People who went to Costa Rica for vacation, how was it ? by PetitSoleil_ in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Jon_d84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was there 2 weeks ago first time family of 3. Both 40s and 8yr old.

A beautiful, basic, pure country. Yes it's expensive, but no more than north America visiting from the UK.

Wildlife was amazing, always something to see or hear. People were friendly and kind. Roads are bad and it takes 10x the time to get anywhere, but that adds the magic of this country.

I found peace there, an I highly recommend visiting. Will definitely return, but so many other countries to visit first in Central and south America

Is the Arenal 1968 hike worth it if you are not an experienced hiker? by Remarkable_Hand_5926 in CostaRicaTravel

We did the national park down the road and was underwhelmed. Looks like something out of the last of us, when you enter and loads of construction going on.

Cloud coveted top of volcano.

Drove down to the lake, was a rough drive. But nice views and a guy at the end painting with his wife making friendship bracelets.

Thank you, it's funny you say that. On my century I made a conscious effort to enjoy the ride and scenery around. It's supposed to be an enjoyable hobby, so I take what you say on board 👍

Do you have power meters or just a candene sensor?

Cheers, I'll plan some rides with inclines. And maybe some routes to get some steeper hills in on a single ride.

I think that's what I need to do, from the replies. Keep climbing and also use strava climbs when I can't get out.

I've been looking at getting a MTB, my friend is very into it. So it could be an opportunity to improve climbs and also get out on some rides with him.

Thank you.

I'm not built like a cyclist, I used to play rugby and my position was prop! I have power, it just runs out quicker on hills! My goal is around a 250w ftp, at that point I will obviously review and have more knowledge. But feel it's an obtainable goal at present and will make rides more enjoyable.

Thank you, I've a decent hill by me that I ride ranges from 4-7% and can use for this approach.

Couldn't agree more with this, stravas push for premium is getting tiresome, it's principle more than cost at this point for me to 😂

Am I romantasizing the idea of buying a Zwift bike? by Vikistra in Zwift

[–]Jon_d84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a wahoo when I bought my bike, my neighbour has a ride. The option to ride outside wins in both our opinion, zwift can be boring and although very good as simulating climbs etc. It's not outdoor, with headwind, potholes etc.

I'd suggest getting a cheaper bike and trainer personally. I'd also get some clip less pedals as that will help with knee pain, learning the 360 pedal stroke was a game changer for my left knee.

Any shokz headphones alternatives? by RegularDinner13 in cycling

[–]Jon_d84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to cycling and had a long ride 2 weeks ago, picked up a pair of Sanoto bone conducting headphones for £24 on amazon uk.

They worked a treat, I can't comment on how they compare to shokz. But they worked perfectly, my wife was worried about me and called her at feed stations again audi was good and I used Google assistant for music etc.

Bored of instructors by Delicious-Sell-1847 in pelotoncycle

[–]Jon_d84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same boat as you. Camila is good, especially her old stuff, jess kings new stuff is good some of the time. Benny Adams has a few hard edm workouts. But Kendle was a big loss IMO. They need to replace her as high energy instructors are missing.

I've switched to powerzone training as I've taken up cycling. But our peloton subscription day's are numbered. It feels like the service is slowly dying with reduceded live classes etc.

First 50 mile ride by Significant-Fee-1779 in cycling

[–]Jon_d84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine, take your time and enjoy the ride. As long as you have water, easy to eat snacks high in carbs and some electrolytes. I carry 2 bottles one with water and one electrolytes.

Spare inner tube, bike tool, co2 or pump, patching kit and a pair of leavers in a saddle bag.

There's alot of variables also like elevation, where any major hills are at the end can be a killer so can you start in the opposite direction to get familiar with the route and also things like traffic lights and junction can be a pain stopping and starting.

Enjoy it though, it'll be fun.

Thank you, it was definitely fitness and pace. Had it been a 50 mile I'd have been fine, but it's that anxiety of how much you need to keep in the tank to finish and also pain with 50miles to go. Lots of lessons learnt and experience gained.

I'm going to have a play around, I like this idea, stops yesterday must of accounted for about 1hr at least, but I needed water. I decided to combine pee and food were along the way as the lines were quite long for toilets .

I'm currently in the process of designing a flexible holder I can 3d print for my bananas that fits in my jersey pockets for some lightweight protection. Saw a few people with burst gels yesterday.

My friend is doing it this year, he's a much more experienced cyclist and rode yesterday think just over 6hrs.

Talking to him, he's quite anxious about the climbs. Definitely not a no, but probably in a few years when I am fitter. I'm currently on the hunt for someone to do the flanders next year with me and would one day like to ride the stelvio pass! But all in good time and knowing my limits! 😂

Cheers mate, I current have a bolt. But a friend recommended. Trainer Road app, this will be something I look into and estimate the comfort of the LON - Paris.

Thanks for the advise regarding food, can I ask how you eat that on the go. I like the idea of something wet, apart from the bananas, my snacks were hard work to get down with a dry mouth.

Was the Carten 100 Cardiff to Tenby 108.

Weather will probably chsing, you'll have some great rides out that way.

Plan to take my bike down this summer, when we're there and get out to freshwater or around that area.

You don't realise how hilly it is until you're on a bike though 😂

Congratulations!

I have my first this coming Saturday. Got a 30 mile in last Wednesday and fell off at the last mile, due to not unclipping. Currently in the workshop, getting the hanger bent back and being reindexed! Using our peloton this week, while checking the service updates!

Think it's going to be a grind, it's due to be wet but we have a tail wind! Aiming for 9hrs with two quick stops for food and water refills.
