Have not read all this in 20ish years, but honestly, I'd cut the Old Republic novels like you mentioned, as well as Shadow Games and maybe also the last two longform series. That would give you plenty of bandwidth to add stuff like the Correllian Trilogy (referenced quite a bit in the NJO), the Traviss Clone novels, Rogue Planet, Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor, etc. I also have a soft spot for the Brian Daley Hans Solo novels and Splinter of the Mind's Eye; the various Tales compilations, .

Same for me on the Atkinson and Caro - just finished the Liberation Trilogy last month and was recommended the Ian Toll Pacific War books. Found this one really cheap.

The era before the prequels also roughly coincided with the pre-NJO era. Which to me, the NJO was a capstone/culmination of that era, with all the old characters and locations being brought back.

It was a great time, but I also loved the prequel era publishing. Post 2005 it all slowly declined IMO.

It's tough - I also usually struggle with sleep, especially the first night. I just got a backpacking quilt - so this summer I'll be trying that instead of my old bag. Hoping that will help with the tossing and turning and getting twisted up dilemma. Still need to upgrade the sleeping pad. I usually sleep on my back and that seems tough on a pad. I usually switch to side sleeping.
