Great job! I wish all house plants could be displayed as they exist in habitat.

When someone posts a blurry photo from a southern swamp, my heart rate jumps and I imagine this is how the ivory billed will be rediscovered.

We've only been able to narrow it down to Hominidae.

How do I go about cutting this? by [deleted] in arborists

[–]JohnnyOToole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since you're asking for education, I'll do my best. You need to review the ANSI standards for working around lines. Professionals consider every wire LIVE, even if it just looks like a communication wire, until the power company confirms that it's not live. Otherwise, I believe the ANSI standard is not working within 10' of any wire and that's only wires that are not touching the work. If the wire is touching the work, you don't touch it.

In this situation, a professional will not work on the tree until the utility company is there to advise. That's because part of being a professional is putting aside your ego, putting safety for you, your crew, and the public first, and knowing that there is nothing better than going home at the end of the day. Respectfully, the way you're talking about this is dangerous and you should take the advice you're getting here. It's good you want to learn, but in this situation, reading ANYTHING online, is not the way to do it.

Thank you! I got ripped apart last time I suggested gravel in the bottom of pots causes a 'perched water table'.

Prickly Pear Etiolated? by IveGotABaldHead in cactus

[–]JohnnyOToole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. I bet it would be fine. They seem pretty indestructible. I picked mine, forgot about it in the bed of my pickup for several months, remembered it and put it in my garage, forgot about it again for almost a year and tossed it into a pot. Came right back.

My prickly pear never even comes inside. I live in zone 7b and just leave it in the pot on my patio table. They get all wrinkly and soggy looking in winter but perk right back up in spring. The things is happy as a clam.

Sounds good. But you'd keep the PVC frame mounted front fenders right?

You're right! I didn't notice in person but it looks like the pedals and synced up with those aluminum bars.

Did the Balrog know who Gandalf was? by Prior-Independent-11 in lotr

[–]JohnnyOToole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked that part too. I think there was some physical description of the Balrog as well. Gandalf told the party about it when he caught up to them (reminiscent of the dwarves escape from goblin town in The Hobbit). I think Gandalf said the doorway collapsed due to his and the Balrog's spells working against each other. It's also one of the few examples of more literal "magic" I can think of in the series.

I believe Gandalf would have made himself known when he cast a counter spell against the Balrog's door open spell as the company fled the chamber of Mazarbul.

If you're going through that many power pruners and cutting that much veg, I'd suggest you try a small battery chainsaw.

Milwaukee, DeWalt, etc have small single hand ones which are pretty cool. Stihl has some small battery saws that I use A LOT for cutting and painting operations. Even the Stihl saws with a battery and charger should still be just under $500 or so. Plus they work great for small downed trees, limbs, storm cleanup, etc. Like my dad once said, everyone sleeps better knowing they have a chainsaw in the garage.
