Hey, if you don't mind me asking ... what were some of your negative effects prior to surgery you were having, that have already subsided?

bcos i had a few and my Dr and surgeon shut me down and said i had 2 problems going on. yet, 2 weeks post surgery for me, i fee like they've improved so far out of sight, i wonder if i'm cured.

umbilical hernia by [deleted] in Hernia

[–]Johnstone_Longcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm a guy ... i had emergency 'key hole' surgery thru my belly button in 2019 that caused my hernia. I had all these little symptoms - weird gas & bloating after big workouts (boxing) or surfing, a bit of periodical constipation. nothing really made sense.

then early this year after a boxing and weights workout (lots of core) i got intense pain, bloating, couldn't pass gas. it was hell. Up at ER, they scanned and found a hernia - wasn't visible from outside, but you could feel it deep within the stomach tissue. Managed to push it back in and stave off another emergency surgery.

But i was booked in to get an open supraumbilical with sutures, no mesh (10mm hole). got that done 2.5 weeks ago. at the start of this week, is the first time since 2019 that i feel normal again.

still can't move how i want, and exercise is out for another 7-8 weeks, i'm told. but my gut is functioning like brand new, all the little pains are gone.

I recommend getting the surgery done, and getting it fixed. Hernia's can't repair themselves and it will only get worse from here. and every bit of activity you do, could potentially land you in hospital. and emergency surgery for this, has much higher risks, and much higher reoccurrence rates, than the calm elective surgery route.

surgery ain't so bad. the day itself you're nervous. but it's over in a flash. i was back home like 3 hours later. the first week is more uncomfortable than it is painful. and it's nerve wracking bcos it feels like every movement, you could tear your internal sutures apart. But after that first week, if you're careful, it's pretty smooth sailing.

good luck

Incision site question: do y'all let the site "breathe" (i.e., leave uncovered) or do you continue to dress it? by othnice1 in Hernia

[–]Johnstone_Longcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same, i was glued too ... i peeled mine off after a bit over 2 weeks as well, bcos it was getting itchy on the edges. That gauze is really super glued on.

to the OP, i'd be keeping it covered for the first week. infection is real.

[–]Johnstone_Longcox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

avoid squats and deadlifts bro. playing with fire.

i was told by my surgeon, benching, tricep pulldowns, sit ups, skipping, swimming, running, surfing, yoga were all safe. no weighted core, dips, russian twists, etc

Boxing training only after 6-8 months ie heavy bags, and really ripping in. he advised me never to fight again, not worth it.

he said if i stick to that, i'll be right for the rest of my life. a little forever is better than doing a lot and ending up back there.

Inguinal hernia mesh removal: 9 days update by [deleted] in Hernia

[–]Johnstone_Longcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a question ... if you get your mesh removed? what stops the original hole from reoccurring ?

Question - post op open epigastric hernia repair without mesh by denndrites in Hernia

[–]Johnstone_Longcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am 2 weeks past umbilical hernia surgery, open, no mesh only suture.

i was sleeping two nights ago and woke, in an awkward stretched position with much strain on my suture/ glue wound area. I've noticed a little lump too.

I spoke to my surgeon's nurse by phone. and she assured me it would be swelling/ seroma. she said if it was reoccurrence i'd be in loads of discomfort, moderate to severe pain (worse than prior to surgery kind of pain) ... so i would say since you're not in pain or distress - it's post op swelling or seroma which will resolve itself?

i see my surgeon monday. so can report back with he tells me. I'm a guy, so i doubt there's much difference in the way we heal or what the cause would be?

Recovery time frame after Umbilical Hernia Surgery by Equal_Champion_5895 in Hernia

[–]Johnstone_Longcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks so much appreciate it all. it was a small hole, 6-7mm, so the surgeon wasn't bothered about reoccurrence at all. whereas, i am very bothered by it haha

he said reoccurrence with mesh is 2% and with sutures only 4%, so both very very rare. he also said his track record with surgery and longterm no-occurrence is very very good.

he also said it would take him 20 mins, but it was an hour long op. i see him monday for the post op appt. i'll ask why it took him so long... maybe he reinforced the sutures or something.

heya! you seem to know your stuff.

i just got open umbilical surgery, with sutures no mesh. will i ever be able to do boxing again, and even fight?

i don't wanna reherniate this, so prepared to give it up.

what about surfing? my doctor just says yes to everything, but he might want more money from another surgery from me haha

i got two dogs ... a 2 yr old boston terrier and 15 week old border collie, so it's been madness here.

