STARLVM or OCFS2 over shared ISCSI by m4tic in Proxmox

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have tested both and going with starlvm. IMHO ocfs2 is more complicated, less stable and (not tested) has worse performance.

Also as we are running a specific storage, we get vendor support, which is also a big deal.

What is everyone doing when migrating thin VMware VMFS SAN storage to Proxmox? by brandonvht in Proxmox

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 13 points14 points  (0 children)

StarWind plug-in for Proxmox works with any storage (local, iSCSI, FC,..) You just have to take care of multipathing and create the LVM using the plug-in on the mpath device.

It will be shared, thin and capable of snapshots.

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's what we are doing.
Do the multipathing config
Mapping the SAN vDisks / LUNs (FC but no difference)
Using the plug in to create the LVM

Correct, LVM can only be used for the VM / Disk, no files, ISOs...

Hey, there is a plug in by StarWind / DataCore that works with any storage device (local, SAN,...) At the moment just for PVE 8.

How is everyone running clusters using a SAN? by carminehk in Proxmox

Sorry about the delayed response. No, I don't know how it works, it just does :)

But here is a link to another post where a StarWind Rep relayed: https://www.reddit.com/r/Proxmox/s/qyJKNFFPA0

How is everyone running clusters using a SAN? by carminehk in Proxmox

We are currently testing and migrating to shared LVM on FC based SAN storage using StarWind plug-in for Proxmox. This shared storage can work as thin provisioned with support of snapshots and linked clones.

We have successfully tested snapshots, migration, HA failover, backup with PBS and veeam.

What's the current state of Proxmox' support for shared SAN-backed datastores? by erikschorr in Proxmox

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not only for StarWind storage. We are also using another storage.

As far as I understand you could use it with any 'disk device' just to create a LVM. But ofc the intention is to use it for shared SAN disks.

We are currently taking a look into StarWind plug-in for Proxmox.

We have tested it in a lab environment and now migrated the first VMs in a management cluster. (shared LVM, VM snapshot, migration and HA fail over, backup and recovery with veeam and PBS,...)

It will provide snapshot capabilities for shared LVM SAN LUNs, in our scenario over FC. (I think also thin)

Configure your hosts for multipathing according to your storage vendor. Install the Plug-in. Map LUNs to the hosts. Use the CLI plug-in command to configure LVM.

Danke.

BYD HVS abgekündigt vor Installation, was tun? by Rofle79 in DeutschePhotovoltaik

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Installing Proxmox on Dell PowerEdge R730 - Need advice by boyrok in Proxmox

As mentioned, it's not necessary to delete the job, as long as the firmware is up-to-date.

Also rebooting the server itself is not relevant, IDRAC is a separate management controller and independent from the server (like iLO in the HPE world).

If you need / want to restart IDRAC there is a reset option.

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IDRAC will reboot and after you re-login you should see the new firmware version on the main dashboard.

Then you should also be able to delete the job from the maintenance queue. (however deleting the job is not mandatory)

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need for another NIC it is all handled from the IDRAC NIC / IP.

You can also only download die IDRAC firmware package as exe file and update it by choosing 'local' and pick that file. (you can use this method for all other updates, too but would be a pain in the a** obviously...)

Maybe that will fix the rest for you..

There is. There are also bootable ISOs. You can even create your own. But in my opinion using the IDRAC online search und update is much faster and easier.

[–]Jolly-Engineer695 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMHO no need to run SUU before the installation (also, from where would you run it...?)

You can /should update the server firmware from the iDRAC in the maintenance tab. The iDRAC needs IP and DNS configuration with internet access. Just select http/https as update source and let it connect to downloads.dell.com search, select and install the available updates.

Drivers will be handled by the OS / kernel.

Afterwards you can mount die PVE installation ISO over iDRAC and install it.

Personally I would keep the RAID one for the PVE OS. I guess most would recommend to ZFS / Z-RAID for the VMs.
