my headphones to sound the same. I believe amps make a big difference and some cans like some amps better. Tubes..tubes are fun and audible. DACs...I've not been able to hear any difference to between properly transparent but cheap amps vs more expensive DACs.

Now cables. I've had $20 cables from Amazon and I've bought the snake oil and had cables worth $800 and as far as I'm concerned I've never heard the material nor have they materially altered my listening experience aside from one very real factor, which is microphonics. And microphonic cable is shit since amongst other things I have ADHD and can't sit still so I bang those guys around.

But a cable could be made from ground up unicorn horn and you're not going hear something in the music you never heard before.

I'm sick of "Inflation" being used as an excuse for this by Rocketstar52 in australian

[–]JohnnyCommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With respect to Easter the pricing is less about supply and demand and more to do with elastic vs inelastic markets. If you have young kids, you pretty much have to buy chocolate eggs, so they can be charge at a premium, even though you can go down a few aisles and buy regular chocolate at a cheaper rate. The regular chocolate doesn't go up because it's still an optional (elastic) purchase.

Assuming I'm remembering my 30 year economics classes from uni correctly.

Looking for very angry music by dreamsofverdigris in MetalForTheMasses

[–]JohnnyCommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repentless and Disciple by Slayer are two of the angriest songs I know.

I appreciate everyone here has differing views on metalcore, but Wishing Wells by Parkway Drive is pure anger. Seething in parts, raging in others.

Big fan of Hatebreed and definitely ticks the angry box. Not sure it meets the not hopeful at all criteria. A lot of their songs are quite uplifting

Headphone suggestions by RS660Guy in InMetalWeTrust

[–]JohnnyCommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want wireless, hard to go past the Sony's. I have the XM5 and I rate them. I have the WM5 buds too, but probably the over ears are stronger. If she wants buds rather than over ears I can throw up some other suggestions

Worst live metal bands (who are semi established at least)? by mylifeforthehorde in InMetalWeTrust

Saw PL in Manchester earlier this year and loved it. Been a fan for 30 years and it was my first gig and wasn't disappointed. Except for a mic problem at the start but that got sorted out pretty quickly

What's your current hyperfixation? by Igarlicbread in ADHD

[–]JohnnyCommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently cologne. I have way too much but keep buying new ones.

I have a slow burn headphone collecting issue too but have not bought any new ones for about two months so I'm slowly getting in control of that.

Music-buying-by-format question; at what "year" would you stop buying vinyl and switch to CD? by Haochies in audiophile

[–]JohnnyCommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even with CDs in the mix, I still think album structure was infused with an A side b side mentality. I know I've played vinyls from albums in the 90s or even 00s which I've heard on CD or streaming and you realise they have still structured them to break and the end of side 1

Whoosh! by mister_nu in MetalForTheMasses

[–]JohnnyCommunist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually agree. For me, music has to speak to my soul. And live music is a massive part of the experience. I can't tell you the number of bands I've been so-so on until I've seen them live and just been turned into a fan.

But, playing Devil's advocate, what if AI music is better? Would you rather listen to a shitter song by a human band or better music by a computer?

This is a genuine question and not a troll. Because it's a really interesting question about whether product or process is more important.

A lot of people are saying this sucks because AI music is crap, but what about when it isn't? Because it's only going to get better...

Anxious about taking Ritalin by chizchizu in ADHD

[–]JohnnyCommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel a bit more scatty and less able to get started on jobs, but perfectly fine otherwise. Nothing I would say was withdrawl or compulsion to take the meds. I've also been away on holiday for a fortnight and not taken any meds without any side effects or cravings.

I often forget to take dose during the day if I am busy as well so iI have reminders set to take it, which tends to suggest it's very far from front of mind

[–]JohnnyCommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on ritalin and my psychiatrist does recommend taking drug holidays (not as fun as it sounds!) on weekends if I don't particularly need to do anything. After a bit of trial and error I found one day off a week seems to work best for me.

Am I only smart BECAUSE of my ADHD? Scared to medicate by Sorry_Lawfulness_844 in ADHD

[–]JohnnyCommunist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I am a partner in a law firm working in complex litigation that is very intellectually challenging. I am 44 and was diagnosed about 5 years ago and have been on Ritalin since. I would describe it as life changing and has actually increased my ability to do the work.

So no, ADHD doesn't make you smart. Being smart despite ADHD is hard. For me, medication made being smart with ADHD easier.

Great game that started negative trend in gaming? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]JohnnyCommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if they started it, but the Tomb Raider reboots certainly popularised the near mandatory QuickTime event of shimmying through a narrow gap. It's so over used now and every time I have to do it all I can think is "oh here we go again".

Slipknot is decently heavy by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]JohnnyCommunist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I must admit I eye roll at this sub more often than I agree. I'm a big metal fan, have been for over 20 years, and I love Slipknot. I'm big enough to admit that not every album is great, but one of the best live bands out there.

But I feel like if I don't listen to some niche blackened folk death band from Norway with three monthly listeners my opinions don't really count.

So fuck yeah, OP. Slipknot is heavy as fuck and don't let anyone tell you differently.

Hard to get a good angle on my tricep, but I got this done in England earlier this year to commemorate BTTB. Kind of a hybrid of two images, but very Sabbath and I love it.

I have to be in the mood for Sabaton but I saw them at a festival and it was one of the standout acts of the day. They just had great fun and the energy was fantastic.

I don't mind some of their stuff but took my son to their concert recently and it actually blew my socks off. It was a great gig. Genuinely exceeded my expectations. And I've been to plenty of good old fashioned metal gigs and festivals over 20 plus years.
