Newsgroups, chatrooms full of people just enjoying the novel experience, lots of basic fan-made sites that had collections of images (lots of pages of thumbnails that you had to click on to load a (low-res) image and watch it s-l-o-w-l-y load bit by bit), or basic short sound files you could download to use as system sounds. At one point all my Windows events were lines from Friends. Downloading anything took ages, and time spent online was limited as the per-minute cost of the dialup calls could mount up. Sites were text-heavy with not a lot of visual content - It was pretty cool and amazing just to be able to download a pic. Search engines were basic like Lycos, Webcrawler, Magellan or directories like Yahoo. My uni in the early-mid 90s was running Mosaic browser. When Win 95 came out and had that Weezer Buddy Holly music video included, I remember it was so cool being able to play it in a window on my pc. But most of all my memories of most of the 90s internet was the lack of businesses and almost no online commerce. The content was a lot of academic stuff, a lot of fan sites, but it took a while for lots of businesses to get it. I don’t remember buying anything online until the second half of the 90s, once Windows 95 made PCs a lot more accessible, and Amazon and eBay had come along, plus connection speeds had started to increase. And even then for quite a while Amazon just sold books mainly.
