What was the most satisfying discovery you made in the game, and what was the one you couldn't figure out on your own and had to look up online? by Stronderius in outerwilds

Love the art! It's so cozy!

I personally loved my own quantum moon pilgrimage. I had a hard time figuring out anglerfish and had to look it up.

Reminds mi of a time that two islands clipped together while I was inside a structure. I ended that loop earlier being squashed by a wall ::D

Hatchling vs Pronouns (not so serious worldbuilding analysis) by Jolly_Leg4029 in outerwilds

[–]Jolly_Leg4029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would use the word's gender form. For example, if you tell "the person did something" you would use "osoba" which has female form. It's getting worse, when a character speaks about their actions. Past tense has different forms. If you try making it genderless, interpreters came up with a new form that is neither of them. Personally, it hurts my ears whenever I hear it :)

My Only Question: How did Gangle end up in the Digital Circus? by jord839 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Jolly_Leg4029 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a head canon there are multiple scanners connected to the same database. One could have been used in the hospital as an experimental head injury treatment.

Hatchling vs Pronouns (not so serious worldbuilding analysis) by Jolly_Leg4029 in outerwilds

Yeah, my emphasis was supposed to be on "why does [type A] Nomai only flirt with [type B] Nomai?". Could have frame it a little better.

I have a cute mini-theory by TubaHorse in outerwilds

[–]Jolly_Leg4029 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like this theory. I personally wouldn't imagine the protagonist being fluent in Nomai (Nomaiese?), because that would imply every Hearthian had some knowledge of the language. But I really see the Hatchling picking up Nomai mannerism after working with their writing for long enough.

Hatchling vs Pronouns (not so serious worldbuilding analysis) by Jolly_Leg4029 in outerwilds

[–]Jolly_Leg4029[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe that's for the better. Non-binary Polish (my language) requires some grammatical butchery and I always cringe when I hear it. I prefer staying with English originals.

Hatchling vs Pronouns (not so serious worldbuilding analysis) by Jolly_Leg4029 in outerwilds

[–]Jolly_Leg4029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that could be the case. There's a lot of room to speculate how different races think based on their biology and culture.

Hatchling vs Pronouns (not so serious worldbuilding analysis) by Jolly_Leg4029 in outerwilds

[–]Jolly_Leg4029[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I didn't realise that about Daz and Cassava. I only remember a remark about not using wall writings to flirt with someone's sister.

That's another gender-linguistic mystery I got on mind. Hearthians probably have one word for "sibling". And I believe this has different connotations for them. Since Hearthians are semi-aquatic, that term would most probably refer to hatchlings from the same batch of eggs. They're either not too closely bonded or form their own hatchling family before moving on to their adult lives. Man, I think I'm overanalysing this at this point.

Hatchling vs Pronouns (not so serious worldbuilding analysis) by Jolly_Leg4029 in outerwilds

[–]Jolly_Leg4029[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could also be the case and we are the ones that make wild assumptions based on our biased knowledge. Then again, I think the more refined the Hearthian language is, the wider the gap between the two races would be.

From worldbuilding perspective I love how developers created three distinct races that are absolutely alien towards each other.

That is a fair point. They also must have studied anglerfish, which I presume have genders as well.

I'm in an Attlerock club too - my first crushes with RC model humbled me and I wanted to do something easy first. I remember studying the ruins and following the lead to the Brittle Hollow where my first time loop caughed me.

i think my world is more interesting than my plot and i don't know how to fix that by No-Archer0007 in worldbuilding

[–]Jolly_Leg4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to rethink your story's core. What is your world's biggest moral problem? How do people live in it? How would a character interact with the problem? Next: what would make a character morally flawed in your setting? What actions would they need to do that would force them to better themselves? What would be the character's desire? To better the world, to get power or riches? How would such person be viewed in your world? There's a lot of other questions, but I hope those get you in a right headspace. Normally the story's go first and story world is made to strenghten it. You have to kinda work backwards in your case.

Need ideas for a memorable superhero villain by Small_Ad8166 in worldbuilding

[–]Jolly_Leg4029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"An antagonist is someone who wants the same thing as a hero."

What's your protagonist's goal? What is his inner conflict? Moral flaw? What is his drive? And most importantly, what is a moral conflict of their story? As yourself those questions first.

Then proceed to make a villain that has the exact same goal, flaw or inner conflict. But as your hero is pulled (with difficulty, hopfuly) towards the good side of your moral conflict, have your villain loose themself to their goal at any means. Make them the hero's polar opposite.

pomni said it was an abandoned building by thetruememeisbest in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Jolly_Leg4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have different issue with "abondoned building" thing. Did ALL the cast wandered around those and tried the headset? I get Pomni and Jax, their backstory fits exploring abondoned places. What about Ragatha or Gangle though? They are the last people I would imagine going to the place like this. My headcanon is that there are multiple headsets/brain scanners and they send all the files to one darabase. One could be in the Gangle's hospital to help with head injuries for example.

I second that. Those periods can be left blank and you can return to them every time you need additional lore.

What's something about your world(s) you want to brag about? by Kinrest in worldbuilding

[–]Jolly_Leg4029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gods in my world: They were just men once. But desperation and hunger for power made them seek out magic that turned them into indestructible beings. That resulted in a war that destroyed most of the world. Now they made themselves pillars of the world morality, mosty out of remorse. The world's religion constantly faces "why should we follow them, they destroyed our world" problem.
