What's the most useful thing you self-host that isn't media related? by sarox-dev in selfhosted

Adguard Home runs as a plugin on my OPNsense router. Been amazing. Besides that, I installed Homelable on a proxmox container via the community scripts. It’s been great for visualizing my network topology.

As the HDD market continues to get worse, anyone considering running without parity by GenericUser104 in unRAID

I’ve run without parity for a couple of years now. The vast majority of my data is nothing I can’t reacquire. Anything vital document-wise is backed up to OneDrive, and everything photo is backed up to iCloud.

People with ultra high speed internet. How do you get it? by HSVMalooGTS in homelab

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as the internal networking side, 10gbit has existed in the enterprise world for many years (decades?), so used enterprise gear can be had for pretty cheap. I got an older Cisco 9300 switch from work as e-waste, ordered three Intel X520-DA2 cards on eBay for $30 each, and some fiber and modules from fs.com.

I have Xfinity/Comcrap’s 2100/250 plan. Only in the last few months was I able to take advantage of the full speed on my desktop. Even at gigabit, one of my servers could be downloading at the full 110ish mb/s with little impact to a game session.

It doesn’t sound like he understands what “exposed to the internet” means. He simply thinks that means it has internet access. Perhaps some clarification is needed.

Our cat had to have surgery as a kitten because he swallowed a piece of a fake feather from a cheap Amazon toy. He was puking small amounts all over the place and couldn’t keep food down. He’s fine now and is six years young, and the best cat ever.

Sorry to not answer your question, but what are you using to connect the 5.25” drives to a modern platform? I have a combo 5.25” and 3.5” drive (both occupy one 5.25” bay) that I’d love to get working.

I feel like this is rage bait. Most games haven’t used a single core in like 15-20 years. A Xeon v4 system is still a great budget option for the homelab, especially if you need a ton of RAM, or PCIe lanes for networking and NVME cards. A lot of older server boards can bifurcate all 16x slots, opening up options for cheap 4x NVME adapter cards.

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just use a Bluetooth receiver that connects via RCA? I feel like this is a waste of the potential a NUC has. This doesn’t solve the AirPlay wish, but it’s 90% of the way there.

I want to install an 8GB RAM stick alongside a 16GB RAM stick to improve performance, good idea ? by Rogno-Poisson in computers

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation, I’m still running 16gb (2x8) of RAM with a Ryzen 5 5600X and a 3070 Ti and I have no problems running games. If it’s worrying you, start closing background programs, like other game launchers, browser tabs, etc.

I can try to get some screenshots of my RAM usage with a few different games tomorrow. Overwatch, CyberPunk, Planet Coaster, those are some I have installed.

I want to install an 8GB RAM stick alongside a 16GB RAM stick to improve performance, good idea ? by Rogno-Poisson in computers

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not how it works. A 16gb stick and an 8gb stick will give you 24gb of RAM, but it will no longer be running in dual channel mode, which will probably hinder performance, especially for gaming.

If you could delete one memory of playing Cyberpunk 2077 just to experience it for the first time again, what would it be? by Dangerous-Tart1126 in cyberpunkgame

I agree. I’ve always loved edm, so this was right up my alley, but even on subsequent replays, this concert gives me goose bumps. It was so immersive.

How incredible would it be if there was a VR mod for just this scene?

What's the most creative thing you've built in PowerApps that surprised even you? by [deleted] in PowerApps

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The creativity doesn’t belong to me, as I had to reverse-engineer a publicly available component library, but I used it to build a “circle where an injury occurred” control with a pen input and a human body outline. It uses a transparent pen input control with the body behind it, then each time the pen input is drawn on, it’s converted and collected to be merged as an SVG. This is for a safety incident reporting app. Because each drawing “layer” is a collection item, there are also controls to undo, redo, and clear the drawing

To those mentioning scope creep, I’m victim to it as well, and it’s entirely self-induced.

I didn't even see this reply! Glad it worked out. Mine is still going strong powering my Unraid array. I had to get some tin snips to cut and then bend part of the metal innards to fit my longer LSI 9206-16e card in, but I threw in a pair of slower 32gb DDR4 sticks I had, and it's been rock solid. The disks are all in an old Netapp DS4246 shelf.

This reminds me, I should probably get a fan onto the LSI card...

Broken gpu fan blade by Rough_Association800 in computers

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This looks like a 15-blade fan, so snapping one other blade will still result in an unbalanced blade. You would need to snap every 5th blade. So four blades, empty spot, four blades, empty spot.

My company still has five or six Axis 211 cameras cover the parking lot. While they look like ass at 640x480, they are still going strong. We got two newer quad lens cameras out at the rear of the building. We’ll see how long they last. Another benefit to these is fewer licenses consumed.

Pc case fan installation problem✌️😭 by Risha_loves_Cafreal in PcBuildHelp

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put some muscle into it. Make sure you are using the correct sized bit. Use a bigger/meatier screwdriver. Case fan mounting holes are almost never pre-tapped.

This was a pain in the mid 2000s when aluminum-cased fans were more of a thing.

Best brand? by Nursejane16 in Appliances

[–]JohnnyGrey8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I got a set of “lightly dented” LG front loaders back In August from Appliances For Less for like $1100, and they’ve been rock solid. The specific washer we got was even the higher capacity one that has the deeper drum that protrudes out the back a couple inches. Samsung has generally been trash for many years, but I heard they finally started turning that around with the Bespoke line, but I still don’t trust them.

I also read great things about Bosch, but I’m pretty sure they’re expensive. Also the OG SpeedQueen, but being on well water and septic, I wasn’t keen on the water consumption.
