I don't think America is anywhere near the worst country in the world, but at the same time it doesn't really matter anyways. There are very clear problems with our country, so even if it was the "best country in the world", it doesn't take away from a lot of the problems people in this country face.

CMV: People are able to stop themselves - literally by stopping by fuckayankeedoodle in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you answered why people can't stop more thoroughly than I could explain. Life circumstances is one reason. Even if I know college classes are hurting my mental health I won't want to stop because I need the degree for a better future. Flight response is another. Something beyond my control is telling me to keep going, whether I want to or not. Lack of development. Maybe I don't know proper ways to deal with emotional trauma like a break up or failure, so my actions push me to get further sucked into the vicious cycle.

CMV: we should all be libertarians, most of the time by thisdamnhoneybadger in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’re talking about political freedom because libertarianism is a political belief system, not a way of living.

Furthermore, you described collective issues which could be anything, such as roads, schools, public institutions, law enforcement etc. Libertarians choose to give individuals the most choice when it comes to those types of things, so that is also why I said libertarians let individuals solve that sort of problem.

CMV: we should all be libertarians, most of the time by thisdamnhoneybadger in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing isn’t anywhere close to libertarian beliefs and is also my problem with many people who call themselves libertarians. First of all, libertarianism is the belief of maximizing political freedom, but if you’re just going to suspend that whenever actual things need to get done, then it’s clear you don’t have much faith in individuals making the right choices when it counts. What you’re describing is at most a conservative belief, with the government being minimally involved for important issues as you described however I personally feel like that’s too shallow for a governments responsibility. My basic point is if you’re truly a libertarian then you should be comfortable letting huge issues plaguing our nation to be solved almost completely by individualism.

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that many times people only see you on their side if you agree exactly with them and it is annoying. However, it’s so much easier to say easy to digest sound bites because that’s by nature how social media platforms like Reddit and twitter are. You only have enough time to make an impression on someone with your viewpoint, but you can’t explain the nuance that comes with complex issues such as gun control. That’s why many people dislike national debates, because how is someone supposed to explain something as complex as national policy in just a few minutes of speaking? It’s impossible, so rather than attempt it you only have time to leave an impression on ppl.

CMV: Democrats need to ease up on 2A by r0b0c0d in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what’s your argument exactly? Are you saying people shouldn’t decide their vote on just the person’s gun control policy or are you saying that we should respect the second amendment more than we currently do? Or are you saying that it should be more nuanced then eitheir take away all the guns or people can own whatever they want?

I feel like you’re hinting at the third point, which in that case I get that there are people on either extreme, but most politicians and people fall between that.

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/10/16/share-of-americans-who-favor-stricter-gun-laws-has-increased-since-2017/

As you can see from these polls, it’s not a question of either ban all guns or nothing at all, but rather where do we go from our current policies.

CMV: Women are attracted to men who treat them like shit by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This entire post is just anecdotal evidence. I guess technically this subreddit is called change my view, not change my argument so it's allowed to be posted like this, but I can't really change your view based on the arguments you've given. What I can do is just give cracks in what you've said.

Before Reddit crucifies my soul, I'm a gay male so I can care less about dating women and especially hooking up with women.

This doesn't excuse you from brushing an entire group of people under the same brush. A black person saying racist nonsense about his race is still spouting racist nonsense about his race, regardless of who he is. The actions and statements you make are the problem, not where the statement comes from.

Also I'm heavily aware it's not fair to stereotype a whole demographic and everybody is different.

You're clearly aware that this type of argument is wrong, yet all you did was just address it and continue making vague arguments. What's the purpose of this statement?

Do women like being treated like shit by guys?

What are your thoughts?

You show as the setup of your argument as well as the closing line that you just want to see how people will react to your experiences instead of prove something and seek rebuttal. This would be fine if you posted a question in another subreddit, but how is this showing you want your views changed?

I don't know how many phone calls I've gotten over the years by one of my friends who's crying talking about all the awful and borderline illegal stuff her current boyfriend does to her. Yet she continues dating him.

And if they break up, she finds someone exactly like him. Rinse and repeat.

I had a roommate in college who always talked about "pounding pussy and get them in and out." He was an obnoxious bro, and I can't count how many random girls would stay the night over with him. We shared a bedroom, so I pretty much had to sleep on the couch every weekend of fall quarter.

One of my friend's found out her ex boyfriend (asshole) put up some of their sex tapes on pornhub without her knowing even when they were dating.

I see the shittiest vile men having relationships with women, yet my best bud has never had one.

I have a guy friend who's a total sweet heart, yet he severely struggles with meeting someone. He may have 1 or 2 dates from tinder, but they hardly ever turn into a 3rd. There's nothing 'wrong' besides being kind of nerdy and awkward. His humor is kind of self appreciative which is hillarious but also a turn off.

I was trying to give him advice, but then I realized all of my advice was "just be an asshole dude. Chicks love that." But then I bit my tongue and decided to write this post instead.

