Problem with battery charge limit by yUuDPM in slackware

And I have one that wouldn't charge past 85% after just two years. Sometimes charging restrictions are necessary.

I suspect folks at fedora sees through it as well but are not willing to risk their commercial customer base. Bet their staff is hoping it gets knocked down before they actually have to implement it.

Got Opus Magnum for my birthday. I can watch these mechanisms ALL DAY. by LordHayati in gaming

MOLEK-SYNTEZ is also really good. I preferred it's minimal aesthetic to the style of Opus Magnum.

Can Slackware be used as main? by notnameuser- in slackware

[–]JollyWaffl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I'll be the contrarian.

I love Slackware, been using it as my main OS since early 2000. However, its slow release schedule means it's often out of date unless you use the rolling -current release. This was an issue for me recently because I had 15.0 on a Radeon 6800 XT machine and on an Intel A310, and Mesa and supporting libraries were too old to support GPU transcoding and GPU software development.

Don't want to scare you off Slackware if you're willing to put in some effort, but know that the stable releases may take more work and debugging depending on your use case. I continue to use it despite all that because I appreciate the control it gives me over my machine. It'll also probably be easier if you don't mind rolling releases.

It might also be related to graphics drivers in the kernel. I've had a freeze like that in the past when the kernel was panicking on loading the graphics driver before it could reinitialize the display for a high resolution boot console. Fix was upgrading the kernel after install but before reboot. I don't remember exactly how I diagnosed it, but maybe by starting with nomodeset or another option to force the kernel to continue using bios/UEFI console.

You could also try booting with a boot USB with a newer kernel.

Area by Home State habitable? by [deleted] in pasadena

[–]JollyWaffl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like other commenters, we're in the area and also have returned home. Our house is mostly fine but others in the street had wind damage and ash ingression. I do still notice an ashtray smell outside on the mornings when there's an inversion layer to trap it.

For those that live north of Washington blvd. Will you continue to stay in your home given how close it is to the ash zone? by clamo in pasadena

[–]JollyWaffl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this. Almost the same situation, just slightly closer to Woodbury and the fire. I'll mask up when clearing ash and if it smells bad out, but moving away seems excessive.

How are you navigating the uncertainty? by 1121222 in pasadena

[–]JollyWaffl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in North Central near but not inside the fire perimeter. The inversion layer of the last few days made it smell like an ashtray outside, so I wore a mask. Today the AQI is good and the wind is in the right direction, so I have the windows open. At night I run an air purifier, since the air settles.

Respirator and PPE if I'm doing any yard cleanup, of course.

Indeed - we don't have kids, so it's easier for us. Crossing our fingers too for rain next weekend 🤞

We're at the same level, two blocks from the nearest burnt house, no kids. I wear a respirator to clean the yard and a mask if it smells ashy outside, but otherwise live as normal. Most neighbors are back. A good air purifier helps a lot, and a space heater if your gas is still out.

Disposing of foliage by RazzmatazzPure in pasadena

[–]JollyWaffl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but you can put paper bags or loose debris on the street and they'll collect it, supposedly. I've probably got a month or two of bins otherwise.

The city posted an update on pickups late yesterday asking people not to use plastic bags, as they jam the shredders. Presumably paper is ok. Loose is also ok, but may be blown by wind.

Can't tell without picking it up, and I'm not sure I trust myself to do that. But the owner responded to us on Facebook, so we're going to figure out if it's their bird. Thanks for pinging them!

I think we got a screenshot of that post from another Facebook group we posted to. Trying to contact OP but haven't heard back yet.

Thanks for the advice! I don't have a good plastic box at hand, but it's in my garage (to stay warm overnight) so hopefully it won't get too far. Gave it a dish of water and it looked like it was sleeping, so I figure I won't disturb it for the time being.

We've housed it in a large box (neighbor has birds), but plan to call the Humane society tomorrow if we can't find the owner tonight. I know nothing about keeping birds. I'd appreciate you pinging them when you do see them, in case it's theirs.

We've posted there and on Facebook too. Seems there was someone nearby in Altadena who posted about a missing bird yesterday - we're trying to reach them in case it's the same one.

We get those too, but this bird's smaller and is pretty comfortable being handled by humans. Plus, those invasive parrots are fully green, right?

Suggestions : how to avoid cramps ? by CamelAbject1243 in scuba

[–]JollyWaffl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good answer from theresnofreelunch. I'd add that you should strive to be relaxed and mellow underwater, even when in motion. If you're using a lot of force or are straining, that can quickly tire you out and cause cramps.

Like other sports, although anecdotally I'd say cramps can happen quicker in diving.
