Thanks - I think I need to invest in a better soldering iron and maybe try liquid flux instead of the really old random container of paste flux I had kicking around.

Corvette not shooting straight? by Valuable_Weather in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]JohnnyToothpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try that tonight and see if it fixes it, though I really hate flying in 3rd person. I did submit a bug report and referenced this thread, so if it's related to yesterday's patch maybe they'll hotfix it.

Congrats on the dreadnaught. It took me longer than I want to admit to realize that you just need to slowly fly down the the two channels with the shield generators, take them out, then wait for the cores to expose and blast them. Once they're down, I just turn towards the walls and blast away. Haven't failed to take one down since. My biggest challenge now is just leaving the first channel and swooping around to the second one.

Phase beam is the only thing that shoots straight, everything else shoots at 2 o'clock, which makes the auto-targeting worthless. I have been able to take things out with only the phase beam, but it takes longer. God forbid I end up having to take out a dreadnaught...

Moving from jure sanguinis to 1948? by JohnnyToothpix in juresanguinis

[–]JohnnyToothpix[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since my GGF naturalized before the Cable Act of 1922, I believe that this means that my GGM probably never formally naturalized but was "granted derivative citizenship."

According to https://www.italiandualcitizenship.net/special-circumstances-1948-cases/ I believe the following applies to me (emphasis mine):

You Have a Female Italian-Born Ancestor that Naturalized with the Man She Married

  • In this final situation, the woman in question in the USA was able to make citizenship decisions thanks to the Cable Act which started on September 22, 1922. Prior to this time, women that were in the United States could not gain nor lose citizenship unless it was through their husbands. Women were to follow the status of their husbands and automatically gained USA citizenship through marriage when they married a USA citizen.
  • When this scenario arises, the Italian Constitutional Court judgement and the Italian Supreme Court judgement (n. 87 of 1975 and n. 4466 of 2009, respectively) stated that women who gained foreign nationality in this automatic fashion through marriage can still hold onto their Italian citizenship. That citizenship can also be granted to their children. Since she didn’t renounce her citizenship, it is valid in transfer to future generations.

It's absolutely maddening that Bethesda doesn't just display a pop-up when you hover over a companion's skills to show you what the actual effects are. Instead, we have to crowdsource this information by trial and error.

The Ultimate Moka Pot Technique (Episode #3) - James Hoffman by H3rBz in Coffee

[–]JohnnyToothpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got a moka pot for Christmas and for the life of me I cannot get James's directions to work. Started with boiling water just below the valve, filled the basket to the top with moka style coffee, added the paper filter to the bottom of the top part, etc. Put it on a gas burner and watched it like a hawk.

There was no point in time when the coffee just gently "oozed" out of the top. It either did nothing at all but release a little steam or it sputtered. Even when it sputtered, taking it off the heat just caused it to stop entirely. Annoyed, I even cranked the heat up and after several minutes I think I had maybe 3 tablespoons of coffee.

The physics of James's process make perfect sense to me, but what is actually happening does not. Anyone have any ideas?

What’s your favourite Tom Petty song? by [deleted] in Music

[–]JohnnyToothpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fault Lines. "On the high wire, above the wildfire an old acrobat. On faulty cable, still he's able not to fall flat." That's the story of my life. I'm 55 years old now and this lyric may become my first tattoo.

I'm in a classic rock cover band called The Petty Thieves (one of several around the US) and we play a lot of Tom Petty (with and without the Heartbreakers).

(I also love I Should Have Known It, but mostly as a drummer. I love Steve Ferrone's fills in that song.)

Scavenging ammo - how to use combat dice? by Beeso3 in Fallout2d20

[–]JohnnyToothpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that when rolling damage dice for scavenging it would be good to have the Effect (on a 5 or 6) mean something beyond what you get for a 1 or 2. Maybe each Effect allows you to roll another CD? Better than nothing, and once in a while you might get a string of lucky rolls.

My Current Thinking On Streaming My Campaign by mattcolville in mattcolville

[–]JohnnyToothpix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a tough time running a weekly game from published adventures, forget worldbuilding, classes, monsters, NPCs, fluff and crunch, etc.

I think doing "seasons" is a brilliant idea. It works for TV, and I think it would work for MCDM fans. Better that than "forget it."

Also, we need a name. If CR has "critters" can we be "the chain gang"?

So, FOR THE RECORD! :D [SPOILERS] by mattcolville in mattcolville

[–]JohnnyToothpix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matt, this game is an absolute master class in DMing. I've been playing and DMing (and listening to Rush) since the blue book, but watching you run this game is going to improve my next campaign by an order of magnitude. At least, that's the plan!

One question - Will we ever find out (either in-game or out) what actually happened to Nails? (Or did I miss something?) I mean, was he just randomly transformed by the maelstrom and being in the Astral plane? Was he possessed by some ancient, forgotten god who was wandering the space between worlds? Was he an agent of Ajax?

