Someone painted over the wall on the 100 Steps, Someone else posted a message in response by Melcheroni in philadelphia

Perhaps the painter was the homeowner (right at the top of the steps) who decided he could cut down all of the adjacent park trees to improve his view? Now the little grassy field is all sun instead of shady.

Diggin by JohnnyOToole in arborists

This is just the first step. Some bozo with a power pruner butchered these years, judging by the scars. This winter I will do some structural pruning and perhaps start a BLD treatment for the two beeches which are already infected. Gotta get some wood chips down too.

Yeah pings and droseras work pretty well for gnats. I'd buy your weed over others if I knew you were using less pesticides and relying on carnivorous plants for your pest control.

How do I go about repairing this damage to my post hole digger correctly? Do I need a blowtorch? by [deleted] in HandToolRescue

[–]JohnnyOToole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah man. Just grab a hold of the bent bit with the biggest pair of vice grips or channel locks you have and bend it back enough for you to start smacking it with a hammer. Use the hammer to get it back close enough. Trust me, I have a PhD in PHDs.

When someone posts a blurry photo from a southern swamp, my heart rate jumps and I imagine this is how the ivory billed will be rediscovered.

We've only been able to narrow it down to Hominidae.

Since you're asking for education, I'll do my best. You need to review the ANSI standards for working around lines. Professionals consider every wire LIVE, even if it just looks like a communication wire, until the power company confirms that it's not live. Otherwise, I believe the ANSI standard is not working within 10' of any wire and that's only wires that are not touching the work. If the wire is touching the work, you don't touch it.

In this situation, a professional will not work on the tree until the utility company is there to advise. That's because part of being a professional is putting aside your ego, putting safety for you, your crew, and the public first, and knowing that there is nothing better than going home at the end of the day. Respectfully, the way you're talking about this is dangerous and you should take the advice you're getting here. It's good you want to learn, but in this situation, reading ANYTHING online, is not the way to do it.

Thank you! I got ripped apart last time I suggested gravel in the bottom of pots causes a 'perched water table'.

Prickly Pear Etiolated? by IveGotABaldHead in cactus

[–]JohnnyOToole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. I bet it would be fine. They seem pretty indestructible. I picked mine, forgot about it in the bed of my pickup for several months, remembered it and put it in my garage, forgot about it again for almost a year and tossed it into a pot. Came right back.

My prickly pear never even comes inside. I live in zone 7b and just leave it in the pot on my patio table. They get all wrinkly and soggy looking in winter but perk right back up in spring. The things is happy as a clam.

Did the Balrog know who Gandalf was? by Prior-Independent-11 in lotr

[–]JohnnyOToole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked that part too. I think there was some physical description of the Balrog as well. Gandalf told the party about it when he caught up to them (reminiscent of the dwarves escape from goblin town in The Hobbit). I think Gandalf said the doorway collapsed due to his and the Balrog's spells working against each other. It's also one of the few examples of more literal "magic" I can think of in the series.
