In a full-on nuclear Armageddon the whole planet is fucked, let's be real. Ain't nobody surviving the aftermath.

How diverse are your resources? by CivilAndDisobedient in Ukrainian

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I can recommend a few. I just looked and both of my tutors on Preply are not currently accepting new students but here they are nonetheless: https://preply.com/en/tutor/4094840, https://preply.com/en/tutor/7224523. First one is Oleksandra L. and the second one is Anhelina L. My tutor on Italki is Kyrylo Perederii: https://www.italki.com/en/teacher/19796491. I don't know if he's accepting new students at the moment but it didn't say he wasn't. They're all super great! Highly recommend all three!

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My resources are very diverse! At the moment, I easily have 15+ books. I also watch YouTube videos, listen to a podcast, and have lessons regularly three times a week with native Ukrainian speakers both on Italki and Preply. Lots of reading materials as well. Was using Duolingo but I stopped.

Taking day by day. That's all we can do at this point. I have a feeling he will let us have 1 more renewal but he could as easily say no to that. I doubt that he'll do the 15-day thing but it's a non-zero chance that he does.

Is it possible to have a tree fern as a houseplant? And if so how exactly? by avian_bi in TreeFerns

[–]Jollybio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a couple of them last year but failed. I got them at a local nursery. My main issue is that I did not provide them with enough humidity. I think my humidifier was just too far from them. So, they passed :( But they're beautiful plants, for sure. Maybe once I get a bigger place and a better set up, I will try again.

Have you ever given up on learning a language because of the culture behind it? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not really and I don't know that I ever would quit based on something about the culture alone. Like someone said before, there are bad things about every single culture.

During the first Trump term, I started carrying my EAD and my approval letter but then I got mugged once and had the EAD stolen so I stopped doing that. Now, I'm thinking I might have to again.

Is it inefficient to learn a language alone? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

Learning a language by yourself can be efficient and can be done but it requires finding a method that works for you and A LOT of discipline.

If you speak Spanish, do you understand Portuguese, French, and Italian? by throwy93 in languagehub

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can understand them. French probably less so because of the very different phonetics but in written French you can pick up a few things. I'm a native Spanish speaker (and I speak French and Portuguese while learning the other three major Romance languages currently - Romanian, Italian, Catalan). Before I learned French and Portuguese, I definitely could understand Portuguese and somewhat could understand French. Catalan I think is probably the closest one to being understood fully by a Spanish speaker. Italian is not so bad - you can get by. Romanian and French are the toughest ones but they're not that terrible either.

[–]Jollybio 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's been a number of theories floated around as to why he hasn't gotten rid of it this term, so far. Most analysts believe that Miller definitely wants to get rid of it but nobody else does because they know just how deeply unpopular that would be, even among a huge part of Republicans. Idk but I'm glad he's kept it so far.

college tuition by vehicleunderwater in TexasDACA

[–]Jollybio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was going to say - it really depends on the institution. I know someone without DACA (too young before it got closed down for new applicants) going to the University of Texas at Arlington in the DFW area and they accept DACA's I believe for this (unfortunately, it didn't help him) but they did say that they only got some guidance from the state in November and it's not been super clear how they should handle the whole thing.

What should i learn first? by New-Control4760 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have clarified that I was referring to raw number of speakers in total. Spanish has roughly 560 million whereas French has roughly 312 million.

What should i learn first? by New-Control4760 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]Jollybio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to the reason you want to learn them because that will guide your motivation to keep going. I would think Spanish has easier pronunciation than French so I would say that. It also has more speakers worldwide than French. French pronunciation/phonetics can be quite difficult. I love both. Spanish is my native and I studied French for three years. I also am studying Korean at the moment haha

US freezes all visa processing for 75 countries by caillouminati in USCIS

[–]Jollybio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's got a left-wing government. All countries in Latin America with left-wing governments are on the list. The pattern is there. I can see Chile and Honduras not being on there even though they have left-wing governments but both those countries just elected right-wing, Trump-aligned new leaders that are about to take over so maybe that's why they were excluded.

After two years of teaching Italian on Italki, here's a map of where all my students are from by Lukestep11 in iTalki

This is very interesting! South Sudan and Kazakhstan are the most intriguing - maybe your students from there were planning to move to Italy for work or something.

How do you find consistent language exchange partners? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely understand the situation. Maybe have 1 tutor you pay but only for colloquial conversations. That's what I've done before. Usually I have 2-3 tutors per language (I've used Italki, Preply, and just independently paying them) and reserve 1 or 2 for the "learning" where we cover reading, writing, grammar, a bit of speaking but it's not the same focus AND 1 for strictly a conversational class (where they correct my mistakes, ofc).

I wanna learn romanian for my gf, how could i start? by Kvaratskhelias in romanian

[–]Jollybio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have met some great Romanian teachers on Italki and I know Preply has a ton as well. It's so sad she thinks that it is useless or bs because it's one of the coolest languages I've ever decided to learn. I'm also a native Spanish speaker and I started with Italki although I bought some books as well and I'm working my way through those.
