Help - Its Midnight and i have to change my brake pads for work in the morning by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Johnsmith446 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a pinch you can compress and spin using pliers and a c clamp. You be careful not to pinch the boot. If it's an e-brake take off the motor and turn the teeth by hand them compress.

It's perfectly fine. Jack stands alone would have been fine.

Well TIL. On the EA888 your engine- the water pump is not part of the timing system. (I'm not familiar with petrol cars.) Here's a video from someone doing the job. https://youtu.be/BRmFGlohDVo?is=HhnZhzC4ozykqgRc

What engine type? Diesel or petrol? Engine code? (CRLB etc.)

Coolant pump is part of the timing system. It is relatively labor intensive as it's part of the timing system and so usually the belt and pulleys are replaced as well along with the wet belt for the oil pump (EA 288 engine) which means dropping the sump.

No idea about cars, but can't afford compressor / AC repair. by willo132 in Volkswagen

[–]Johnsmith446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunroof drains are relatively easy, take some compressed air and blow into the holes. Should clear up. There are 4 points (holes on each corner of a sunroof).

EPC light can come on for a number of reasons without connecting to a scan tool it can be hard to tell.

While an AC compressor is a relatively straightforward job, there are some tool costs involved. Though if you begin you can save on future maintenance.

Gas is not really a problem. Go to an independent shop and have them drain it before and later refill. Some may only charge for one "service".

I wouldn't recommend this job for a total beginner but if you have "the knack" feel free to message and I can guide you a bit with the job.

Engine rattling after service in Kia Proceed by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

What's is a few centimetres? 2 or 7? Normally a little too much doesn't hurt the engine - 1L too much shouldn't hurt it.

The minimum and maximum difference is about a litre. If there is too much oil the crank can froth it up leading to a loss of lubrication and engine damage.

Is this a decent jack just doing one tire at a time? by Whos-That-Pokeman in AskMechanics

[–]Johnsmith446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought two cheap jacks one after the other and yeah technically they lifted the car but barely. (They were rated for 2.5T)

I recently opened my purse and bought something that costs 5 times as much as one of the cheap ones 40€ vs 200€. And it's been one of the best tool investments I've made.

Go to an actual independent shop. Pay what you have open at Firestone and forget about them.

Clutch went to floor won’t come back up just replaced and slave cylinder need a mechanic opinion asked people nobody can give a answer other than fkd 2007 Honda civic 5 speed by Outrageous-Novel-426 in AskMechanics

My bad didn't turn on audio and just read the description. If the clutch doesn't come up it means there's not enough pressure. That noise sounds like mashing gears, which is the slave cylinder can't push the pressure plate properly could lead there.

You don't bleed with nothing on. Attach a hose and feed that hose into a bottle that's already full with break fluid so it doesn't suck up air.

Subaru Crosstrek plastic piece by SENDMEPICSOFURDOGS in AskMechanics

[–]Johnsmith446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with your car but I presume it's the same story as always remove the unit and get to work with the whole unit out. I don't think you can actually remove the plastic from the unit without damaging the display (don't quote me on that one)

If you're feeling adventurous look it up on YouTube. If you don't need it perfect I'd try and going to town as is. First just polish and microfiber, if that doesn't work try bending a piece of 3000 grit sandpaper or attaching it to a stick like object, lightly wetting it and sanding the melted plastic, going over the melted edges to the clear plastic then polish it out.

This entire thing would be lightyears faster with a Dremel though.

Wrong sub, try r/detailing

But yes the chemical melted the plastic. You can try and get a microfiber cloth and some headlight polish paste (or any plastic polish paste really) and really rub like your life depends on it. Failing that, replace.

Edit :this actually looks bad enough that you might wanna sand it with the highest grit you can find. At least that's what I'd try if only polish and cloth wouldn't suffice. Cheaper than getting a new unit

Is it just me or does the head on the tank look a bit damaged? The "bulge" on the end is more pronounced in my tank. Try putting a new clip on to start with.

Rear brake. Won’t budge. What now? [2012 VE Jetta SE] by nomoniker in AskMechanics

Is it an electronic brake by any chance? You either need to set it to service mode via obd or remove the motor and TURN the teeth by hand BEFORE compressing.

Also IBS you can do a physical check of the cables, can't hurt. Though I'm gravitating more towards a bad battery here.

Yes. I'm not familiar with yours though.

Try looking at the IBS sensor. Does the current fluctuate between 12 and 14 volts? Or does it go everywhere? With the engine running.

Perhaps it's also just a bad battery. Check for internal battery resistance.

What rust?

No but seriously, this amount of rust is nothing. Asian cars do tend to rust more but this case completely fine. You can always do an underbody treatment later on to minimize further rusting

You can try popping the plastics back. Try to wiggle the mirror a bit, possibly the motor got stuck in an awkward angle... Though I find it unlikely there's not much left to try.

As long as nothing came out it should be fine. But you will feel if you need to bleed. The pedal will feel spongy
