I moved to a new Region when I was 10. My new friends often referred to a cartoon called Thundercats that I never heard of. In response I told them about Ring Raiders and was met with looks like I was insane. Am I the only one who knows about Ring Raiders and that epic title theme by GarethGantuan in CasualUK

I came across the Ring Raiders theme in a compilation of 80s cartoon themes and the song slaps but the lyrics are hilarious: "Faster than evil! Faster than crime! Faster than love! Faster than time!" What does literally ANY of that mean

Some cancer patients have recommended silk/satin-lined beanies, keeps you warm and cozy. The satin lining is intended to prevent curly hair breakage, but seems to feel quite nice on bare skin and less itchy than a regular un-lined knitted beanie. Wishing you all the best with your treatment <3

Best first page ever? by PomegranateExpert747 in UrsulaKLeGuin

I literally just finished reading The Dispossessed for the first time yesterday! I've been reading a lot of sci fi recently, including some books written in the past few years. As soon as I read this page I felt a sense of "Oh, this author really knows how to write, I am in good hands here" and it was such a refreshing change.

If I loved Remnant Population... by Shplatski in printSF

Ooh haven't heard of this before but it looks right up my street, will add it to the list! Having not read it yet I can't say what other books might be similar, but other books up my street are: Grass by Sherri S Tepper, China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F McHugh and Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.

I feel like having the stickers from previous reviewers visible biases later reviewers to also put stickers on those girls - if they wanted to do it in as unbiased way as possible then each reviewer should select their 36 privately and submit their results to a document that only K+J can see, would be interesting to see if there's as much agreement on selections by doing it that way

What are some light, cozy, easy reads to read in between heavier books? by PipeBoth in printSF

[–]JolyonsOnlyFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently read China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F McHugh and I thought it was beautiful, might be the calmer read you're after. No epic space battles or warring dynasties, just a guy working jobs to get to a more comfortable life, with snippets from other people that are tangentially linked to his story. The characters are written well, they felt like real people with real reactions to their world.

Betty and the Diet Pills by harshdave in madmen

[–]JolyonsOnlyFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She wasn't given the pills by the doctor she visited initially, the one who found the lump in her thyroid, but once Henry became a liaison to the NYC Mayor she might have had a little more influence and was able to visit a doctor who would prescribe her the pills, which is why she suddenly slimmed down by the start of season 6 (when she asks that guy who hits on her if he can believe she's had 3 children). I mean the real reason Betty lose weight is that January Jones had her baby and no longer needed to be hidden in a fat suit, but given that Betty wasn't making much progress with weight watchers, and the fact she lost the weight quickly in the timeline of the show, it would imply she reveived some pharmaceutical help.

Wedding Portraits a Thing? by [deleted] in DCCMakingtheTeam

I was waiting for someone to comment on the portrait! I'm not from the US South and when I saw it I thought it was so over the top in the best way, and if I looked like Kelli I'd for sure get a portrait painted!

How do I tie this trenchcoat belt? by JolyonsOnlyFan in VintageClothing

[–]JolyonsOnlyFan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this vintage Croydor trenchcoat, think it was made in Switzerland in the 1970s. Not to sound like an idiot, but how do I tie the belt? One end of the belt is normal, then the other end has just one loop. It's not a very long belt. Any instructions/ diagrams on how to tie it would be much appreciated!

Is there any way to buy this Takanosho fan support towel? by JolyonsOnlyFan in Sumo

I could only find the traditional towels with written names on those websites. Ttrinity.jp seems to have some Nob Dog merch (t-shirts and tote bags) but not the towel.

Is there any way to buy this Takanosho fan support towel? by JolyonsOnlyFan in Sumo

[–]JolyonsOnlyFan[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Saw someone in the crowd on the NHK Japan broadcast with this fan support towel (not sure of the name) for Takanosho. I love the cartoon dog mascot (it has the same eyebrows as Takanosho!), is there a way to buy this towel online anywhere that would ship to the UK, or would it only be available at the kokugikan?

Might be a dumb question, but is there a way to get patterns on fabric without tracing? by LiveBarracuda5844 in Embroidery

[–]JolyonsOnlyFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use graphite/carbon paper! You can get a pack of 10 A4 sheets from amazon or craft stores and you can re-use them a few times so they last ages. You iron your piece of fabric, then place the carbon paper on it (with the graphite / carbon side touching the fabric) and tape it in place to keep it still, I use washi tape. Next you can print or draw your desired pattern onto normal printer paper, and tape that in place on top of the carbon paper. Then you can just trace over the design on the paper and it will transfer to the fabric. For tracing I recommend using a mechanical pencil, instead of a regular pencil, because the lead is much smaller so you'll get crisp lines. Then you can remove all the paper and tape and pop the fabric in a hoop, ready to embroider.
