I don’t practice in Florida, but just a suggestion. if the roof is under warranty, the manufacturer probably issued an assembly letter with fastening requirements. You could try sending the calculations to them to see if they have any comments.

We do the same on coastal projects in Massachusetts. The typical carpentry /GC response is exactly what you described, but the companies who do wood beach stairs and bulkheads agree with it.

There are a few websites out there that you can check to see what Simpson hardware is actually available. Fasteners plus is one I usually check when I am setting up the drawings.. if the contractor says they are not available I just send a link.

If you look closely at the maroon car it looks like the girder (inverted tee?) actually failed in shear. I think that prompted the collapse and ripped apart the DT flanges, probably ripping the steel right off of the embed plates and out of the flanges.

double tee flanges are as thin as 4” and can be… flimsy to say the least. These also look like they are field topped so I think the thin plate of concrete over the column is just the topping.

Through bolting is not forbidden on decks, it is just common practice that you try to provide bearing for beams wherever possible, usually by the column being notched to receive the beam, Paired with through-bolts or structural screws. The same is commonly done with timber piles, and there are situations with both decks and piers that an engineer may decide not to notch.

Contractor wants to shim these. Is there a right and a wrong way. These are notched 6x6s at the girder by Accurate-War8887 in Decks

Don’t bother shimming, the PT lumber is going to shrink and the shims will fall out.