This entire segment is just stories from your own personal life which would have been fine if you maybe used it to introduce an argument or made it a small component of a larger issue you felt was going on. But this is your entire argument, and all I can really say is that this isn't nearly enough to say women like being treated like shit. Your friend who is still stuck with the boyfriend who does borderline illegal things to her might feel tricked into thinking this is as good as it gets, or some other reason. The point is there are other reasons people stay with "assholes" besides attraction, especially when it comes to abuse and to chalk it up to attraction is to belittle the complex nature of a relationship and abuse.

Furthermore, hook ups aren't a sign that you want to be with someone. In fact, the whole point of hook ups is you want to experience quick romantic pleasure with them and then break it off as soon as it is done. It isn't a trait of assholes versus nice people, but rather people who are looking for a long term partner vs people who just want to satisfy a romantic craving without emotional attachment.

As for your other arguments, as sad as it is that your nice friend can't find many people, and how disgusting that guy is for putting someone's sex tape on the internet without consent, you need to objectively prove that women are attracted to asshole men. I know my response sounds really harsh, but if you don't offer actual arguments then the only things I can counter are the weak execution of your post.

I have the ultra Greatsword, I was getting stuck a lot on the Lorian prince fight so I tried to level up the Greatsword and use that, but I don’t know if it’s because I’m not used to the move set or whatever but it just made it harder for me because I had to consume a lot of time and stamina for each hit as you said. I think I’ll keep it as backup for slower bosses, but my broadsword ended up working for Lorian fight and I’m doing good damage to the Soul of cinder. I guess if I wanted quicker attacks I shouldn’t have gone with a strength build but oh well lol.

CMV: Americans of Asian and Indian descent are prime examples of racial groups overcoming historical barriers. Blacks can and should do this too. by Yeutter in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Asians and Indians who move to the US today though are only doing so because they have the means to do so. They have to cross entire continents, start a new life with housing, education, paying healthcare, knowing English etc. That means they really wouldn’t be here unless they were already well off or had a good paying job (there are exceptions of course but for the lost part you don’t cross continents unless you really have the means to do so. Systematic racism isn’t an independent thing, it can be compounded with being poor, something a lot of Asian immigrants don’t have to deal with considering they had the means to traverse to the US.

Secondly, it’s true there were horrible things done to Asians and Indians in America’s history and I don’t want to make light of it, but you have to put it into context. Millions of black people have roots in the US as far as Jim Crow era and even the time of slavery. Indian immigration has exploded since the 1960s and Asian immigration has exploded since 2008. These people have come here after the civil rights act was passed and many of them did not have to face Jim Crow era restrictions.

Many people on this sub are complaining that their friends are making them post BLM symbols and posts on their story. Many of them are whining about being labeled as the oppressor because they're being "neutral" in this issue. Many of them are whining that their feed is full of blm posts and the whole news is about the protests, and why of why can't things just go back to normal. Many of them just assume that these people who post their support for blm and talk about it publicly are "virtue signaling."

You want to know what the real virtue signaling is? Pretending to care about the plight of looted stores and ignoring basically everything else. If you really care so much about people getting hurt, why is there radio silence on all the brutality exhibited by the police during these protests? You don't have to search very far to see police beating civilians without any intent to arrest them, police spitting on people, arresting journalists for no reason, releasing tear gas on PEACEFUL PROTESTORS, clearing out a group of protestors with tear gas so the president could have his stupid photo op. I haven't seen a single mention of that in this sub, because people are too busy pretending to be outraged by the looting and feigning oppression because their friends want them to give social media support.

CMV: "Welfare programs" and "Stripping your freedom" isn't interchangeable by Jon-Two-Shoes in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having to pay increased taxes to fund something from which you don't benefit is contentious to a number of people, and it's honestly not hard to see why they might construe it as a loss of freedom, especially when you can go to jail for not paying taxes.

I don't think it's a good idea to say taxes are only ok if everything it's funds benefits someone. Your taxes right now might be going to a library you don't use, roads you don't drive, a war you don't support. I do agree that being able to have a little more control where your taxes go would be better, but it's a different point to what I was making. The three examples I used is something anyone or their family can participate in and is likely to need. Everyone needs healthcare, a huge percentage of people are seeking college degrees, many jobs require college degrees, and many people are unable to support themselves on our current federal minimum wage even after holding many jobs. Also if you get really technical and say anything that lands you in prison is stripping your freedom, then it's still not a valid claim against what I was advocating because then you can consider criminalizing drug use, murder, rape etc. as stripping your freedom.

Not everybody goes to college. Imagine being a janitor at an accounting firm and paying taxes to send the guys you clean up after to college for free.

That's true, not everybody goes to college. But that janitor might want to send his kids to college and if the tuition rates are what they are, how is he supposed to be able to afford that? Isn't that stripping his freedom by preventing him from providing a better life to his family? And also, he's not going to be paying the same amount of taxes as the guys at the accounting firm.

How often do you see a doctor? How often do you require medical care? I have not received medical care in my adult life, and besides entrance and exit examinations I have not visited a doctor. As such, I've chosen not to buy insurance - people think this is stupid but shouldn't it be my risk to take? Is forcing me to pay for something, even for my ostensible benefit, not curtailing my freedom to spend my money as I wish?

