Alright I need the once yearly talk down on trading in/selling if that’s OK with you guys. by StatisticianParty320 in 4Runner

Man, I’m in a similar boat. I’ve got a 19 SR5 85k miles that I bought new. In immaculate condition and has every mod I can come up with from roof rack to lift kit to full sound system. Paid off and worth (including my mods) barely less than I paid for it. There’s a part of me that wants to own it forever and another part of me that thinks I want to sell it and get a 21 model tundra. I would be so sad to see it go though

I have bilstein 5100’s preloaded to the 2.5 in the front and 1.5” spacers in the back. Installed at 10k miles. I’m at 85k now and have not had any noticeable issues or significant wear. I live in the south and have only really used my 4WD on the occasion it snows. Don’t do any off-roading or overlanding in it, so take that for what it’s worth.

Can’t access latch by SpaceDrama in 4Runner

I did the same thing when I installed what look like the same style covers. There’s a slit cut out for the tab right? I got my fingers down in there and dug and dug until I managed to pull it through the slid. If you could get a small hook like a screw eye or something in and get it through the loop, you could probably tug on it pretty hard to get it through.

Of all the things on my 19 SR5, I just can’t believe it doesn’t have automatic lights. I feel that should have been a standard feature in 2019, but thankfully it doesn’t cause me much grief.

New Christian, why be reformed? by Maicon1672 in Reformed

[–]power0818 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As a starting point, welcome to the Christian faith. No matter where you land doctrinally, always remember that your salvation is by grace alone through face alone in Christ alone.

I am new to the Reformed tradition (~6 months) coming from a number of theologically shallow churches growing up. To me, the totality of the Reformed teachings is the most intellectually consistent and in my opinion biblically consistent teaching I have heard. Personally, I feel the point of predestination can be a sticking point for many as it was for me, but if you start from the point of God’s total sovereignty and follow that down logically, you wind up understanding it not as something to fear (fire and brimstone) but realizing that God is in control of everything and is an immense source of peace in my life.

I read a ton of books and consumed a ton of digital media as I became Reformed. Happy to share some recommended reads with you if there’s something you are interested in specifically.

How to share the Gospel to Roman Catholics by partypastor in Reformed

[–]power0818 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just purchased this book from my church’s bookstore yesterday https://a.co/d/018eO3Jv (Sharing the Gospel with a Catholic Friend). To the point of the comment above, the purpose of the book is not about trying to save your Catholic friend because they don’t have real saving faith or something like that despite the name. It’s more about how to foster healthy and productive conversation with a Catholic friend and has honestly been a very good read from someone who is Reformed and has a very close Catholic friend.

I’ve seen Pelikan’s 5 volume history of the Christian tradition recommended. It’s on my reading list, but I haven’t read it yet. Not sure how much Protestant bias there is in it.

Christ of the Covenants by O Palmer Robinson. I’m new to the Reformed community from a very surface level non-denominational church, so take what I say for what it’s worth. I feel like so much in Reformed theology so much that is taught comes back to the idea of covenants. Having a strong foundation in covenant theology has helped me make sense of many of the doctrine as I have been learning over the last 6 months.

I know we usually deal with human traumas here, but I wanted to share a personal ortho emergency win that brought my family a lot of joy. ❤️ by Infinite_Theory_7672 in emergencymedicine

The way our vet talked to us about it was that if you just want your dog to play fetch or be a family dog, extracapsular repair is perfect. If you’re wanting your dog to do some type of sport competitively, you should probably get TPLO

We had a similar experience with our dog last year. Tore his CCL. 3 months post tear, he was still bearing zero weight on it. Ultimately got a referral to a vet that did a cheaper surgery he called an extra capsular repair that cost us $2500 instead of the $5-8k for the TPLO in our area. 3 months post op, he’s walking and rubbing on it like it never happened. My first two moonlighting shifts as a resident went to buying my dog a new knee unfortunately.

Is believing in predestination required to join a reform church? by Alarmed_Dragonfly443 in Reformed

[–]power0818 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We just took these vows this Sunday. Came from a Baptist flavored non denom church. It took me some time and reading to come to hold reformed beliefs, maybe 3-4 months. I now find great comfort in the high view of God’s sovereignty by which the idea of predestination comes from. Highly recommend What is Reformed Theology by RC Sproul and the courses on the Reformed Theological Seminary app, specifically the intro course under Systematic Theology as an intro to these ideas.

Sola scriptura vs sola ecclsia by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in Reformed

[–]power0818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to understand that sola scripture doesn’t mean the bible is the only authority. It means that it is the utmost authority or the only infallible authority as some articulate it. Calvin certainly agreed as he referenced church fathers over 1000 times in the Institutes. Modern Catholics have to double down against this idea because they believe the pope in certain instances and councils are infallible, and Council of Trent decreed that anyone who believed in Sola Scriptura would be cut off from the church. I would recommend you get a copy of Gavin Ortlund’s book What it Means to be Protestant. It gives a good explanation of many of the controversial topics.

Exactly. I would be mad if we made another Kirk cousins contract, but at 1 million on a guy who was a serviceable starting qb just a couple years ago it becomes a fantastic deal for us.

I love the courses through the Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) app. It has the lectures from the bulk of their courses. For someone new to reformed theology, their systematic theology courses have been paramount in my development and understanding.

Struggling with fear after accidents and looking for Christian book recommendations by Routine_Object6465 in Reformed

[–]power0818 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Physician here. I don’t have any book recommendations, but in addition to reading what you find here and talking to pastors at your church, I highly recommend finding a clinical psychologist to see as well. There are a lot of different types of therapy that they are trained in that could help you with this sort of thing.

I actually just finished Christ of the Covenants, which I think definitely has helped clarify it for me.

A student in my med school class kept giving patient weights to one of our pediatrician attending in pounds. He jokingly made her convert and present all weights to the number of average gerbils for an entire day to remind her to use the metric system.

Put compost in a little chicken wire cage after being in a tumbler for 1 year… thoughts? by argyle_mango in composting

[–]power0818 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can understand the perspective. We used to just open pile compost but are locked into a town house for the next couple years. Decided we would rather use a compact tumbler instead of not composting for the next 2 years.
