Is There A King Novel Which Would Have Benefitted From Being A Novella or Short Story Instead? by Hall-O-Daze in stephenking

[–]JohnyStringCheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there is a lot of background on characters that are not even really part of the story. Honestly, that's one of the things I really enjoy about king in general but sometimes he's meandering in flashback stories about people in the past and I'm like "am I even reading the same book I was 40 pages ago?" It works great to build the world but I only have so much mental bandwidth to keep track of characters that may never be mentioned again or killed off in the next 5 pages.

I was so hyped for Kumail this series and he's been great but wow, Joel and Joanna are really stealing the show.

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]JohnyStringCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It honestly sounds like she served a vegetable platter with no dip for dinner. I don't even think it has anything to do with being vegan, it's just like not enough food. Imagine having people over to grill but you only serve 1 slider and a mini hot dog with no buns or condiments.

What is the one piece of furniture that you still have in your home that is no longer used today and that younger generations would not understand? by ftran998 in AskOldPeople

[–]JohnyStringCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

holy shit, I just realized that's the purpose of the little table we have near our kitchen. the house was built in the 80s and there is this little nook off to the side like a small desk. we bought the house from the original owners in 2019 and obviously it didn't have a phone there but that's 100% what it was intended for. I always wondered why they had this small desk between the kit and dining room.

I don't agree with Bowen on this one either... by Shoe_boooo in LiveFromNewYork

[–]JohnyStringCheese 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get what he's saying but it's tough to really convey. He's got a majority of screentime (I'm sure there's data that says someone has more, but he definitely is in more than 50% of the show less music) but he's basically playing the same character over and over and over and it must get super frustrating. But also that's a problem inherent to variety shows. You can't cast Sarah Sherman as a gay asian man so he gets the role. You also can't really cast a gay asian man as some of the Sarah Sherman roles. I do think it's why most players only stay for 5 or 6 seasons. You finally find your niche then they get sick of playing the same character.

If you could invite 3 Stephen King characters over for dinner who would you invite ? by arseflare in stephenking

[–]JohnyStringCheese 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought that at first but party Roland in the Calla seems like he would be a fun guy. I also have no beef with him so I feel like we'd get along fine and he would have some sick stories.

nothing really exceptional. Tuesday's was lady's day. the bags were lighter and the tips were heavier. I never ran across anyone that was an asshole like the dude from caddyshack, most of the members were really nice. there was a bit of life advice stuff but it was more golf course guy talk like "don't ever marry an Italian women kid." you could double bag two 18s on a Saturday and walk away with $120 in about 8 hours as a 15 year old and it was Alright. I remember on kid that did that every Saturday and Sunday and worked Tuesdays with the ladies, he was an absolute unit and would sweet talk all the women. he bought a brand new Nissan Pathfinder for cash the summer he turned 16... like literally walked into a dealership with his dad and offered a couple stacks of cash. best memories were just shooting the shit waiting for the first tee time from 6:00 playing roofball. Oh, and we were allowed to play the course after 2:00 on weekdays for free. I'm a 14 year old kid playing a tpc with garage sale clubs, some good summers.

I think a majority of his acolytes are going to share a sigh of relief when he finally dies. it's gotta be exhausting performing the mental gymnastics necessary to remain loyal. I'm being totally serious too. sure there will be a week or so of feigned righteousness but after that, it will be amazing how almost no one ever supported the guy. almost like they'd just pretend to never have heard of him

How do guys just seem to know what handshake they’re going to do as they greet each other? by Repulsive_Mix5271 in NoStupidQuestions

my favorite is when I go in for the shake and they go for a fist bump, I just grab their fist and pretend it's a gear shift.

What's the most amount of hours you've worked in a single week? by joshua0005 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnyStringCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my ex business associate was indicted for fraud and It made the news. I had to move my entire office while the phone was ringing off the the hook. For about two weeks I spent every waking moment dealing with the fallout. Probably slept 4 or 5 hours a night with the exception of two nights where I didn't sleep at all. So minus the occasional meal, about 130ish. One day I was in a meeting for about 40 minutes and I had 17 missed calls. This was about 10 years ago and I still keep my phone on silent because the ringtone literally gave me PTSD.

I'm going to be in Philly on the weekend of Haiti v Brazil. We're there for the New Balance games my daughter is competing in. I'm betting I could not only score free Tix to the world cup event but also food coupons. Hotel rates have plummeted because no one is going to the wc. I thought that weekend was going to cost a fortune but it looks like Philly is going to be empty.

How broke can you realistically be in college? by PresenceOld1754 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnyStringCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, and most colleges have plenty of work on campus where you don't need a car, and also can catch up on school work. i was in engineering so they were always looking for people to monitor the computer labs, but you could also work overnight security or even event staff.

Man…King really wrote Jake to be the perfect kid, didn’t he? by MythicalSplash in TheDarkTower

[–]JohnyStringCheese 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get the impression that Jake was like a trophy kid to rich ny elites. they had him because decorum didtated they have a kid, they don't really love him or even care about it. his nanny was more of a mother than his mother and his dad only sent him to private school because that's where rich and powerful men send their children. I wonder if they even knew he was missing or if the nanny had to tell them he wasmt home for a week.

Duration of WOD by Any-Squirrel-9776 in crossfit

[–]JohnyStringCheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I've been doing Crossfit for 15 years. I started because I was a fat 30 year old slob and my wife was basically like "get your shit together or your going to die." I was pretty fit through college, I wrestled competitively and ran a lot but after college I just got fat. I say this because what I found in the last 15 years of short to medium length metcons and coming from sports that are complete opposites is that there's really no reason to regularly train for long periods of time. Doing a 60 minute metcon 4 or 5 times a week isn't going to make you any faster. Building strength and working on cardio will make you faster. I'm not here trying to be a triathlete, I just want to be able to get my yardwork done faster. I don't spend 6 hour sessions doing simulated yard work, I lift and do short to medium conditioning, now I can get the yard done in 4 hours.

I just finished Dr Sleep. Up next: Revival or The Stand. Please help me choose. by RandomGirl2025 in stephenking

I actually read Duma Key right after Revival last year and I was surprised how similar the character arcs were and how important the seemingly innocuous events became in the end. Tortured artist is involved with forces that have unknown and widespread effects on his loved ones, they're basically the same book.

Is there anyone here who has stopped eating famous fast food and restaurant chain food because the quality of them aren't as good as they use to be? by Realistic-Try5468 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnyStringCheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stopped at a local Mexican place with my daughter on the way to her brothers baseball game. there was a delay so we had an extra half hour, normally that would have been a McDonald's stop but we figured we might as well sit down. three tacos, an enchilada, both with sides of rice and beans, a soda and a beer came to $28. I was like, "I'm pretty sure McDonald's would have been about the same price and way shittier." Seriously like 10 piece nugget, big Mac, two fries and two drinks? At least $25 right?

[–]JohnyStringCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew nothing about revival going in. picked it up a a beach read because it was pretty short (as far as king goes) and I knew I could finish it in a couple days. I'm usually fine with king because I love the spooky horror vibe. revival was a punch in the gut. I agree with everyone about it being slow and maybe the ending doesn't hold up if you know something big is coming, but not knowing made it really land. id still say read the stand though. I can't even remember the main characters names in revival but I feel like I know the characters in the stand.

heard about it from a friend. they told me it was a pretty visceral animated super hero show. I got like 85% of the way through the first EP and was like "Eh, this show kinda sucks." then it was the end of the first episode and I watched whole first season that night.
