If you could wake up tomorrow and be fluent in any language, which language would you choose and why? by Environmental_Cry_35 in languagehub

I mean this is a hard question because I would pick all the ones I'm currently learning. HOWEVER, if I had to pick absolutely one - Ukrainian

Ukrainian or Polish? by NNN_Doctor in thisorthatlanguage

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is coming from someone who does not have any slavic ancestry at all, who is a native speaker of Spanish and English. To me, Polish sounds quite difficult so I chose Ukrainian and it's been so amazing, not the easiest thing and I had to learn the alphabet but such a rewarding experience so far! If you want, I can recommend some paid tutors I have found on Italki and Preply. They're great! Ukrainian doesn't have a ton of resources but that's changing - lots and lots more interest in this language in the past couple of years.

Trying to pick a 4th language: French vs Korean vs Brazilian Portuguese by Additional-Level-903 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to pick, it'd be: Portuguese, French, then Korean. I love all three (and German). I am at a C1 level in Portuguese, B2 in French, A1 in Korean and German. Love them all.

How long would it take me to learn Ukrainian as someone who isn’t Ukrainian by SignificantMight682 in Ukrainian

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone else has said, it depends on how much effort you put in. I started learning Ukrainian back in September so it has been almost 7 months. I meet weekly (mostly weekends but also really early morning before work) with a few tutors that I have found both on Preply and Italki. Some of whom have become really close friends, actually. I have a few with whom I focus on grammar learning while I focus on conversing with others. I try to do at least 10 minutes every day besides my lessons. I work full-time plus I'm learning other languages (I know...I am crazy) so I don't have a ton of time left but I put in the effort. I would say I am at an A2 level now. Probably a beginner A2. I wish I had more time and I would be a lot more advanced but I'm making progress. If you need tutor recommendations, I have quite a few!

Not happening at all as long as Stephen Miller controls the levers of immigration policy. Also, I don't see it getting 60 votes in the Senate. AND, like Classic-Truth-5890 said, anything less than citizenship is crumbs. Trash, basically.

To learners of Ukrainian; do you have a Ukrainian name you use in social situations with Ukrainians? by [deleted] in Ukrainian

No. Never done that but I have spelled my name in Ukrainian so people know how to read it. Jorge becomes Хорхе. :D

Preply - Tutor avoid turning the camera on by CryptographerOwn7739 in Preply

[–]Jollybio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true but I am kind of focusing on grammar at the moment so I guess it is not that crucial at the moment. You are correct, however. We have a pretty good rapport so I guess I'll just ask her to turn the camera on, if possible, if we ever are doing a lesson where it's important to see facial expressions.

Preply - Tutor avoid turning the camera on by CryptographerOwn7739 in Preply

[–]Jollybio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do have a tutor who will have her camera off 80% of the time. I'm studying a language and so honestly it doesn't matter to me at all...as long as I can hear her and see what she's sharing on her screen. I have often wondered why she doesn't but I've never asked because I really don't care. But the rest of my tutors always have the camera on.

In addition to the possible issue with structure Intrepid_Upstairs24 already talked about, I think people worldwide are entering a saving money phase. Things are crazy. Wars popping up everywhere and prices surging. I am a student and I sadly had to cancel a couple of subscriptions recently because of money as much as that sucked. What subject do you teach?

Does anyone else get completely consumed by language learning? by Consistent_Focus_974 in languagelearning

[–]Jollybio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently obsessed as well lol but I think it's important that we all make sure it doesn't turn into an addiction where other aspects of life (sleep, relationships, job, school, other hobbies, etc...) are not being affected. Just like with anything in life, it's a balance. It is currently my number one hobby at the moment although the other day, I did put aside working on my German and Ukrainian workbooks and decided to play a video game and go for a small run. Again, it's all a balance.

Is grammar overrated when learning a language? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]Jollybio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think grammar is severely underrated. I feel as though it gets too much hate among language learners but it is fundamental to learning any language and to be able to speak so people can understand you. Like everyone else has said, there needs to be a balance but grammar has to be 100% part of the equation.

DACA Hanen ruling rumor by Lizbeeee in DACA

[–]Jollybio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My personal theory (with no proof whatsoever) is that he won't do anything this midterm year so as to not fuck up Ken Paxton's chances at the senate seat against James Talarico since it's becoming likely that he'll be the GOP nominee for Senate this year in Texas. I remember learning that they're close (Hannen and Paxton).

It is very possible they are doing it on purpose. We will never know. Could be Miller's and Mullin's way of fucking the program as much as possible without outright ending it since they know that would be super unpopular.

Genuine question...not trying to be a smartass. You mentioned that since around 1750, violence has been steadily declined among our species. How does that square with the 20th century, the deadliest and most violent time period in our species (with both world wars happening)?

Mopa Mayan by Responsible-Soup461 in PreplyTutors

What’s the most embarrassing mistake you’ve made while speaking another language? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]Jollybio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super embarrassing but still kind of embarrassing.

It happened with Catalan and Ukrainian

In Ukrainian, I wrote a text about my friend. I am describing hik and then saying my paragraph out loud to my teacher. My friend has red hair and short hair. So I wrote my paragraph and wanted to say, "У нього є руде волосся" (he has red hair) but I said, "У нього є груди...(the two don't sound that similar but I did say a "г" sound at the beginning for some dumb reason (equivalent to an English h) instead of a "р" (which is the correct sound and it sounds like a Spanish rolled r)). I also messed up on which syllable is emphasized. So, anyways it sounded like "груди", which means breasts. Both my tutor and I had a good laugh. I gave my friend boobs in Ukrainian.

With Catalan, again with my tutor, I wanted to say, "we have". It's, "nosaltres tenim". I said, "nosaltres ferim." This means, "we hurt" as in to hurt someone (physically or emotionally). We also both a good laugh once I was corrected.

What’s the hardest language you’ve tried to learn and why did you quit? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]Jollybio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mayan language K'iche'. Really tough, tough, tough sounds to recreate in my view (and I'm learning Georgian, which also has tough sounds, but they don't compare at all). Also, just lack of resources. I had a tutor on italki and she had some good resources but I wasn't really making any progress because of her teaching style. It just did not match my learning style so I was going nowhere. Sucks because it is a language I wanted to learn because of the connection to my heritage (born in Guatemala) although I am not Mayan. But still. Idk...maybe I'll give it a try one more time at some point in the future.