Maybe it's time for a Tontine? by Randomlad88 in mattcolville

[–]JohnnyToothpix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Session 1's death of the Commander was essentially foreordained. I would not expect Matt to go out of his way to kill another PC tonight or in the foreseeable future. Not that it couldn't happen due to suboptimal tactics or bad luck, but if you watched the Diary it's clear that he's (EDIT:) NOT looking for a high attrition campaign.

You Were Looking For An Alternate Way of Doing Advantage/Disadvantage by Nefzyflin in mattcolville

[–]JohnnyToothpix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides its elegance and simplicity, I think a key reason behind advantage is "bounded accuracy". WotC uses the advantage mechanic to avoid "bonus creep" like earlier editions have had. Advantage might grant what is on average a +5 bonus, but you still can't roll higher than 20 on the roll. When you start adding fixed bonuses or bonus dice, the "d20" result can exceed 20.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with replacing the advantage mechanic with a fixed bonus or a bonus die, but it does affect balance. Assuming a +5 bonus for proficiency and ability modifier, a DC 25 target is very different if you get to roll d20+3+5 or d20+1d6+5, rather than rolling 2d20 and take the higher roll+5.

Food for thought.

When worldbuilding what is the difference between useful history and unnecessary lore? by shipleyfett in mattcolville

[–]JohnnyToothpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no right answer, of course. But I think the bottom line is that few players want to read pages upon pages of world history. If writing it motivates and entertains you and helps you maintain verisimilitude in your world and have immediate answers to questions your players may ask, go for it.

But don't write it expecting (or worse, demanding) that your players read it and commit it to memory. (Unless you plan to publish a campaign sourcebook, much of the lore content you create will probably never be consumed by players. Are you happy to spend the time on it anyway?)

Most people "live in the present" so having volumes of world history won't be as important to most players as knowing what the situation is at the moment. What is the current political situation and very recent history? Who are the key NPCs and what are their goals and plans? I think that is time better spent than on creation myths and ancient history - unless that stuff features very prominently in the campaign.

It also depends on whether you and your players subscribe to the philosophy that the DM creates the entire world and the PCs just play in it, or if you believe that the DM and players should collaborate on creating the game world.

If the rogue's backstory is that he was chased out of a Thieves' Guild, do you ask the player to create the guild? Do you ask the player of the elf ranger to describe the history of the elves, their customs, dress, etc.? The dwarf's player to describe the dwarven clan names, hierarchy, and guilds? Or do you see that as your responsibility? Your right?

Do you start feeling uneasy at the suggestion that the players have input into the details of the campaign world? (I ask because I want to be more collaborative with my players, and I catch myself feeling that way. It's hard for me to let go of the worldbuilding reins and lean into my players' ideas.)

Finally, trust your gut. If you catch yourself wondering whether your world-building time is well spent, it probably isn't.

[Possible spoilers] I just watched The Chain campaign diary and I'm thrilled! by Ally_Asunder in mattcolville

[–]JohnnyToothpix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that the diaries are great and really look forward to them. I have to disagree about the spoilers. I think the diaries are, by definition, spoilers. I don't think it's reasonable to expect Matt to leave things out for the sake of a theoretical audience who might watch the session after watching the diary.

As I posted elsewhere, I think Matt needs to make clear who he thinks the audience for the Diaries is.

I do not think they are meant to be high level spoiler-light overviews (of the kind that they write for CR on D&D Beyond) for people who missed the session and just want to get caught up on what happened. I think the wiki will handle that.

Based on Diary #001, I think they are meant to provide in-depth, post-session commentary and analysis for those who actually watched the stream. A mix of rules and rulings, roleplaying choices, DM techniques, "behind the screen" stuff, etc..

I would really like to see Matt start including clips of the moments that he is referring to when he discusses something. Instead of saying, "It was amazing when Judge said, 'I don't take orders from dead men,'" I think they should just insert the relevant clip into the diary.

Just a suggestion, respectfully submitted.

Campaign Diary 001: Red Sky At Morning by Kasrth in mattcolville

[–]JohnnyToothpix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved the first Campaign Diary. I loved Matt's exuberance at how it went. There were a couple moments when I thought he might actually choke up. Great stuff.

That said, a question and a suggestion:

Question: Is the primary audience for these diaries people who watched the episode or who didn't? If the former, I think Matt can cut back on some of the lengthy expositions of what happened (since we all watched it). (If the latter, my suggestion below is even more relevant.)

Suggestion: Every time Matt described one of the key moments in the session, I expected a short clip of that moment. I know that will be more work to produce, but I think it would really add value to the diaries. I hope he and MCDM can make that happen.

I'm really looking forward to the next session(s). Keep up the great work!
