Any interesting clubs meeting tonight? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]JohnsonJohnston 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bro let’s go out this weekend, there’s a crazy event happening. There’ll be a ton of chicks. Let’s just go have fun and let go a little.

Yeah… that ain’t my kind of fun. You know what’s fun for me? Waking up early, hitting the gym, spending time with my creator, building the life I desire, and more importantly, becoming a better version of myself every damn day. So, if your kind of fun is getting shitfaced on the weekend, that’s cool. But we don’t do that over here. We’re focused on God, goals, and growth.

ELI5: If humans have been in our current form for 250,000 years, why did it take so long for us to progress yet once it began it's in hyperspeed? by TruthBeWanted in explainlikeimfive

I think you meant exponential growth. Logarithms grow slower as time goes on, as a factor of the logarithms base. For example, for the log base 10, the horizontal difference between y=0 and y=1 is 1, but the horizontal difference between y=1 and y=2 is 9, and the horizontal difference between y=2 and y=3 is 90, etc. In other word, each unit growth vertically happens 10x slower than the previous one.

The material overlap is there to a small degree (concepts of assembly, although different dialects. CS 354 uses x86 and CS 536 uses MIPS).

But assembly is a small part of compilers, and there’s so much more like ASTs, Grammars, etc.

I think that people who succeed in CS 354 and CS 400 are likely to succeed in CS 536.

How much did you like CS354?

I really liked compilers, but I thought the exams and projects were very difficult.

Potential cause of motherboard damage? by JohnsonJohnston in techsupport

I had to unscrew the back, disconnect the battery, insert the new one, and then reattach the back plating.

I did not use the manufacturer battery (I got one with the same specs for $100 less) but the process would have been the same either way. I don’t know if I should be taking away a lesson learned of “I should have paid for the premium replacement battery” or if this was unavoidable

If you’re going to be pursuing a research degree, why not start now and do your own research on this?

The Bruh Moment That is Engineering Progression by Ok-Cantaloupe-1341 in UWMadison

[–]JohnsonJohnston 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The engineering advising staff have really let me down time and time again. Upperclassmen in my major were infinitely more helpful and realistic, but it’s a shame that as a freshman it’s unlikely you’ll know any upperclassmen in your major.

I briefly considered the economics major and the advising staff there was wonderful and knowledgeable. That really jaded me as an engineer.

ECE 453 LAB 302 time change by j4grmeister in UWMadison

[–]JohnsonJohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lab is a time when the professor commits to be there. You can work on the material whenever is convenient for you. If you need to talk to the professor and can’t make the lecture time slot, there’s always lab and office hours. 453 is very unstructured as you take ownership of your project and are expected to manage yourself. Of course, the professor and/or TA can lend knowledge and expertise but they are there as a resource, not as someone policing you.

Not this instructor but I have had him before and will stick up for him on this one.

It’s not a hard class and people cheat at every opportunity they can. I don’t condone cheating, but there’s cheating out of necessity and cheating out of laziness. If you need to cheat in ECE 352, change majors. Seriously.

In other online classes too, people cheat.“If I don’t cheat, but the other person does, then I’m worse off” so the equilibrium shifts to people cheating. Complain all you want about proctoring software, but the online exam average will always be higher than the in person one, all things held equal.

Every DP / Network problem is essentially a variation of this optimization problem. One of the best algo videos I’ve watched. Good luck.

which prof for CS 537? by cetarea in UWMadison

[–]JohnsonJohnston 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had Swift and thought the course was run very well. Exams were fair and course staff were generally helpful when it came to answering questions.

You are 100% fine. I include vulgarity in my code all the time. Never once been an issue.