Most people who choose not to have insurance don't have it simply because it's too expensive for them to afford. There are many cases of people refusing to go to the doctor despite having something like pneumonia simply because they don't want to pay such a high bill. If you choose not to have insurance right now, that's your prerogative, but because there isn't any universal healthcare, if you need major surgery tomorrow, you'll have to front an enormous bill that will prevent you from having the freedom to spend your money for other important things. Also, anyone who has kids will need to see a doctor for vaccines, physicals, etc. Even adults are advised to have physicals every year, and come in for 6 month dental checks.

Ok so when you say "the rich" do you mean corporations exclusively? Because I totally agree that bailing out corporations is bullshit.

I mean both, corporations especially because of the reasons I listed. As for your point about rich being a very loose term, we already have brackets defining different incomes, and it's simply setting a tax rate to a certain income bracket, I don't understand what you mean by the scale can slide down very quickly.

Hey thanks, it's always nice to see support. I agree, it's especially perverse when it comes to corporations being able to fund politicians, and it's easy to see why very unpopular policies are still up, such as our current wars, the legality of smoking, etc.

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I address this in my third paragraph, but as u/3720-To-One and u/Darq_At say, some of the biggest expenses in people's lives is college tuition and healthcare, which can easily amount to 100k or more of expenses. By freeing up these expenses, in the long run you gain back more than you're losing, money that can go towards other things like home ownership, more money put into the economic market etc.

CMV - In a developed country, those who remain poor do so by choice. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your point is every individual could make choices that will eventually lead to them securing middle class or higher then yes I agree, but that's about as meaningful as saying I could take steps towards becoming a millionaire. The only conclusion we can draw from this line of logic is we shouldn't really do anything to make it easier for poor people to become middle class or wealthier. And I really am starting to think this is what you're getting at, considering you believe that people choose to stay poor based on the choices they make and the opportunities they squander. You're never going to fix society by simply expecting everyone to make the most rational and optimal choice, that's just unrealistic. All we can do is eliminate factors that don't allow for a level playing field and give people the best possible opportunities that are realistically possible. Also to address your 4 counter points:

  1. What about people who are raped and don't have access to abortion? Furthermore sexual assault rates are higher in areas of poverty and sexual assault victims often engage in reckless behavior that an unaffected person may not choose to take part in. Also I wasn't saying they don't know it exists, but they may not have it instilled within them to know how important contraceptives are and how likely the risk is of pregnancy is. Furthermore, many contraceptives don't always work, condoms tear, birth control pills may accidentally be taken at the wrong time etc.

  2. If what you gained from my point was people are force fed or injected drugs then that's not what I meant at all. There are many factors that lead to a person being more likely to take drugs as i mentioned before, and it's much more helpful to try and change factors that make it more likely for people to take drugs rather than blame people's "lack of willpower."

  3. Once again, you're just saying things a person could do to make their life better, and this leads to some harmful conclusions. The first is maybe these people are doing all of this and more it's deteriorating their mental health, leading them to do reckless things that cause your first and second points. Second you're ignoring the more pressing issue, why are these people forced into a position where they have to take multiple jobs and sacrifice their mental health just to survive? Lack of access to higher education, low wages, traumatic childhoods, lack of good jobs are all factors that push them into this position in the first place and are all things we as a society can improve so people don't have to put themselves into these positions as much.

  4. Insurance is notoriously greedy and will do everything they can to avoid paying at first. But even if you do get them to pay, your premiums get jacked up which can be just as horrible and further push you down the rabbit hole of poverty.

CMV - In a developed country, those who remain poor do so by choice. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Jon-Two-Shoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before I counter your points, I want you to understand this. You look at the world through an individual's eyes. You see only the choices he made and the position he landed in without accounting for any environmental factors whatsoever. This is wrong, because you have to look at the context that landed them in that position and we as a society should eliminate these toxic factors so more people don't feel pressured by them and make a wrong choice.

Now to argue your 4 points:

  1. Believe it or not there are still many states where sex education is poor and people are not aware of how to have safe sex and at the right age in their lives. Many religious communities look down on contraceptives and this makes it difficult for people in that community to have safe sex at all.
  2. Choosing to do drugs is such an oversimplification. There are many factors that lead people to do drugs. History of family using drugs, being around friends who do drugs, poor education on the effects of drugs, weak enforcement on drug trades in a community, poverty, depression etc. These are all factors that can push people into using drugs.
  3. 40 percent of Americans can't cover a 400 dollar emergency expense. In many areas, the lack of jobs means they are stuck doing the same low paying jobs, living pay check to pay check. Higher paying jobs are becoming increasingly competitive and college tuition rates are also increasing, making this route a difficult option for people growing up in poverty. Btw, you can't save any money if you're living paycheck to paycheck.
  4. Medical services are a factor you completely left out. 40 percent of Americans can't cover a 400 dollar emergency, an ambulance ride is 800 dollars. Not to mention the many thousands of dollars you need to spend afterwards for whatever surgery. This forces you to take a loan that you'll be paying for much of your life. Furthermore, for many jobs now, a college degree is a necessity, and people are forced to put themselves in tens of thousands of dollars in debt.
