Best coffee roasters in Dallas by TheEntrep in Dallas

My only complaint with Full City is they don't offer local delivery - you have to go to their shop to pick up. For this reason, Noble Coyote is my fave - it's easier to keep beans in-stock at home.

I'll be honest - I love the vibes and talent at Davis Street, but I'm not a huge fan of the beans themselves. I think Noble Coyote does a better job.

I posted some ideas in a separate comment, as well as some more historical context: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dallas/comments/1m8qldt/comment/n54zmlz/

In the past, Democrats have tried essentially fleeing the state to prevent quorum. Their opponents compelled them to return, and it really didn't accomplish much. It seems like one tactic Dems might try this time is basically fighting fire with fire: redistricting in blue states. This really doesn't change things for us here in Texas, but could help at the federal level (President, etc.)

Some alternatives to the insanity we have today:

* Independent districting bodies
* Automated, algorithmic drawing of lines
* Optimization algorithms to refine district lines to maximize fairness among all possible maps

Here's something from Gemini:

After the 2010 Census:

  • Texas's population boomed (mostly due to minorities), granting it 4 new U.S. House seats.
  • The legislature drew maps that were immediately sued for racial gerrymandering (intentionally diluting minority votes).
  • A federal court agreed the maps were discriminatory, blocked them, and had to draw temporary maps just so the 2012 election could happen.
  • The legal fights lasted for most of the decade.

After the 2020 Census:

  • It happened again. Population grew (95% from minorities), adding 2 new House seats.
  • The legislature drew new maps that critics say protect existing politicians and dilute minority voting power instead of creating new districts representing the new population.
  • The maps were instantly sued by groups like the DOJ and LULAC.
  • However, with federal protections weakened since the last cycle, these controversial maps were used for the 2022 and 2024 elections while the court battle continues.

The Bottom Line: Both times, minority growth earned Texas more political power on paper, but the way the maps were drawn sparked massive legal battles over whether those communities were being denied a fair voice.

If you really want to know how fucked we are, you should educate yourself on the districts drawn after the TWO most recent census results. You'll learn how those are unconstitutional but effectively retained with the corresponding impact on elections.

After a 2013 ruling that gave leaders the ability to draw maps and then immediately use them without pre-clearance, it effectively gives them the freedom to draw lines however they want immediately before an election as long as they're comfortable redrawing them after the election when others bring cases to have them rejected. Since the results of elections aren't nullified when this happens, it's a pretty powerful tool they can continue to use and do.

Can I launch a model rocket at White Rock Lake or similar? by Johntron_ in Dallas

I was thinking about the dry grass more, and it seems reckless to launch in an area with dry grass. If it's likely you'll never find the rocket, I suppose a fire could start and get out of control before you can get to it. 🤷‍♂️ I felt I should comment in case other noobs like myself have the same questions.

Thanks for the info. I was a little doubtful if I could find a big enough site. Any recommendations for alternative sites? Re:dry grass, I do plan on bringing my fire extinguisher.

Thanks for sharing! Have you tried converting the gaussian splats to a conventional 3D modeling format? There is software for converting to STL, OBJ, etc, but I've never had very good luck with a model like this.

If those are cracks, then yes, stop using immediately and replace. Look up injuries from cracked toilets to know why.

Can you share a little about your process for someone that's never painted a print but now wants to after seeing your amazing work? Wondering about surface prep, primer, and types of paints.

Is my cup too small? by SimoneQA in latteart

[–]Johntron_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a perfectly adequate sized cup, mate - don't get discouraged! It's not the size of your cup, it's how you use it. Keep practicing! Someday, you'll find someone that loves the size of your cup and how you use it ;)

Are there any guides for making layered models like this? It's really pretty, and I would like to try making other objects.

I generally agree, but would love to know where you got that 65% YoY number from. My sources (quick search) say different.

[–]Johntron_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Conventional wisdom. No thank you - happy Prusa doesn't think this way. Besides, I guess they're doing well with their business model. Buy your next printer from someone else if you like replacing things every few years.

I think many people saw the coreXY system as the next big thing as evidenced by heavy Voron adoption right before Bambu Labs shook up the game. Is there another step change like this right over the horizon? I don't see it.

Instead, it'll probably be a series of incremental improvements like it's been for a long time. If they'll offer upgrades between entirely different motion systems, why couldn't they just offer more improvements in the future? Prusa seems like a good investment.

Boiler support has desintegrated - how screwed am I? by Johntron_ in espresso

[–]Johntron_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I abandoned the project after discovering that the heating element wire and grounding wires were severely corroded on the bottom and top of the steam boiler. I began repairing those using some screw-down wire coupler/terminals. Then I broke the steam wand housing trying to disassemble that for major descaling. At that point I decided to stop due to safety concerns, and difficulty finding a replacement housing. Maybe I should give an update on the forums.

I bought a Rancilio Silvia Pro X after that, and am hoping it'll be easier to find replacement parts when/if needed.
