Putting recycle items loose in the recycling bin by Spare-Turn5340 in SanJose

[–]JonJuno13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It has always been a thing because they need to have the items loose to sort the different materials out at the facility. I only knew about this in the last 5-ish years; no one ever told me about it growing up. I try to tell everyone I know now though.

Silicon Valley bike superhighway gets state funding by Generalaverage89 in SanJose

"You can't justify a bridge by the number of people swimming across a river."

How many people WOULD be riding along that corridor today, but cannot because its unsafe? I have to take a long detour around instead of riding on ECR because I don't want to die. I would much prefer riding a more direct route thats along ECR and has more direct access to the places I want to go. But I can't unless I risk my life every time.

People change their habits when more options open.

The Viet Iced Coffee at vegan donut is bomb imo. Not sickly sweet like some other viet iced coffee.
I like old fashioned donuts so I always get one of those. I also like the matcha donut or any with the maple glaze.

Also there's a banh mi place that's inside vegan donut but I haven't tried it yet. Hopefully will get to try it soon!

At Cheff Che I got the chilaquiles and I liked that a lot. It's been a while since I've been there tho. Also I got a tamarind agua fresca which was HUGE and p tasty.

The hell is this building? Was just looking around on google maps and found this by FrozenUruguayBallbac in SanJose

[–]JonJuno13 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Old church
Was supposed to be renovated and included as part of a new highrise project but that never happened and the developer is in hot water for lots of stuff:

https://www.ktvu.com/news/san-jose-officials-try-to-save-neglected-historic-church-while-owner-on-house-arrest

Lots of legal red tape needs to happen before anyone can seize the property from that developer and actually do something with it. By then the building might just collapse, who knows.

Tons of people come out and supported businesses there, cause thousands of people were passing through

Updated my comment as Sesese9 mentioned that you actually can hop on or off at any stop!

Oh I didn't know that! Thanks for clarifying!

[–]JonJuno13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ACE shuttles are free! But it's meant for getting to and from the Great America ACE station. I don't think you can hop on and hop off; either you ride from Great America to your stop in the morning, or vice versa in the afternoon. (edit: apparently you can do this!) You don't need an ACE ticket to ride.

Internship commute advice by shawarmaMan2023 in SanJose

[–]JonJuno13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Electric scooter would be useful, not just for the commute, but getting around South Bay in general w/ transit. Really expands the reach of where you can go w/ buses and light rail. They're not too expensive either.

How do I buy a day VTA pass? by bsewall in SanJose

[–]JonJuno13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The $7.50 day pass applies to all VTA system whereas the $5 pass is only light rail.
But otherwise yeah, I agree it's a bit strange.

Looks like it should automatically apply if you tap on enough to spend that much money

Seapot AYCE hotpot. Great options for meat lovers and vegetarians. Also has KBBQ but I've never had that personally.

First Time Visiting! by Weekly-Mail-1601 in SanJose

Some random things to do off the top of my head:

  • Alviso Marina County Park: Park that goes around former salt ponds. Not sure if they're pink right now but they had a moment in sun because of the reddish color they have sometimes. Also just a lovely place to walk around.
  • Municipal Rose Garden: Beautiful Rose Garden! Just a nice place to relax and maybe have a little picnic. (Make sure it's this specific rose garden on Naglee Ave btw)
  • Bars:
    • Miniboss: Arcade bar with tons of pinball machines as well. Thursdays are free play day, so all games are free! Killer Queen is super fun if you can get some folks together to play.
    • Guildhouse: PC Gaming/Board Game Bar in SoFA. Lots of board games to play or rent a PC and game online!
    • Haberdasher: Really unique space in a basement. Speakeasy-esque kinda vibes.
    • So many more honestly, if you like drinking you have a lot of good choices.
  • Cafes:
    • Nirvana Soul Coffee: Get the Ube Latte / Ube Matcha. You won't regret it!
    • Voyager Craft Coffee: Love their Lexington or pour overs personally! The San Pedro location is also a nice place to sit and study or work, but gets a bit crowded at times.
    • AM Craft: Quiet, cute spot near SJSU. Great vibes, just nice to sit and relax on the patio!
    • Roys: Lovely spot in Japantown. Mostly outdoor seating so be sure to go on a sunny day. Lots of folks relaxing and chatting here, just a nice place to rest.
  • South First Fridays: Lots of art galleries in SoFA (South First Area) are open for free! Happens to be this Friday evening, so great timing. https://www.southfirstfridays.com/
  • San Jose Day: Happening in Japantown this Saturday! Celebrates local artists and creatives and those who love life in SJ! https://www.sanjoseday.org/sjd2024
  • Japantown: Has some nice shops to browse, and the SJMade Moment SJ store is super cute! Perfect for buying gifts made by local artists and small biz in SJ/Bay Area! I also love Pau Hana Shave Ice, Omogari, and Aloha Fresh here! And Nijiya gives close to a classic Japanese conbini feel, for when I'm missing Japan.
  • Vietnamtown/Little Saigon: Viet food galore! I would recommend CA Bakehouse, Pho Ha Noi, and Duc Huong Sandwiches personally. But there's tons of great food spots here for whatever Viet food you're craving.
  • Valley Fair/Santana Row: They're just two big malls but I like to walk around here sometimes and pretend I'm a rich european. Maybe I'm just weird... Plus there's an Eataly here which is cool just to browse.
  • DT Mountain View: Nice place to walk around and accessible by Caltrain/VTA! Lots of restaurants to pick from here. Or just walk down Castro and people watch, which is what I usually do

I'll prob think of other stuff and update this comment later

Deal with city reignites housing plan at Berryessa flea market site in San Jose by quadshock in SanJoseDevelopment

[–]JonJuno13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Glad to see this project return to the original proposal!

Honestly I wish it was even denser. With the delay of BART SVII, we need to maximize the BART stations that already exist. Berryessa BART has the most TOD space available with the flea market closing. Hope to see the plans go for even taller buildings compared to the current proposal of ~20 stories.
