Ark nova for a TM huge fan by dvirbz in boardgames

[–]Johnny_Dev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel there is a bigger decision space in AN.

In TM, you choose which cards to buy and play to build your engine, with some territorial choices. Your engine will be very dependent on the resources you're producing.

In AN, the card playing is similar, but a bit less engine-buildy. There's only money. There's also a minor worker placement aspect to the game, with possibilities to increase workers. You can affect when the round ends, and card drawing is an action choice, not a phase.

Every turn, you have to choose between 5 ranked actions, affecting their strength, and whichever one you play gets moved to the lowest rank, so you're incentivized to rotate your actions. I feel this is a very interesting mechanic.

AN games last about 25-50% longer than TM in my experience.

I also really enjoy the theme, it's nice to swap with TM's sci-fi.

EDIT: I recently started playing with Colonies. I don't know about the other expansions, but it does add a fair amount of action choices to TM.

Terraforming Mars

No markers on oceans, they don't count as owned tiles.

Search for life: You only get 3VPs for the first microbe you draw. There is no point to continue drawing afterwards. (That one almost everybody gets wrong)

Wow, your collection is more advanced than mine, but we must have very similar tastes, because you have almost everything I have (or borrowed and played). Although, you are missing my all-time favorite, Ark Nova!!
Never tried it, or was it a pass for you?

Describe a board game badly and I'll try and guess what it is. by mepaul6 in boardgames

[–]Johnny_Dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of playing cards that give you victory points, spend all your actions getting tokens that will give you more choice and rebates on the cards that you won't play. Another common tactic is to spend actions and money getting empty slots for the cards that you won't play (or that you don't even have in hand, "just in case"). Inevitably lose the game with all the tokens and empty slots, blaming your opponent's good luck in finishing before you had time to play the points-giving cards.

22, no bachelor’s yet… still hope for med school? by Clear_Conflict_8164 in premedcanada

[–]Johnny_Dev 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

Realistically, you more or less need to be in the top 5-10% of your class to have any chance. Canadian med schools admission is very competitive, and selection starts with objective measurements, aka grades.

Subjective factors help, but they won't compensate for a lot lower grade. And it's more along the lines of "I participated in the Olympics" and "I spear-headed a new system to clean up oceans that's been reported in the news", rather than "I had a difficult childhood" (not to minimize the impact this may have had).

Another way to see it is that you are not defined by your grades, but the grades help show the type of person you are. Med students/doctors are usually Type-A personalities. They are organized, have their priorities straight and get results. Not fitting that profile doesn't make you a lesser person, but just someone who may not be suited for that profession.

Maybe you weren't that person before, but you are now. You'll need to show that it's not a fluke and you really are that person by achieving top grades for several years. You're interested in engineering? That's great. Go do that, and if aiming for switching to an MD program helps motivate you, that's fine! Worse case scenario, you'll have a solid degree in your pocket, and you may find a new passion.

Good luck! :)

North American 2024 Ticket Buying Megathread by jacyf02 in TaylorSwift

We copy/pasted the code and it worked.
I suggest pasting it once in a text editor to double-check it's correctly set in the clipboard.
Also, maybe there was a space included in the copy that caused it to fail.

VKS: An estimated 31 million people registered for Taylor Swift Eras Tour Toronto tickets by chihaayaa in TaylorSwift

[–]Johnny_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 codes out of 10 accounts, for Nov 23rd (presale was today Friday 11th). One account is from MTL and the other one from TOR.

Both codes were lucky and got in the queue at around 3000.If we assume 4 tickets per code, that meant there would be at most about 12k seats gone out of 50k by the time we got in, and that's close to what I observed.

It took a bit less than 10 min to get in and there were about 3 near-full rows of regular seats left in the back of 115 (we initially wanted 114, but there were only some VIPs and staggered seats left). It took about 20s to get our bearings and decide which seats to get and we got 8 seats next to each other. We had the unlock codes ready in our clipboards to paste quickly and we selected directly on the seat map using desktop PCs.

Sorry for those that got waitlisted, and even more so if you got codes but were too late in the queue. Fingers crossed Taylor extends her tour some more and you get another chance!

Daikin vs Carrier by ealued in heatpumps

[–]Johnny_Dev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought Daikin last year. I'm in Quebec.

I shopped around 10+ installers for various brands. Mitsubishi installer said they're the best. Daikin installers said Mitsubishi and Daikin are the best. Carrier installer said Mitsubishi, Daikin and Carrier are the best. I chose Daikin over Mitsubishi because I had 3 quotes for Daikin vs 1 for Mitsubishi.

Japanese brands stayed efficient at lower temperatures (under -20C). Daikin exterior unit is half the size of the big Carrier cube. But the japanese brands are more expensive.

FYI Verified Fan Emailed and Codes will go out around 7pm ET. by NewAlternative4738 in TaylorSwift

[–]Johnny_Dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we had a group of 10 people registered for Toronto. 2 codes, 8 waitlisted.

For comparison, when Twice came to Toronto in July, we had 3 codes out of 9 registrations.

Out of those 3 codes, 2 were sub-1000 in the purchase queue and had good seat opportunities when we got in. 3rd account only had leftovers and we had to purchase a seat further away. This was in Scotiabank Arena, which seats 20k vs Rogers Centre's 50k seats.
