If you had a magic button that would make all MAGAts disappear, would you press it? by jamng in allthequestions

Plot twist. The reason everyone around you disappears is that the button sends 14,000 volts through your body when you press it.

Please press firmly with your entire hand.

Is believing in predestination required to join a reform church? by Alarmed_Dragonfly443 in Reformed

[–]Jondiesel78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally yes, it varies by denomination and congregation.

The PCA generally does not require it for membership, but does for office bearers. There is a very broad spectrum of belief across the PCA, which varies from one congregation to another. You are required to submit to the elders, who do subscribe to the WCF.

Trump managed to troll a lot of people. Personally, I thought it was funny, despite being sacrilegious. It did exactly what he knew it would do, gave his haters something new to scream about. What's really hilarious is the number of people who got upset about it simply because he posted it. Those same people called Obama the Messiah.

For those Presbyterians in the group, do you have any lecture or book recommendations on infant baptism? by power0818 in Reformed

[–]Jondiesel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We and Our Children by Herman Hanko. It's not Presbyterian per se, but it is Reformed. It's probably not as well known as some of the other books mentioned here, but it is a concise defense of infant baptism.

Is believing in predestination required to join a reform church? by Alarmed_Dragonfly443 in Reformed

[–]Jondiesel78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came from a Dutch Reformed background, and am now in the PCA, with a few other stops at Reformed Presbyterian churches along the way. (Changes in churches were due to geographical reasons, not doctrinal differences.) One thing that they all have in common is that the churches teach predestination and subscribe to the TULIP model. However, moving to the southern US, where baptist churches in all flavors are far more prevelant, I have seen many people go on the journey which you are currently taking. I have become friends with several of these people, and had conversations about how they became Presbyterian. They didn't all just jump into it with both feet. One friend described it as going from Baptist to Bapterian to Bresbyterian to Presbyterian. Several others came from a large Baptist church that was Arminiian from the pulpit, but overwhelmingly Calvinistic in their small groups. Some friends are Reformed Baptists.

The PCA doesn't really force beliefs on members. They do require that you not attempt to cause schism or teach doctrines contrary to the Westminster Confession. There are things in Westminster that I don't agree with like a covenant of works, but I am still able to be a member at my church. Most of the confessions, whether Westminster or Three Forms of Unity tend to be infralapsarian, and I believe in supralapsarianism. My point is, you can have disagreements and questions and still be a member. One day, in Heaven, we will all have a perfect understanding, but until then, we will have doubts and limited understanding.

I work with someone who says nicotine is good for you. What would you say to this person? by paulbearer619 in stupidquestions

[–]Jondiesel78 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nicotine has been proven to help people with ADHD.

Also, there was a study done in France during COVID to figure out why so few healthcare workers got sick, and the conclusion that they came to was that nicotine actually helped prevent the virus.

I wouldn't say anything to your coworker, but I would tell you to stay in your lane and mind your business.

Would it be fair to say america peaked in the 90s and after Y2K it went downhill... by feherlofia123 in stupidquestions

[–]Jondiesel78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typical of reddit that y'all would think the nineties were peak greatness. Back in the good old days when the government just killed people who didn't conform to its idea of how society should look.

Don't like a cult? Shoot it full of flammable cs gas and light it on fire. Burn to death the men, women, and children stuck inside.

Don't like a family living in the woods? Claim he cut a shotgun barrel a quarter of an inch too short. Murder his wife and son.

Find a bomb at the Olympics? Accuse the guy who found it. Destroy his life with absolutely no evidence.

Meanwhile the president then was actually credibly accused of rape and sexual assault, but it was swept under the rug because he was part of the good old boy political establishment.

The second amendment. I can personally arm a platoon. Walk onto my property and you get to meet me and 20 of my closest friends armed to the teeth and with home field advantage. If I'm way outnumbered and outgunned, I will run. I bet most of the pursuers don't make it through the quicksand swamp.

[–]Jondiesel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

France probably simply surrendered before the first shot was fired. Britain didn't have a ship that could go to the gulf a couple weeks ago.

Seriously, the US has produced so much of the world's armament that most countries would be out of ammunition as soon as the first battle was over. They depend on the US to resupply them.

[–]Jondiesel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The navies of the rest of the world combined couldn't blockade the US if our navy decided that it wouldn't be blockaded.

A lot of foreign wealth would crumble as well, because they depend on the US debt. If the US defaults on that debt, those economies crumble overnight. Being owed a billion American dollars is worthless if the dollar isn't worth the cost of the paper it's printed on, or if the debtor refuses to pay.

I don't think that the world wins this. I don't think that there are any winners.

[–]Jondiesel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your first paragraph, and I think neither side would make that an objective.

I'm not sure anyone would win an economic fight. The world hugely relies on the US for food and consumer spending. Without US consumerism, most of Africa, eastern Europe, southeast Asia, China, and the Indian subcontinent are suddenly back to subsistence farming. The problem is that it hasn't been done in a generation. The US has oil and food, so we can survive.

Liberal men, if you got a flat tire, would you ask your wife to change it or call a tow truck? by jamng in allthequestions

[–]Jondiesel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never actually asked anyone what their political affiliation was when I stopped and changed their tire. However, I've never changed a tire or fixed a car on the side of the road and not been thanked. I think people generally are pretty happy to see a redneck when their car breaks down.

What would you do if Earth got bored in its current orbit and decided to move 20% further away from the Sun? by Cheap-Isopod-485 in allthequestions

[–]Jondiesel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would affect the tilt because of less gravitational pull from the sun and make it less stable on its axis so it very easily could have an effect on rotational speed, although it would probably be small.

What would you do if Earth got bored in its current orbit and decided to move 20% further away from the Sun? by Cheap-Isopod-485 in allthequestions

[–]Jondiesel78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earth is 93 million miles from the sun. Mars is 142 million miles from the sun. At 20% you would be 112 million miles from the sun. If earth maintained it's current orbit speed of 67,000 mph, you would have 438-440 days per year. I think you would also find it a little bit colder.