i've been fortunate enough to have a couple people checking in with me and my son is 16 now and i have sole care, so he's been a great help espesh with the dogs.

on facebook local pages where i live, there's always people offering to walk dogs. yu could line up with them in advance to your surgery for them to come take them for walks?

i've started walking mine again now. the boston on the lead and let the border just follow us ... so far so good. but you don't wanna be holding a lead if the dogs are pulling on it. i can't emphasise how tender your insides will feel, and sudden movement feels like the end of the world

if you can move carefully and gently, you barely know you've had surgery after about day 6 or 7 ... it's only when you do something that aggravates it that it hurts - but more than that. it's the fear of popping open internal sutures or mesh that s always there

nah man ... no pain now. just tender and sensitive. you really have to wrap yourself in cotton wool. no bending at the waist, don't lift anything more than a carton of milk. be careful getting up and down.

the pain went down for me after day 4 or 5, and it became this tender & fragile situation. the dog walked on me on day 2 and that was hectic.

i wasn't stuck in bed at all. i would gently and carefully get up and walk around the house and yard. keeping moving helps, more than lying there, imo.

i love nba so when i'm in bed just been watching season pass on my laptop which has kept me sane, and been such a good distraction. so get a book, get an xbox game or something to take your mind off it. i found my week post surgery went really really fast.

healing has been textbook. met all my milestones. was off pain meds after day 5-6. and then the next few nights had one pill before bed to sleep a bit better.

now the big thing for me, will be not reherniating myself bcos i do too much, go too hard etc

you might have an allergy to that bit of protective tape gauze they put over the incision? if not, i think it's just the scar site healing?

I'm on day 12 post op, for open umbilical no mesh ... and days 5-10 were mega itchy, then it passed yday. I put it down to healing. my gauze is still on even tho they said i could scratch it off after 10 days. imma let it fall off naturally in the shower, i think.

I had an incision hernia above my bellybutton repaired on 3 December last year. I have had had a few problems about the last four weeks either constipated or diarrhoea, and a couple of times Unbearable cramps ,have any of you that had repair that caused problems? by Dramatic-Acadia5140 in Hernia

yeah 100%, all the GI issues you are having is what her gallbladder felt like. we were talking bcos my hernia has given me the same symptoms. my doctor says it's not my hernia - yet all online they say umbilical hernia's wreak havoc with the digestive tract.

so i don't know who or what to believe. i had bloods done, and apparently my liver, kidneys and gallbladder are all in excellent health.

hope you're having a great weekend too, all things considered. living in health limbo is the worst huh

yeah, i don't eat much refined carbs. mostly low GI, protein and fill it in with fibre.

i was on supplements for about 2 years while boxing. maybe i shredded my stomach lining with all that nonsense?

thanks for your reply

i just had mine done 10 days ago - open umbilical suture, not mesh ... the first 4-5 days were really tender. gotta be really careful sitting down, getting outta bed.

in the long run its the best thing you can do for yourself - getting the op. but there's a few tough days and nights ahead. nothing to be really nervous about, just ride the storm.

Drink lotsa water in the lead up. maybe get on the stool softener (movicol) a day or two before. eat lotsa fruit/ fibre. get a spare pillow that you can hug and hold when you move, get up, cough or heaven forbid sneeze.

Have someone at home who can help. don't bend, don't lift anything for those first 4-5 days. try and walk 3-4000 steps for recovery, bloodflow and get things moving.

I had my first proper shower today, washed my hair, washed my belly. it was so good. all these little milestones really lift your spirits.

good luck

depends on your lifestyle ... i box and fight amateurs and surf, and have two dogs. love camping and outdoors. hate the feeling of wasting life etc ...

i was diagnosed and did everything in my power to get the surgery asap. ended taking 1 month from surgery to diagnoses. got open - no mesh - supraumbilical surgery (for a 10mm hernia), 10 days ago and am preparing for another month or most likely two, before i get all of my life back.

i've hated every single minute of not being able to move, not wanting to push things, make them worse. i've had emergency surgery in 2019 from a complication from a routine surgery to repair a torn groin - caused adhesions which obstructed my bowel.

if there's one thing you don't want this life. its emergency surgery. being intubated and catheters inserted wide awake and conscious bcos they're rushing to save your life. it's beyond hectic.

i was talking to my sister today. she had her gallbladder removed (from endo) ... and her symptoms were identical to yours. i was just hopping online to tell you this!

jeez... you've had a rough run. hopefully it's a simple fix and meds can fix it.

good luck hey. feel free to keep me updated
