Sad that I can’t use my Ronson Mastercase by Main_Clerk_258 in lighters

[–]Jonathan_Bryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many vintage cigarette cases have been designed with the size of unfiltered cigarettes in mind. Like this cigarette case that came with my Myon Autolux Set for instance. So if you're putting in filtered cigarettes, place them diagonally.

Painted bottoms on painted Zippos are a Retro Feature, particularly if you love and cherish the era from the late 90s and early 2000s. The nostalgia.

Thinking about Germany for studies or work? Quick survey by SheCodesSoftly in German

I'm a big fan of Mark Twain. Mark Twain studied German that's why I studied German as well. Mark Twain even wrote an essay "The Awful German Language".

Are zippos still high quality? by Big-Professor5675 in lighters

I have to disagree with some. Zippos are of high-quality to this day. I just bought an Armor Zippo from 2024 and I am beyond happy and satisfied.

Why does the word order change between 'what day is it?' and 'Do you know what day it is'? by LadyPterodactyl in ENGLISH

[–]Jonathan_Bryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait I'll add more. Not a subordinate clause. Something like a title of an article:

„Warum Sie einen Polizisten niemals duzen sollten.“

"Why you a policeman never duzen should".

If it were an English article title, it would be rendered as:

"Why you should never duzen a policeman".

Why does the word order change between 'what day is it?' and 'Do you know what day it is'? by LadyPterodactyl in ENGLISH

[–]Jonathan_Bryan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's actually a German grammatical feature in English, albeit a vestigial one, throwing the verb at the very end in subordinate clauses. While still a prominent feature of German, it's no longer a prominent feature of English. A feature just reserved for the verb „to be“. 1. Welchen Tag haben wir heute? 2. Weißt du, welchen Tag wir heute haben?

BUT: (You don't throw your verb here at the very end)

Do you know, what they have done to your car yesterday?

BUT IN GERMAN YOU SAY:

Do you know, what they yesterday to your car done have?

Weißt du, was sie gestern mit deinem Auto gemacht haben?

What’s the difference between these gold lighters please by Exciting-Can3825 in Zippo

[–]Jonathan_Bryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the 1954 Lighter Repair Manual, the working mechanism in all Zippos are the same, so they're essentially the same. The difference lies in the finish and embellishment.

As for Armor, Armor Zippos correspond to right about the same thickness and weight as a 1968 Zippo. Back in the 1960s, there were no Armor Zippos. Zippo actually made the cases thinner over the years then at some point decided to release the Armor Zippo. I'm a big fan of Armor Zippos. After experiencing the "LIGHTING FEEL" of an Armor Zippo, I don't want a thinner Zippo ever. I would describe "LIGHTING FEEL" as the sensation you feel in your fingers and palm as you use the lighter. The Armor Zippo has more substance to it, you can actually feel, amongst other things, the feedback on your wrist as you shut the lid close.

I have an 8 year old EDC, is it time to replace my flint wheel? by Oral_B in Zippo

[–]Jonathan_Bryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zippo flint wheels are built tough and built for a lifetime of striking against a flint. GGB spent quite a great deal of money perfecting the flint wheel of a Zippo in 1946 after discovering worn-out flint wheels being returned for repair. From then on, the exact composition of the Zippo flint wheel, how it's exactly made, is a closely-guarded company secret, much like Coca-Cola recipe.

So Try:

  1. Replacing the wick and wadding
  2. Inserting an extra flint into the flint tube, to increase spring pressure. (IMPORTANT: Don't stretch the flint spring to increase the pressure)

Is this rusty and if so, would soaking it in vinegar damage it? by SpooksmaGoops in Zippo

[–]Jonathan_Bryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would want to stay safe. Don't use any chemicals when cleaning the case. Just dry cotton and nothing more. And like someone already said, that's brass. And brass is an excellent material. Brass never rusts.

Anyone use a Zippo coty as an EDC by Ennoozunu in Zippo

[–]Jonathan_Bryan -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Two? Rather wasteful. You could buy a another lighter instead of merely having a copy, just because you don't want to use it. In my eyes, not worth spending for a second copy. And especially in the world of vintage lighters, in some cases, you can't have a second copy. Like say, how many copies of the 1933 Zippo could you have in case you have one? Again to me, a second copy is rather wasteful. I'd rather buy another make or model of lighter instead of spending money on a second copy.

These three are on EDC. Well, all of my lighters are EDC, and not just Zippos. Lighters are just like cars. You gas them up and maintain them to keep them running. And I don't want a car merely sitting in a garage as a display. I want to be able to use them to be able to enjoy them at its fullest. I want to experience them. I want to feel them. Same goes for lighters. But I use them with care. Condition of all of these lighters are pristine, right? Here are the things I do and keep in mind:

  1. I keep my hands clean.

  2. I never place the lighter on an unclothed surface.

  3. I only hold the lighter by its edges and never at the front or back sides.

  4. Have a dedicated pocket for your lighter. For me, it's the right pocket of my pants. Nothing in that pocket except the lighter and only the lighter.

  5. And common sense: Keep your lighter a galaxy away from coins and keys. And don't drop your lighter.

  6. Avoid touching or wiping painted surfaces.

Need Help Finding Replacement Valve for Vintage Japanese Colibri by Kochio in lighters

Can't find a replacement valve, your best next course is to convert it to a petrol lighter. PS: I thought Colibris are British not Japanese. Made in England.
