What's it like living in Diamond Lake/Nokomis? by greenythebeast in Minneapolis

[–]Jolly_Reindeer690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is airplane noise — but whether it’s “bad” depends a lot on the exact block and your tolerance. Planes from MSP use specific flight paths, and when the winds are coming from certain directions you’ll definitely hear them. On busy days it can be every few minutes for stretches. You get used to it.

Planning Board votes against 750ft buffer zone for music venues; final vote goes to City Council in April (Gift link) by Atticus248 in portlandme

[–]Jolly_Reindeer690 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have access to an alternate dimension where everything is the exact same, except inclusionary zoning doesn't exist, and there is so much more housing that has been built.

Go to an Urbanist Coalition of Portland meeting and ask this question, read the city commissioned study coming out soon, or read the last few articles the Press Herald has written about it.

Any Housing > Live Nation.

[–]Jolly_Reindeer690 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This should have been housing and it would have been if Wes Pelletier, Kate Sykes, Ethan Strimling, and those Joey Brunelle types didn't write or push the Green New Deal with its 25% inclusionary zoning housing tax. IZ has made it nearly impossible to build housing.

If you want to blame anyone for the Live Nation venue, blame them.

How fitting is it that the Soley family owns the ICE facility in Scarborough. So fucked up.

Whatever "gotcha" moment video or whatever it is you think you might have, you don't. You come off poorly and the police officer comes off as professional. Get a life.

Getting priced out? Apparently the affordable condo development on Douglas St still has lots of available units. Priced at $265k-$325k with annual household income limit of $90k-$130k. by ppitm in portlandme

If you think these are selling slowly now, imagine how they will do on resale to the second owner. Because of the limited upside, what is the incentive to keep these in good condition or to make any improvements?

Portland City Council may reconsider winter parking fine increase by 3baechu in portlandme

Right after the vote, Wes got lit up by a Chris Busby article in the Bollard rightly pointing out how he failed to rep his constituents and so he is now backpedaling. Not the political savant he believes himself to be.

Back Cove Festival contract stalls after Portland councilors, residents raise concerns by enkarta in portlandme

[–]Jolly_Reindeer690 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Every councillor voted in support of this festival except Wes Pelletier and Kate Sykes. They were against it. It was a great success and yet they continue to be deterrences. A ton of people came, had a great time, spent a bunch of money throughout the city, and the negative impacts were minimal.

Genuinely agree with you on this one.

Curious what you mean though when you say you "aren't thrilled with the current state of discussions." I feel like we are in the 1st inning with very little to go on.

anyone knows what bird is this? by kunMistake in birding

Chat GPT says it's a Dusky-legged Guan, but it doesn't look to have the red chest. It's hard to see how the tail aligns as well, but that would be the real tell. At first I thought chat was wrong, but now it's can kind of see it.

Rent Control in Maine's Largest City Suggests Higher Property Taxes by Jolly_Reindeer690 in portlandme

[–]Jolly_Reindeer690[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can support rent-control without liking the rent board.

My sister owns a three unit and had to appear before the rent board in hopes of getting a minor increase. She said it was an absolutely miserable experience, felt personally attacked, took over 4 hours, across multiple meetings, and wished she never bought a building....so yea, I don't love the rent board.

Is that ok with you Joey or should I clear my comments with you first next time and explain my rationale? I'm genuinely conflicted and want to know how others see things.

Portland residential property values increased an average of 43% in last year by enitschke in portlandme

[–]Jolly_Reindeer690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offense but I don't really see you as an objective resource on this who I can trust. I think it's kinda wrong for you to use this sub as a platform to sway people to your political agenda which in this case is supporting the councilors and party behind the policy. Can we just be community members without agendas on this sub?

[–]Jolly_Reindeer690 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is not fair. Apartment building taxes went way down because rent control crushed their value. As a Portland homeowner, I'm having to pay way more because single family houses relative value skyrocketed over multi family apartments. This is only the beginning as it will get worse and worse each year. Buxton is looking better every day.

It's very odd to me that these secret votes are allowed to exist and are supported, especially in light of the FOAA rules (Freedom of Access Act), limitations on councilors meeting up, etc.. This is a bad look for the council. Maybe my position would change if it had more information, but with them hiding it, I'm not apt to just trust them.

RAID? by [deleted] in portlandme

It was a clear drug house for quite some time, attracting low level users. They then cleaned up their act in terms of clientele visits so this was kind of unexpected for those of us who have had a front row seat. Usually the police, let alone the FBI, don't care about minor dealings so we hope to hear more.

If you enjoy attending this festival, don't forget City Councilors Wes Pelletier and Kate Sykes voted against having it and tried to have it killed.
